View Full Version : Heeley Memories
Anyone remember Mrs Godbeher lived at the back of the laundry, we all though she was witch.....Hitone
I was friendly with a lad called Gary Bush who lived next door to the Godbehers in Forster Road, but over the wall in the big yard off the top of Boyton Street. There was another lad called Paul Carrington lived in the yard and whenever we were playing both the Godbehers would come out and create hell. What really wound them up was if any of us sat on the wall.... ah, happy days!!
Must be an age thing! I remember more about that period of my life than any other.
I can still picture all the shops there where I lived. My Mum & Dad now live at Chesterfield but are still in touch with Nellie & Sonny Lockwood from Tillotson.
Dad used to play on the Docker before me as a child & he's now 81. He can't remember houses or such like there either. I remember the edge of the Docker as being very crumbly slate so guess it was remains of quarry or somesuch.
@ Tosh13. Mum says there was more of your family living at the houses in the yard at the rear of Gower & Burgins and the barbers but she cant remember their names. Can you help? My Grandad George went out drinking with one of the family - was that your Grandad do you know?
Anyone remember a family up there keeping a couple of Turkey's - I kid you not. Back to back terraces with turkey's..... Before we moved into the bakers we lived on Foster Road at the rear of the hairdressers (My brother Keith was born there in 1954) the turkeys lived in a house to the rear of us.
Odd what you can remember when you try.
Hi Hitone1 There was only 1 Siddall family who lived on Forster Road & that was us at 21,I do not recall any other family members living near us apart from from Jean & Alec Hall who owned the chippy next door to the barbers up gleadless road. The Thackerys lived at the back of Gowers.

@ Tosh13 Ok my Mum says was it the Starkey's that lived there?
Also a BIG hi from my brother Keith, he's over here from the states at the moment. Says do you remember 'Nicking' pigeon eggs with him & also collecting rags and bottles which you sold at the scrap place at Heeley Green......
Further thoughts courtesy of my Dad recovering in hospital at the mo - this thread gave us a few things to chat about.
Boynton Street was still cobbled in the 50's. Recall collecting tar on a hot summers day....
The scrap dealer on Wilson Place was called Pearsons Yard & he had the old horse & cart ala Steptoe.
The other shop on the opposite corner from Amy Mortons was called Middletons.
Strange that lots of mentions of the shops, but no one recalled the bakers where I grew up.
Gower & Burgins with a huge bacon slicer.
I remember all the shops well with found memories especially Amy Mortons (remember the fireworks & bangers she sold & kept in sweet jars every year)
Staley's - where I spent all my pocket money on Superman & Batman comics (Wish I had saved them)
:hihi:

:hihi:
We were only talking about this today, we used to wrap it round and round on a stick until it was a big ball at the end, then use them like maces against each other. :D
Mind you we never had many toys in those days :hihi:
Boynton Street, Mrs Scales and Kenneth in the chip ole, a threpny and a fourpny please, with scraps.
And a bottle of Jusoda, and (if you were lucky), a Mars Bar from Mrs Newcombes,(Tommy the milkmans mother).
She used to have draught beer on and lots of the older ladies used to take jugs and bottles to be filled there, to relax after their daily work, no mod cons in the fifties!
Ben Woods on Artisan View, sold vinegar from barrels, single razor blades, single fags with one match. If any one bought a full five 'parkdrive' it made his day! I think he used to live with his mother, who you rarely saw.
Happy days they were, :D but I dont think our parents would have the same memories with all the scrimping and saving they had to do!!

I wonder if there is anyone out there who was in the scouts around 1959 to 1960, if I have my dates correct..........

Hi Tosh, been a while since i have looked on the site and was pleased to see the thread still going, goes to show that a lot of memories get created even in a small area like heeley. Thanks for mentioning mum and dad in a couple of your posts. So you are 50 now, congratulations, I am 46 on Saturday and it coincides witha rock n roll night at a local club in Donny so we are going there for a couple of drinks, might not see a lot of Sunday!!
Saw that you had a message from CTR960 about Andy Beck, do you know who CTR960 is? I remember a Chtirstopher Reeney and found out later tyhat he went to Wales as a minister, could be him i suppose although CTR960 sounds like abbreviation for a consultation report by the Gov'.
It is interesting how this thread has developed, all the old favourites are there like taggys etc,.
I recall dad saying he was related to Pearsons the rag and bone man and he used to take us on his horse, dad always said he was richer than he looked.
Can you remember what the grocers shop was called opposite the Tudor Bingo hall? thier son, Billy i think ( could have been a nick name billy the butcher) had the corner shop oposite the waggon and horses as a butchers then there was the small sweet shop and then the grocers which i thought that was Gowers? Can see most of the images in my head but not the names of roads.
Hope you are ok and have recovered from your 50th. regards Graham
Hello CTR,
No I went to Ashleigh, due to the number of fights between us and them but I have been in touch with Andy since and he lives at Conisborough and i live about two miles away from him in Doncaster. I got in touch with him through his sister Gillian and have found out Andy does not have computer access so it's good old fashioned wireless letters if you want to get in touch with him.
He seems well we were going to meet up but I was ill and could not and we have not arranged anything since then.
By the way what does CRT960 stand for??
If you know andy did you go to annes road school? I was a quiet little bnoy then and preferred the background. Although I can remember qite a few kids when i put my mind to it.
regards

The grocers shop was Woodford's and they did indeed have a son named Billy.
Can't remember the name of the sweetie shop even though I did frequent it often. The butcher on the corner was another Billy... this time Billy Lee.
Does anyone remember an old man that lived in the big yard opposite the vicarage, he was called "Dobby" and we were all scared of him as kids. He was a rag and bone man too I think, he certainly collected junk.

