Can any net savvy person tell me whether when people use the term trolling the forum, or to troll someone or something do they mean trawling and trawl?

I've lost my manuals on netiquette and the use of English on the net so have no way of finding out.

Why don't you just use Google to look it up like any moderately normal person would? :loopy:

:D

Wow :wow:, what a good idea. You mean rather than open up a debate about which word to use here on the forum?

Can I suggest Imodium for your problem? :loopy:

If you look it up in a dictionary, the verb "To Troll" is an Americanized version of the verb "To Trawl".
In web terms, it means "Trolling [trawling] for people to wind up".

Yes, trolling means deliberately posting stuff you know will upset people but doing so anyway.... The likes of t020 are very good "trolls" :D

Sorry.

Sorry.

Is that an ironic example of trolling or are you implying that some people would be better off attacking Helm's Deep? :D

Trawling is based on the fishing method; spreading a net wide and dragging in things.

Trolling is a form of fishing technique used in the US to catch fish such as Bass. You cast a hook, jiggle it about and then hopefully snag a fish....

Or a forum member who can be wound up....:)

I'm resurrecting this thread because the subject has cropped up in another thread, and is taking the latter off-topic.

Someone asked what was the definition of a troll, because certain people had been referred to as such. I found this forum troll definition (http://curezone.com/forums/troll.asp) which I think does apply to certain individuals who are members of SF, and I was just wondering what others think?

:)

It originated from usenet. The first recorded usage was:

Mark Miller Feb 8 1990, 1:41 pm...

".... You are so far beyond being able to understand anything anyone here
says that this is just converging on uselessness. The really sad part
is that you really believe that you're winning. You are a shocking
waste of natural resources - kindly re-integrate yourself into the
food-chain. Just go die in your sleep you mindless flatulent troll. "

In my day Trolls use to live under bridges and say things like "who's that trip, trap, tripping over my bridge?" and jump out at you (if you were a goat) and try to eat you!
You could sometimes get away with it if you had an older brother or big horns.

I'd never heard of being a troll upto this point to be honest and I think from what I've read in the troll definition's , its just another way to shut people up on the internet.

Why are we not allowed to say what we want on here, I know there are rules which we should all abide by, but the internet is a place of free speech.

I could quite well vent my spleen about the daily crapness that goes on in society, and things that really annoy the hell out of me on TV and also from watching people out and about, but then I would get drawn into arguments and labelled a troll, which I would not deam fair.

Why can we all not just live in harmony together on the internet and be allowed to speak about what we will??

Sure, people will always disagree with what we have said- but is that not the point- to debate about such things??

Thats the fun of the internet.

Spot on Angelus. It annoys me when people label me a "troll" on here when all I have ever done is offered honest thoughts and opinions. Obviously by posting them on to a public forum they're open to analysis and debate, but to be derided as a "troll" by people just because they disagree with me seems wrong. The label seems to be a good way for people to exercise an air of superiority over people they disagree with, rather than having the good grace to debate.

I dont think anyone should be labelled a troll on the internet.

Sure we all have different opinions, but then again we should not censor or stop anyone speaking their minds even if they are saying something we dont necessarily agree with.

t020

I have read some of your stuff on here, and I dont find you in anyway trollish at all, and I dont think people should attack you or label you in anyway- I wouldnt do it to anyone so I dont wish people to do it to others.

Basically put, If we end people's free speech, forums all over the internet will die out- is that what we really want after all?

There's a difference between lively debate and being downright offensive on purpose though, which is what some forum members do (occasionally) (not refering to t020 ;) )

Others forget to let go on some issues. (t020  ) When I agreed with his point on one particular topic, the 'lively debate' fell flat, so he came in from another angle to disagree over  Still, it kept the thread rolling....

And there's no need to point out that I'm not the nicest person on this forum, but I don't regard it as a popularity contest, and don't measure my self-worth on how many people like me - it's the quality of your friends that matter

I agree with you strix on the points you have made.

I dont think anyone is nasty on here to be honest, I really dont find you or anyone on here offensive at all.. I do like the odd argument now and again though on here, but thats what this forum is all about and its like the worlds biggest drug for me this forum- no matter what Im doing in my life, I love to come back on here and discuss everything... its my addiction.

We can get stuff off our chests, and I know if I come on here and talk about things that wind me up, its the best form of calming down I've ever come across, just me, a glass of JD & coke, typing away to strangers across the forum... i think it is like talking to 1,000's of different psychiatrists all at once - and its wonderful to know that I can come on here and vent my spleen at the world and people will discuss it calmly with me.

You won't see evidence of it if you aren't here *cough* as often as some of us *cough* (must address this problem)

The mods remove the worst material, so you only get to see it if you're reading it within a couple of mins of it being posted

Occasionally whole threads get pulled whilst reams of unreasonable behaviour is erased. This usually elicits a 'where did my thread go?' thread, which also gets removed :P

I think a couple of posts of mine have been deleted or so it seems, one I know was asking lesbians why they use vibrators if they love women so much?? I've never understood that??

Simple question I know and I was not intending it to be nasty but that got removed so I never got my answer in the end.

Angelus,

The Sheffield Forum is a place that healthy debate is encouraged, within the guidelines provided to all users. The Moderator team have no problem with debate that is constructive, informative to other users, and does not descend into personal insults.

I would agree that the internet is a place where people can speak freely; that doesn't mean that people can say exactly what they like on here though. There's an excellent link here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1404) that broadly explains the sites editiorial policy.

All, please remember that if anyone has comments to raise about the rules of the forum, make use of the 'Contact Us' link.