yes i remember the sweet shop now as being phonetically connors, I lived at the shops next lot down from those. Originally dad had the greengrocers which he later turned into a chippie. We were on the edge of a wide drive that led to some garages at the back of us and shred this with David Dilks who was a barbers, then there was Bamfords? sweet shop and then the post office Shemmel i think they were called, down from us the other two shops were closed and the last was a ladies haidressers and the Becks lived behind that shop.
There was some open land where cottages once stood and Garages made of asbestos and corrugated steel that i can remember climbing up on to and running and jumping from roof to roof. Next to this and opposite the vicarage was a large house, very mysterious to me back then that had a huge garden. What you would give to have a house like that nowadays??
Then more open land where houses once stood and this is the open area which tosh's house would have backed onto.
I can remeber pinching wood from thier bonfire to make ours bigger than thiers and sure they did the same to us. We used to have what seemed to be massive bonfires of anything we could find to burn and spend weeks building them in time for November 5th.
Can anyone else remember the bonfires?
Hi Adviser was your Dad's place a fruit & veg shop just before the foundry on the left going down Gleadless road,as I worked on saturday mornings ,going out in a big van around the area shouting Tates for sale & ringing a bell.It was such a long time ago I cannot recall the name of the shop.Weused to have Bonfires at the back of our house on the field.
Hi Tosh, No it was just a general store before dad made it into the chippie. I remember that little foundry on the left hand side below the bottom of the church. When i think about it there were quite a few shops around us i remember the newsagents on your street and almost opposite you there was a small shop, i bought mojos there 8 for a penny must have been when we came down to see you. I keep trying to picture your mum because i remember meeting her and one time when she had a new settee mum went down to see it and your mum was very proud of it.
I think that if you went to the end of your street and turned left there was another chippie up there and i am sure dad used to call him Jimmy fishcake.
it seems a world away now when you look back, i can remember thinking about old people all they talk about is what they did years ago, and here i am doing it myself. The thing is the more you write on here and the more people respond the more you begin to remember, may be not in any chronological order but memeories are everywhere. The cinema at heeley bottom on a saturday moring giving badges that glowed in the dark, probably not allowed now beacuse of radioactivity in the luminous materials used, once seeing a fish in the river Sheaf at heeley bridge, seeing the river flood at heeley bottom, tasting the stream water in catcliffe woods because it looked clean? conkering in millhouses park, scavenging for srap when they began pulling down the houses or slums as they were called then, wooden toilet boxes were the best as they were lined with copper and i got 10 shillings each for them, every time i sold one i got an ice cream from mum, taggy's of course.
I was trying to remember the the veg shop but can't for the moment but can remember trades vans selling stuff from the back,
When Andrew gets back from abroad I will talk to him he may remember.

Do you remember Ann & Kathline Adams ? they lived at the back of the shops too. They were great friends of my sister Rita Johnson who lived across the road, in the cottages behind the gents toilets. I don't recall David the barber but I did get my lovely long hair cut off when it was "Jimmy's" That was when the DA was all the rage.. even for girls.
blackadder 05-08-2006, 20:20 Hello all! I'm new to the forum but this thread caught my eye, so I registered.
Does anyone remember the Cartwright family? They used to live on View Road and went to Anns Rd school. My Mum is Audrey (born 1941) . She has three sisters - Joan, Irene & Doreen, and four brothers - Alan,George, Eric & Roy.
My Grandad and Nannan (George & Irene) used to tell me a lot of stories from their days in Heeley. Grandad used to work at Laycocks.
It would be nice to tell my mum someone remembers them.

Hope you have agood time now youre in
hello Banksia, I know of Ann and Kathleen as they lived next door to us. Their house was behind the Barbers. They were teenagers when i was still at the juniors in the early 60's.
I remember the cottages behind the toilets being pulled down and finally the toilets themselves. Along with my younger brother i remember we kept unearthing the mains water pipe, only a slim copper one and piercing it so whater sptayed into the road. Eventually somebody dug down and capped it off. It seemed funny at the time but being a nuisence was what kids did then.
Because dad had the chippie and even though it was closed we were one of the last to leave the area as businesses were the last to go (slum clearence it was called back then) so most of it was pulled down around us, it was a great adventure playground and we never gave a thought to any danger.
Eventually we moved on to the Wybourne, manors Oaks close, as that was where most of mums family came from although by then the Wybourn had already been modernised and a lot of relatives stayed on the manor where they had been relocated, they thought it wasn't as rough as the wybourn estate!!
Hi advisor !
It seems strange to have you tell me about what happened to the houses after we left Heeley. I didn't go back to visit in those days but but always go for a walk down memory lane when we come over for a visit now. My whole family has fond memories of living there as we were in Heeley for so long. My mother, now 93 was raised living in the cottages and myself and all my siblings were born there. We were all christened at Heeley Church and all went to Ann's Road School. My eldest son also started school at Anns Road and was christened at Heeley Church. He was born in '66 so you wouldn't know him.
I wonder what happened to the Adam's family.. any idea ?

I was in Annes Road with Andy Beck. I think he was in the middle of the family with older and younger siblings. I don't think he went to Newfield, because they'd moved elsewhere when the houses were cleared. Still, I could be wrong --- memory plays funny tricks!!
tosh she moved from boyton street to foster road when our pat lived there and that was the 70's..

Miss Skin 04-10-2006, 20:15 Sandford Grove Road was great sledging, sharp bend half way down, then a final turn onto Marden or Gatefield road, and trying to put he brakes on before Abbeydale Road. I ski in Vermont but it's no more exciting thsn that was.
Boy, do i remember doing that!, we used to have a great laugh sliding down sandford grove on big cement bags that my dad bought home, i was at the machon bank end though leading onto sheldon road, chelsea and meersbrook park were good fun too in winter :)

Hi, Yes of course I do, but we've had this conversation before (Page 13):hihi:
I remember the area really well, but I'm buggered if I can recall the kids names at Annes Road, other than your family, the Starkeys & the Lockwoods.
Had a crush on a couple of girls in my formative years think one was Lyn Spotswood?
Hoping someone can jog my ailing memories.... I was born in 1951 so went there from 55 - 62 'ish
Sorry Hitone1 my mind is going LOL
I can't resist joining in this thread. Its fascinating to read about familiar names, streets and places but no mention of my particular bit of Heeley. I lived on Hyde Road (between Well Rd and Boynton Street) from 1963 and our yard was overlooked by the Shakeys beer garden. We move out in 1975 just before the houses were demolished. I went to Newfield and can remember all the teachers names mentioned. At Annes Road I remember Mr Chinn (yes his real name not the Wilson variation at Newfield) Mr Hanson (headmaster) and Mrs Tyler (music and french I think). I went to the docker only a couple of times with mates from Kent Road but otherwise our playground was the field known to us as the mission next to Oak street.
andythepiema 12-11-2006, 11:14 My earliest memorys were of living on Well road as i was born there. We used to live in the old houses next door to my dads mum and dad Ethel and Walter until the houses were pulled down and one of my earliest memorys is of my mum talking to my gran over the wall. I still remember my mum coming home with me and being fascinated by a stream of water running down the yard. Someone had stolen the pipes in our outdoor loo and left the seat hanging on the cistern. We moved out shortly afterwards and went to live on the Arbourthorne. Up till recently a picture of my grandad in the fishing team still hung in the Shakespeare inn. Its odd the things you remember. I can still recall Taggys ice cream and Mr Phillips butchers. If anyone remembers my grandfather Walt Hawley or grandmother Ethel please feel free to get in touch

Did Carl Bradford live in your yard? I've got a vague recollection he lived somewhere around there.
Do you know any of the Siddall family.
I remember Michael Siddall, if my mind serves me well, he once spelt his name wrong in Mr Gouldings class and got the cane, I think for doing it, then he had his book thrown across the classroom. Tell me if it wasn't you!!!!
chuffinel 12-11-2006, 22:09 A lot of the guys in my class had a crush on Sylvia Hallam, among others, who lived on Hyde Rd in the late 40's early 50's.
She lived on the side closest to Well Rd and attended Anns Rd. school.
Olive Powell was another "fox" whose mother was an hairdresser on Well Rd (I think)
Boy, am I ever going back now.
crookesey 14-11-2006, 14:54 This one might be too far in the past. My two great grandfathers came to live in Heeley, sometime between 1880 1890. One came from Bath and was named Ring, the other came from Horncastle and was named Marshall. Great grandad Ring married an Irish girl named Brearden and great grandad Marshall married a girl fron Grenoside named Bower.
They produced a bus load of children between them and lived in Heeley well into the 1930's. My grandad Marshall played football for Heeley Friends and his best mate was Albert Hunter of Sheffield United, Arsenal, Brighton and England fame. Great grandad Marshall was a baker who came to Sheffield with a guy called Fletcher who started a bakery, yes it was the Fletcher that you have heard of.
Great grandad Ring was very well known as a platform guard at Heeley Station and as the doorman at the roller skating rink.
You never know I might have some relatives that I don't know about who still live in Heeley.

Do you mean Malcolm if so he is my brother.
bigthanks 15-11-2006, 22:09 Yikes Tosh ! It's a small world. I lived at 19 Forster Rd until about 1953/54. My best friend, Barry Waterhouse lived at number 21. He was killed shortly after that, on Shoreham Street when his bicycle tires got caught in the tram tracks and he was thrown off in front of a car. When I lived there the Parkinsons lived at number 17, we were at 19, the Waterhouses at 21 and my grandad lived at 23 until he died round about 1950 and the Cantrells moved in. Another friend of mine called Pete Mitchell lived across the street next door to Dysons corner shop (other corner from Amy Morton's)
My Dad lived at the back of 156 Gleadless Road, Barry waterhouse was a good friend of his! He's not in to all this computer lark so he has asked me to post on his behalf. Chuffinel he remembers you too. My pa also attended Anns Road early 50's (me too late 80's early 90's). He will raise a glass in the shaky best wishes to all :)

We keep saying it's a small world and this proves it again.
I can't remember the numbers on Gleadless Rd at all.
What was at the front ? Gowers ?
Anyway it's good to hear from you.
We ex-Heeleyites keep turning up like the proverbial dog poo.
P.S. Is the Shaky still standing ?
andythepiema 16-11-2006, 00:35 Indeed it is.
I got drunk in there for the first time aged 15
It hasnt changed much either in the 18 years since
kenfozzy 19-11-2006, 15:59 Hi Banksia, Was at Carfield from 1949 (5yr old) to leaving in 1959. We had a spell of being at Annes Rd. as an annexe for a couple of years. At 12 or 13 fell in love with a girl from Annes Rd School, Name of Cynthia Flint. She had a plait of hair all the way down her back. Will never forget her. Remember too much of my youth to keep going, I will stop now before it's too late. Ken.
Applegrim 24-03-2007, 19:07 I know most people on here remembers Gleadless Road, but do you remember the Turton Family, they lived in the little cottages opposite Heeley church, Mary Turton was probably the most famous "Buffer girl" Sheffield ever had, she was a wonderful lady and she raised a big family in that little cottage, and she was so proud of her children, I have met a few of the children since and all of them are a credit to her,now if anyone on here remembers who I'm talking about, next time you see "Deal or no Deal" I'm sure you'll see Christine see if you remember her.

I remember the Turtons. Used to knock about now and then with Freddy although he wasn't a close friend.
I remember we had a pet rabbit that my Dad finally killed but none of us fancied eating a pet so I believe he gave it to the Turtons.
Wasn't Mrs Turton a widow ?
Applegrim 24-03-2007, 21:29 Hi there Chuffinel, hope you are OK over there, back to your question, I was going to end my last post by saying that I cannot remember ever seeing Mr Turton, and I'd been to there house enough times, I remember Freddie I think he was the oldest? there was Brenda, Christine then a younger one that took care of my mum when she was in a home who married Tony Hardwick, then another son much younger who's name I cannot think of, their house was so tiny, ours was a two up two down which was also very small (Zinc bath behind toilet door) across the yard, but yet there's seemed so much smaller, but Mary's heart was big enough to fill that house.
Did you know that in Sheffield now we have what is called the Winter Gardens which is similar in style to the building in Toronto that houses the Hockey Hall of Fame, and in the Winter Gardens there is many things that is associated with Sheffield including "A Buffer Girls Story" and the buffer girl in question was Mrs Turton and there is a recording of her voice explaining what it was like to be a buffer girl, and I'm sure when Sheffield hosted The world student games, Mrs Turton was on hand giving advice as the opening of the games
was started with the clanging of the forge as the blanks were stamped out.
Anyhow I'm almost sure it's Christine on Deal or no Deal, I hope she does the
£250,000.
Take care Chuffinel give my love to Brandygirl.
Applegrim 24-03-2007, 21:39 Kenfozzy,I remember Cynthia Flint, we all knocked about togather at Carfield, and she worked at the Co-op at Heeley Green,I think she lived on Spencer Road when we were at school.
Two Christmas's ago I organized a reunion for Banksia as she was coming back to Sheffield, now Cynthia didn't come, but there's another reunion coming up one June 14th (if you want to come let me know) or anyone else that would like to come, and this time she might come you never know!
bryan1943 24-03-2007, 23:16 I didn't live in Heeley,I lived in Abbeydale but used to go down Broadfield Road to Heeley Baths where I seemed to spend half my days. Then to the Heeley Coli or palace if I had a tanner in my pocket. There was a billiard hall at the end of the road, where we'd gamble for the price of the table, and later when I was in the Navy go to the working men's club in uniform cos folks would always buy a poor sailor a pint!

Hi just couldn't help joing in this thread,we used to live on cross carrfield street with my gram & grandad,i was born in 1948 and attended anns road school, from there i went to carrfield school and finally ended my education at Newfield green when the two parts of the school were split one being the boys with the girls being seperate.my early recolection of heeley green was spending my time playing with friends on what was known at that time as the Docker, this was a largish shale hill covered in grass that is no longer there as houses were built on the same spot quite a few years ago.Does any one remember Patrick Mcgoohan {Danger man} the actor who used to sit on the steps as what is known to locals as the round house pub {Queen Head},i was told this by my late mother. As a youngster i used to fetch my gram a jug of beer from a shop called Toms, which is now council houses/flats on richards rd.The neighbours in our yard were called,Bakers, farringtons,Mcartny's,styles, hibbert s just over the wall.Heeley Green was at that time a fantastic place to live with everyone looking after each other which today is sadly short of,to all Heelyites long live Heeley!!

Hi Tinker,Just to thank you for your information,it's a long time since i lived in heeley but i still have very fond memories of it,and sometimes reminisce about visiting my aunts house/cottage across from Heeley Church, and also going down the side of the waggon and horses on Kent road to get my mom a jug of stew and dumplings that a lady sold from her house in the yard at the back,i've never had any as nice since.Still times change as well as places, but the memories still live on,Nice happy times one never forgets.

Hi dino do you know a family called the Siddall's who lived on Forster Road.
Hi Tosh,The name is very familiar and from what i can remember i believe i had a friend at school with the same surname,i have asked my sister who now lives in West Bromwich and she also remembers the name.A lot of people i knew from Heeley i can still remember them when i see them but as for names i must admit i'm pretty hopeless,i used to play with a lad they called Malcom Farrington who had a sister called Pat as well as my cousin Roy Williams if you knew them?.I can remember a family called the constantines, they had two girls called,Carol and Linda i believe, they used to live at the bottom of Kent road just down the back from the Waggon & Horses pub.
Hi,Does any one remember a lad called Clive barber, his sisters name was Carol who used to live down valley road on a side road called Bradbury street, which i don't think exists any more, the last time i heard from him was a long time ago and i heard he had moved to the batemoor estate,he was a Great friend and we used to hang around together at heeley green.

Hi there,
While reading the messages I have come accross many memories. I was born on Fitzroy Road both me and my brother Alan went to Heeley Bank School I left there in 1954 and went to Hurlfield Girls. Does anyone remember the "Teen Bar " on Heeley Bottom and the Sunday night horror films at the Heeley Palace ? also the train from Heeley station on Sunday mornings and the hike out to Castleton. Wonderful days
I remember my mother Annie Thornhill mentioning Mary Depledge, my dad Alan Thornhill was a member of Heely Working Mens Club and also did a club turn as a singer under the name Alan Hill. Anyone remember him ?
Teen Bar, an inovation and first coffee bar in Sheffield. Every Sunday morning the train to Castleton was full of teenagers. Walk from Hope by the river to Castleton. The train ride back was quite an adventure (1955 on) !!!!:help:

You might have known my elder Brothers John & Malcolm.
is this the same Tony Siddall that had a girlfriend in heeley around 1973/74 ?
Hi DUFFEMS,
I believe you said that you lived on upper valley road, and went to carfield school. I lived on rushdale and went to carfield from 1949 to1964.
Where abouts on upper did you live , anywhere near duckers, or memmots.
Might know you.Anyone else on here from MEERSBROOK.
DAVIDED
Hi,
Sorry we've only just noticed this post from way back. we've had internet problems and have just started with a new e-mail provider.
I lived at 130,Upper Valley Road opposite the Duckers (Alan & Barry), Barry was much older than me and Alan was a mate of my brother who was born in 1947, I was born in 1948.
My husband lived at 47,Upper Valley Road, his grandparents' house until he moved onto Albert Road in about 1959/60.
We both went to Carfield Junior & Secondary Schools and then I went Brincliffe Grammar and my husband went on to Newfield Secondary.
Neil Memmott was at Carfield with us.
Do you recall any other names from school as many of the names I've seen on this site don't ring any bells probably because we were more Meersbrook than Heeley.
I've been doing my family history (not got very far) but, they were all from Heeley, once it's in the blood it's there forever!
Is anyone on this site related to the Goodison family from Heeley, my grandmother was born on Carfield Road and after marrying she lived on Florence Place. I'd also be interested to hear from any of her Wildgoose descendants.
Regards,
Duffems
hi dufems.
i was born at 120 rushdale road in 1944. you,ll know the story,s then. i remember malc very well, sadley he,s no longer with us. he had plenty of problems in his life. you,ll also remember robinsons the grocers and hartleys the fruit shop. harry roberts butchers as well. remember the bomb site above the butchers, i lived right opposite. we always had our bonfire on there and it was harry,s job to light it. cant remember a lot of names from school days . vic eggington, graham smith. val collis richard smith, carol harvey. christine hunter. christine was my first love.but id left school then.i used to stand at the end of our passage and watch for her coming home from school. oh happy days.i got in touch with neil on friends reunited, he was my best friend at school.nicknamed him breever, don,t know why.hope i,ve brought back a few memories for you.by for now

Hi davided,
Yes, I do remember the Storey family, Sylvia is no longer with us and, as you mentioned Malcolm too but, they had a younger brother Michael who was only young when he died, such a nice family to have had so much grief.
Do you remember the Maynard family, Marion was probably about your age, she had an older sister Margaret who became a teacher, they were our neighbours. If you recall them you will remember that Marion (Maz) was rather a large person and when she got her first roller skates she had the metal wheeled ones and, as we lived next to "the passage", when she came down it sounded like an express train!
My first roller skates were bought from the cobblers on Valley Road 4/11p with rubber tyres and silent ball bearings!
The only trouble was that they extended from a size 4 shoe to a size 8 and, as I only wore a size 3 shoe the damn things used to slip off half way down Upper Valley Road, just when you'd built up enough speed they used to drop in half!
Do you remember the Memmotts on Upper Valley, Derek Memmott once went flying into the railings at the bottom of Upper Valley and Kent Road and knocked his front teeth out.
We do remember Robbo's shop and Shaws greengrocers, their lad was in our class but, I can't remember his name. I remember Stuart Shaw who lived on Argyle Road, he used to bully me but, one day he thumped me really hard and a lad in our class sorted him out and that very same lad became my husband, been together now for 37 years.
The strict ruling at Carfield with Pop Edlington as head was commonplace in schools then but, I was petrified of walking past him. Mr.Roache was positively evil, he never taught me but, when he was on yard duty he used to have a go at me just because he didn't like my older brother!
I'll not hog the forum with further recollections but, if you think of any more please reply, and any other ex Carfield pupils, where are you?
Duffems.
Applegrim 16-06-2007, 21:02 Hi Davided, well typical of me I missed the reunion that I'd helped organise so as soon as someone tells me how it went I'll let you know, that is presuming they are by now sober, I'd organised it on my birthday but I was sunning myself in Tenerife at the time, I'm sure everyone will have enjoyed themselves, but why didn't you go? You would have enjoyed it, Banksia's husband Terry is a really great bloke for an Aussie, but there would have been other Heeleyites there, let me know if you hear anytrhing before I do.
hi applegrim.
i couldnt find out where the reunion was being held. i did send a post to you asking where it was and offered my services to sing, for free of course.it would have been nice to remenisce about the old days and possibly meet old friends, maybe next time.just had a chat with duffems, dont know if she went, ill find out next time.
by for now

hi again duffems.
yes i think i can remember maz did she wear glasses. if so shes the one who got me my first date with christine hunter they were in the same class. did you go to the reunion that applegrim organised only she missed it. she went on holiday and is trying to find out how it went. i used to like mr edlingtons shoes they shone enough to see you face in.
Hi davided,
Maz did wear glasses, she was a nice lass. Val Collis was my husband's cousin, she married Mick Birtles apparently, though I don't know either of them.
We weren't aware of the reunion as we've not looked on the forum for some time so I cannot tell you how it went.
Did you have a younger brother and, if so what was his name please as my husband thinks he was in our class.
True what you say about Mr.Edlington's shoes, they were ox-blood brown and bulled up like a sargeant major's, he used to carry his cane like a sargeant major too! He used to watch us all pile in each morning like an animal watching his prey.
Do you remember Mr.Cartwright the maths teacher, he was our form teacher as was Mr. Vickers (Dobbin) the geography teacher. Do you remember when Dobbin lost his pen knife in Meersbrook Park, he accused everyone of nicking it and wanted to punish us all, he was crackers! Every day it was the same thing, "has anyone seen my pen knife, you can come to see me to tell me who's taken it and you won't be punished" ( not much)!
Oh, the memories keep coming back.
Regards,
Duffems
hi duff,s.
im getting familiar now. yes i do have a younger brother called steven and he did go to newfield but i doubt him being in your class.i think i know who you are if im right. did your father have anything to do with music,ie concert sec to one of the clubs.if so i have sang in your front room. tell you more if im right.

Hi, we used to live next door to tom and mabel, i was only little though so i dont really remember them but my mum has told a few stories about them
Hi davided,
Think you have the wrong person. Loretta Collis' father (I think) used to be the concert secretary at Woodseats W.M.C., I believe she would be your age.
They lived on Valley Road close to the Co-Op on the corner, I think they lived in the house next door to the Co-Op.
My husband's father was a driving instructor, he sadly died in 1976 aged 52.
Sorry that you didn't sing in our front room!
Regards,
Duffems.
hi duffems.
did you wear glasses when you were young and are you small,
unless my memorie is playing me tricks and thats likely i remember singing in someones front room to a record player i think the song was pocket full of rainbows by elvis. i remember it was somewhere near maz,s. i appologise if i am wrong. the only collis i knew was val. still i am getting old now. if it wasnt for the dog knowing his way home when i take him for a walk i,d probably get lost.

Hi Banksia here !
Yea, for an Aussie, my husband is a great bloke. The reunion was a huge success, we all chatted like mad the whole evening and were sorry that it had to come to a close. I'm not sure who Davided is but you missed a good night mate. However, I'm sure there will be other get togethers in the future, with or without me.
I hope you had a great holiday Applegrim ?
albertross 19-06-2007, 20:49 Just to end any confusion. I am Banksia but I'm using my cousins computer whilst staying at his place in Sheffield, hence his user name.

So do I know you I wonder ? I lived at the side of the Heeley Green pics and was also born in '44. There were only a couple of blokes at the reunion, Neville Brinnin and Keith Dobson but you would have enjoyed it I'm sure ? The get together was at the Waggon & Horses at Millhouses.
I can't stand cricket so don't have to get into any trouble about taking sides.
Hubby naturally barracks for the Aussies.
May be see ya next time ?

My god, you do take me back. I remember Susan Bradley. Her parents plus her Aunt, Uncle and a couple of kids all lived next door to me. I was only about 10 or 11 at the time I think.
We called into Heeley last week to have a look around. It seems so different now, especially with the Heeley Green pictures gone. The new apartment block built on the site is not very pleasing to the eye though I was pleased to see that work has started on renovating the Waggon. I may not be in here for a while as we pull up stakes soon and move on. I will try to log in at my next port of call. Byeeeeeee Banksia
hi duffems.
did you wear glasses when you were young and are you small,
unless my memorie is playing me tricks and thats likely i remember singing in someones front room to a record player i think the song was pocket full of rainbows by elvis. i remember it was somewhere near maz,s. i appologise if i am wrong. the only collis i knew was val. still i am getting old now. if it wasnt for the dog knowing his way home when i take him for a walk i,d probably get lost.
davided
Hi davided,
Not me I'm afraid, I was/am only small but have never worn glasses so I don't know whose front room you've been in, you get around don't you! I was always a big Elvis fan but, we didn't have a record player until we got our first Dansette in about 1960. Maz and her sister had a record player so it might have been their front room. I can't believe that I'm trying to find whose front room you sang in!
I believe Val Collis was my father-in-laws cousin, my husband is Roger, his great uncle was a concert secretary for one of the clubs at Woodseats.
We were both born in 1948 and went to Carfield right until it closed in 1962 when Roger went to Newfield and I went to Brincliffe Grammar.
You may know David Travis and the Duckers who lived on Upper Valley Road opposite the Storeys. My brother Keith saw David some months ago. I believe he's a painter & decorator.
Regards,
Duffems.
hi duffems.
its a case of mistaken identity im afraid, it happens a lot at my time of life, the old memory. the reason im curious is that the father of whos house it was heard me singing and advised me to take it up. i did and made a good living out of it so it was good advise.ive been singing since i was 20yrs old am 63 now ,still singing.yes i knew david played football with him and yes he is a p&d also knew alan and barry ducker. do you remember the little shop halfway down , i think val and david lived near it.do you remember barry glynn.he and i used to duet together before he sadly passed on.are you still living in meersbrook or have you moved on.contacted neil memmot a few weeks ago,hes up dore now.

Hi davided,
Nice to hear from you. I'm as curious as you are to find the person who you sang to, how old was you at the time, you can probably remember that though you may not recall what you had for your breakfast, it's an age thing!
We lived next door to Maz Maynard and the other side of our "passage"was David Travis. The other side of Maz (the next yard up) was Brian Lingard, his dad was called Jack, lovely chap, it might have been him?
Alan Ducker,Dave Travis and Malcolm Storey were mates of my brother Keith but, I didn't hang around with them as they were "the bigger boys!".
I do remember the little shop, it was on the opposite side of the road to us, a weird place (I thought so), it only seemed to sell Oxo cubes and vinegar, what was that all about, eh! My husband Roger lived near to that shop and even he doesn't know what else they sold.
I don't remember Barry Glynn, Roger may do, I'll ask him when he comes home tonight.
I think it was Neil Memmott who was in our class at Carfield, I always got his name and that of his brother mixed up, his brother was quite a bit older and, I believe he was in the forces, perhaps Guards, don't know where I recall that from, might be way off with that. Whichever Memmott it was who was in our class he once came down Upper Valley on a sledge (I think, it wouldn't have been a skateboard, they hadn't been invented) and he collided with the railings which were on the corner of Upper Valley and Kent Road (Kent hill we called it). He either knocked his front teeth out or badly damaged them, I know he was in a mess, he was a smashing lad. The last time I saw him was in 1970 when I was coming home from my hen night quite drunk and he was on the same bus, I think he extremely embarrassed that I knew him as I recall telling all the bus that he was "a lovely lad" in a 6x "Cherry B" 4x "Babycham" and 3x "Gold Label" type manner! He was glad (so was I) when I got off the bus on Ann's Road and a loud cheer went up. I've never been drunk since and I don't drink any alcohol at all now, it put me off for good!
I moved from Meersbrook in 1959 when my mum bought a house in Heeley, Alexandra Road where my grandparents lived, where I lived until marrying Roger in 1970. Since then we've moved around the country quite a bit and finally bought an apartment in S11 two years ago, no garden, no pets, no kids (all grown and gone). Roger's still working (too much) but, he'll eventually retire but, not for a few years yet.
I'm even more intrigued now to find the person of the front room where you sang your little heart out, any more clues?
Regards,
Marlene

norton girl 05-07-2007, 20:01 hi duffems, found this forum by chance i was at carfield school from 1956-1960
my maiden name was oldfield, i remember all the teachers you have mentioned,mr cartwright used to call me shirley i still have the poem he wrote me when we left school do you remember mr simpkins{english} sandra gregory was my best friend. linda butcher and denise? david smith was in the photography class with mr philips. remember drinks shop abbeydale road we used to meet there with the wilson twins dave and john also pete mansell lynne jackson and a girl called sandra. my father worked at the wagon and horses pub at heeley he was head barman. we used to go to the heeley cineama. did you know david edwards he was about 2 years older than me ?
Hi "norton girl", thanks for your message. I can recall the teachers' names and memories of the drinks shop on Abbeydale Road, we used to call there when we came out of the Abbeydale Cinema.
Unfortunately I don't recall the names which you've mentioned, maybe you are a year or so older than myself.
I've been in touch with David Edwards but, he's about 4 years older than me so perhaps you're in between in which case you may remember my brother Keith, he was born in 1947 so he's now 60, he was in the same class as Sylvia Storey (brother of Malcolm). We all lived on Upper Valley Road then my family moved to Alexandra Road,Heeley about 1959 but, we still continued attending Carfield School. My husband and I were in Mr.Cartwright's (Hoss) class, he was a good maths teacher and then we were in Mr.Davison's class and sent off to Ann's Road School Annexe where there were just 2 classes, we were in 2A and there was 2B (Mrs.Wolstenholme). We liked it down there because we could get away with more as we weren't under the watchful eye of Pop Edlington, god that bloke scared me to death! Mind you, I was terrified of Mr.Roache who hated me just because my brother was in his class and they often "had words". My brother couldn't stand him so Roachie always picked on him and, in consequence, I copped it too. He never taught me and I was sooooo glad! I think he taught maths or am I wrong on that one?
Let me know some more details so I can get some idea of who you are.
Regards,
Duffems
hi duffems.

hi norton girl, davided here,
welcome to the forum june shirley,i think.
the forum has some interesting topics. how long have you been up norton and did you live at heely. i lived on rushdale road at meersbrook, live on marsh lane now.lets know a bit more about you please
by for now dave.
Pardon me correcting you but it was Staley's newpapers. I had an account with them for years when I lived on Gleadless Road.
I certainly remember Amy Mortons shop. We would take in the soap power coupons and trade them for lemon fizz or some such like. A girl I went to school with called Susan Marshall lived in what used to be a shop opposite the school. It was on the corner of Gleadless and another street, the name of which I cannot recall, the large windows were all blacked out with paint, ring any bells ?
The shop with the blacked out windows was on the corner of Gleadless Road and Wilson Place. It was originally a Pawnbrokers. Yes Susan Marshall did live there with her Ruth her Mum, Walter her Dad and her two Sisters Monica and Vicky. I was engaged to Sue, we were to be married at Christmas 1963, but she tragically died in October 1963. I am still in touch with Monica and Vicky.
norton girl 17-07-2007, 09:23 Hi Duffems sorry for delay in reply computor problems, david edwards was older than me I was about 3 years younger than him, we used to meet out of school. I was in Mr Cartwrights class he always called me shirley. Mr Davidson was my teacher at Annes Road,I played angel Gabrial in the school concert I had a broken Arm did not get my pot off till the day of the concert. I used to play the piano with one hand. Pop Edlington used to have secretary cannot recall her name, I used to sit in his office answering the telephone when she was not in and when he was teaching. I was aPrefect in my last year that was when I went out with David Smith He was in the Photography class with Mr Philips who took very large photo of us and put it on the notice board, I still have the photo. Sandra Gregory and I were the best of friends we were always competingagainst each other in Netball, Rounders and Cookery. she had a brother Richard or Robert they lived at the top of Richards Road. I came from Mundella Place at Graves Park but spent most of my time around Heeley Green. My Maiden Name was Oldfield. There was a girl in our class Called denise she was very lovely with long dark curly hair cannot remember her second name. Do you remeber the art mistress she had short black hair and very fat ankles.
norton girl 17-07-2007, 09:33 Hi davided My maiden name was oldfield I was born on mundella place at Graves Park. Iwas at Carfield and Annes School, do you remeber the Youth Club at Annes Road I think it was on Tuesdays and Thursday nights we had a disco we used to walk back through the Cemetary. to the bus stop at Heeley Green.sometimes we called at the drink shop.My middle name was Shirley Mr Cartwight always called me this.I was a Prefect we used to stand at the gate at the entrance of the school in the mornings and lunchtimes to clock in any late comers, I also used to help serve dinners in the canteen with Sandra Gregory. Iwill have to find my Autograph Album for any more names.
Hi norton girl, thanks for your reply, glad you've got your computer sorted, they're wonderful when they're working but terrible to fix when they're not!
We must have followed each other into various classes though I don't recall your name. Roger and I were both pupils of Mr.Cartwright and Mr.Davison but, I don't remember you in our class.
We left when the school closed down in 1962, Roger went on to Newfield and I went to Brincliffe Grammar, did you leave before then, if you did that would put you a year older than us which would possibly put you in the same age group as my brother, he was born in 1947.
Let me know the names which you can remember and I'll try too recall some.
Regards,
duffems.
Hi davided My maiden name was oldfield I was born on mundella place at Graves Park. do .
My husbands two Aunt's and grandmother lived on Mundella Place for many years. One Aunt had to move to the OAP flats on Derbyshire Lane when they demolished the houses on Mundella.

You will remember Miss Hargreaves and Mr Eyre and Mr Hooper he also ran the play centre (happy Days)
I then move to Newfield School left in 1962, and revisited this year for the first time.
We walked all the way around the school, and nothing as changed, all the rooms are same with the original doors seems a little run down.
The tennis courts are all over grown, but we had some happy times.
I went to school when Barry Wilkinson Roy Jepson Trevor Bingham all lived around your area.

Hi Norton girl. My husbands Aunt and cousins were the Mathews and his grandmother Travis lived at number 15.
I am sorry to say that his Aunt died three years ago, she was in her late ninety's, this may seem a strange statement but she enjoyed very good health until the day that she died, it was quite sudden. Peter died last year.
Take care, Cynthia. Canada.

Amelia was my husbands Aunt and David Travis his cousin. Joan still lives on Cobnar Rd.
We came to Canada in 1982, of course we still miss Sheffield and going into Derbyshire as there are no really old villages here with tea shops and little gift stores, on the other hand life is good.
We live about 40 minutes east of Toronto. We can leave our garden chairs, table, barbecue etc. out on the patio and know that they are not going to be stolen. Walk past a group of teenagers and they will say "HI" and move so we can get by them, eat out about 3 times a week and get a starter, main dish and as much tea or coffee as we can drink for approx 6 pounds.
We miss following the Blades, although we do get 3 televised games each saturday morning, going for fish & chips and eating them on our way back home and of course Henderson's.
Wherever I live I will always be a Yorkshire lass and my husband and I have never tried to lose our Yorkshire accents.
Take care, Cynthia.
Well as its my work break and eating a bacon butty I thought I would have a look at this forum my colleagues keep on about all day while I do all the work.
And the Heeley thread was this a blast from the past, I used to live on Artisan View.
Does anyone remember a bloke called Walt Staniland he grew Cauliflowers like footballs, he wouldnt tell anyone his secret.
I remember the Siddals, and read posts by Tosh his sister Jayne was the object of my desire when I was about 13 and one of the brothers chased me off from outside their house when I was hanging around waiting for her, might have been you Tosh, haha
I married a lass Kaz, who was a mate of your Bird Tosh, they lived under the bridge on Heeley bottom and I still see your ex she comes in the shop every morning for bananas and a yoghurt shes either a nurse or a stripogram cos she wears a uniform, shes still hot mate, very tasty, I know you did not marry her cos shes not called Siddal according to her name badge. . Its like a mass exodus when she comes in our shop, all the lads come out of the back room to the shop floor to ogle her. Me and Kaz split but the old days were the best, snogging under skellys bridge, thats when it was safe to walk under there
Were there two chip shops on Boynton Street one at the top and one at the bottom.
I remember Andy Bullen and his sister Susan, and Susan Bennet who lived a couple of doors away from them, on Tillotson Road, they were a bit older than me though.
And Tommy Newcomb the milkman, where have the years gone

norton girl 25-07-2007, 18:25 Hi Cynthia Pleased to hear that you are a Blades supporter. You may remember me if you want to Bramall Lane, I used to walk round the pitch selling programs (wearing hot pants) I was also secretary of the supporters club for 5 years, I was one of the original members of the Junior Blades with Ken Furphy, and ran the under 18 Junior Blades Team.My son Mark and I went to all the matches at home and most of them away. I went with the club when they went to belgium and holland for friendly matches.
When John Harris had his Testimonial at Bramall Lane I was honoured to be asked to be the Secretary for the event.John was a very good friend.

Hi Davided
Banksia here. I'm back home now but have been in contact with some of the school chums and they are talking about another get together nearer to Christmas. I of course will not be there this time but I will keep you informed of developments.
norton girl 17-08-2007, 08:01 hi duffems david travis was born in the house next door to me on mundella place if you see him ask him to cntact me as i would like to see him again didnt he have a sister i think her name was jean his moms name was amelia we played together until he move when he was about 10 his cousins joan and peter mathews lived just down the road peters son christopher played football with my son david they were both in the cubs. i also remenber loretta collis i am sure that she was in my class at carfield school
David Travis and his sister Jean lived next door to myself and my brother Keith on Upper Valley Road, Meersbrook, wasn't his mum from the north east, I seem to recall she had an accent of that area.
Keith has seen David recently, apparently David is a painter and decorater now and he did some work for him. Keith is now widowed, has been for 9 years now, I don't see him very often but, when I do he's usually seen someone from the past. He's met Derek Memmott recently and some others from Carfield but, I've never bumped into anyone since leaving Carfield School in 1962!
Marion Maynard also lived in our yard on Upper Valley and the Storey family were in the yard at the top. We used to play rounders at the top of Upper Valley as there was a huge wall whiich we used as a backstop, we also used to climb over the wall into Dr.Thompon's garden on Upper Albert Road to nick his apples, I always got left behind as I was the smallest so I used to have to walk all the way back round as there was no-one left to give me a leg up!
My husband Roger lived down at the bottom of Upper Valley at number 47 (I think), he was neighbours to David and Peter Horsefield, I think their dad was in the police or something which is why we never played down at the bottom of Upper Valley!
Regards,
Duffems.

Hi,
Loretta Collis was the cousin to my father-in-law (I think), even though she was just a couple years older than my husband her father and my husband's grandfather were brothers. I can vaguely recall her, didn't she have long wavy hair, they lived possibly next door to the Co-op shop on Valley Road. I'm not sure whether she went to Australia way back, I may be wrong as I never actually met her but, I remember somone saying that.
I'll pass on your regards to David via Keith if he sees him, do you want to pass on your name via my pm box?
I can recall the name of Sandra Gregory, wasn't she a friend of Josie Gladwin, there were 3 girls who used to walk home from Carfield together and they were two of them, can't remember the other one's name.
Hope the pups arrive safely.
Regards,
Duffems.

Hi guys, can anyone tell me more details of the reunion?
Posted well back in the thread, I was born 1951 at Heeley and lived on Foster Road before moving into the bakers shop opposite Annes Road school at 146 Gleadless Road.
Friends of friends are running the Waggon & Horses, so would like to be doubly involved......
Mates from that era were amongst others the Siddalls on Foster Rd & the Lockwoods on Tillotson Rd
More details please!
neil memmott 11-10-2007, 20:56 Hello Scout,
We both remember Billie Makinson and his father who I believe had the same name. Yes, he came round the district on Friday nights in the 1950's and all the kids used to come out and follow them around. We both lived on Upper Valley Road as kids, myself at the top and my husband at the bottom and when Billie's horse used to "empty his bladder" it used to reach all the way down from our house to my husband's at the bottom ( the things that amuse you as kids!). My mother never liked buying anything from them as the horse used to smell so much in Summer. Both Billie and his father were very ruddy-faced cheerful men and didn't mind us kids, I remember Billie senior chanting "Okey pokey penny a lump, the more you eat the more ...........!"
I don't recall your father's name but I'll ask my mum as all her family were from Heeley/Meersbrook.
My grandfather was a dry-stone grinder and worked on Heeley bottom (Guernsey Road) at Dickinson's where they produced knives and forks.
Regards,
Heeley Duffems.
Billy Mackinson and lad used to visit Upper Valley Road every Tues and Friday nights. My memory of the 'old man' was his call of 'Here's the only man who ever fought a monkey in a dustbin, and then he came out without a scratch". In bed I used to listen to them leave their patch (around 9.30pm at the top of Upper Valley which was flat) take it slowly down past our house which was on the slope and when they reached the corner of Upper Valley and Kent Road (which became flat again) and to a kid my age at that time raced seemingly at a charge down the rest of Upper Valley until it sloped again at Valley Rd.
I think it probable that the Mackinson's fruit and veg shop at the top of Twentywell lane at Bradway is of the same family. Sadly no horse and cart.
Applegrim 11-10-2007, 20:59 hi Hitone 1,
I've given you all the information I've got at the moment, I have helped organise two reunions and only managed to get to one, but I was told the last one went very well, even though Banksia won't make the next one, I understand this to be a regular meeting for all our friends. I can't see me getting to the next one either but if anymore information comes my way I will post it on here and hopefully you will all have a great time.
Hi Neil,
You lived near to us on Upper Valley Road, we used to be at Carfiled School with Derek, your brother, how is he, we haven't seen him since about 1970 when I saw him on a bus going home from my "hen night", gosh 37 years ago!
Did you also have another brother who was in the guards, I can recall seeing one of you in uniform but, you were all quite a bit older than my husband and myself as we were the same age as Derek. We both recall Derek knocking out his front teeth when he came down Kent Road into the railings at the bottom.
Can you remember the name of Billie Makinson's horse, my husband and myself have been having a laugh as we both think that even the horse was called Billie!
Do you remember Marion Maynard who lived in our yard along with David Travis, she was also older than me in fact, they all seemed to be older and bigger than me which is why my brother called me Titch.
Regards,
Duffems

Remember John & Malcolm & your good self (Just) (It's an age thing LOL).
Also all of the Lockwoods Mum & Dad who are Nellie and Sonnie and kids John & Stephen.
My Mums still in touch with them - my parents Joyce & Arnie had the bakers shop opposite the school. Lived there with Keith my brother & Anne my sister.
John took me to Bramall Lane when I was a kid & been a Blade ever since,He reminded me of John Travolta in Grease he had a simular hair style,Stephen or Big Un as he was also known was a good bloke,I used the Lockwoods phone to ring the fire brigade ,when my kid brother set fire to the cellar ,he did it by using my Lancaster Bomber model,he tied a bit of cloth to the tail & set fire to it & he set the coal muck on fire,I could not believe him doing that ,but he was alway's a little sod who caused me trouble.Mind you I ran up to the Upper Heeley WMC & fetched my Dad & he didn't half paste him,oh what good old day's.Ask your Mum if she will send all my best to them.Cheers T.S
neil memmott 12-10-2007, 15:43 Hi Duffems
I well remember the Travis's and Maynards. Mrs Travis came from the north east, Newcastle I think, I remember them being a nice family.
I hav'nt seen my brother Derek for a little while now but when I did see him last he was fine although he had been quite ill prior to that. He lives in Ecclesall Road with his partner Brenda and still does a lot of fishing down in Lincolnshire. I had two other brothers, Roy the elder was in the Artillery, unfortunately he died of cancer a few years ago, my other elder brother Terry was in the RAF and he still lives in Meersbrook, my sister Maureen lives at Sothall and I live in Totley.
Billie Makinson's horse probably was called Billie, I don't honestly know but I'll see if I can find out and I'll post it to you.
Regards
Neil
Hi Neil,
Mrs. Travis was from the north east, a very nice lady, I think David lives Totley way, he did some decorating for my brother a few months ago.
I'm sorry to hear about your brother, I didn't know him, I just remember one of the "Memmott lads" being in the forces, for some reason both my husband and myself thought he was in the guards.
My husband lived at the bottom of Upper Valley Road at No.47 with his parents and grandparents. We both went to Carfield School and, I worked out the other day that we've actually known each other for 51 years this year and been married for 37 of those, I'll not tell you what his reply was!
Do you remember the Ducker lads, my brother was pals with the youngest Alan (I think) but, they used to scare me especially the older one Barry (I think). The Storeys were good kids but, I gather that they are no longer with us or at least Sylvia and Michael, too young.
I suppose Maz Maynard was in the same year as you? I haven't seen her since we left Upper Valley Road to move into Heeley in about 1959 though I continued to attend Carfield School until I passed 13+ to go to Brincliffe Grammar School.
Happy days at Meersbrook Park being chased by old "Tinlanks", having to climb over the gate when he locked us in, can you imagine "Health & Safety" nowadays having to deal with that!
Regards,
Duffem
neil memmott 12-10-2007, 16:54 Hi Duffem,
I certainly remember Barry & Alan, Barry was "like crazy" man (in the nicest possible way of course) the last time I saw him was at Hillsboro years ago and Alan longer than that.
The Storeys from the end house I remember well. Who was the family next door to the Storeys? I remember a girl called Ann but cannot remember their surname. I'ts just come to me 'Darling' was their name, remember? Then there were the Jacksons opposite you and the Bowers just below etc etc.
"Tinlanks" yes, he had a whistle too, just like the cops.
Regards
N
neil memmott 12-10-2007, 17:04 Hey Davided,
I reckon your my old mucker David Edwards from Rushdale & Carfield. Obviously still chirpy and croaking down the mike too'.
I wondered where you left FR for. An old pal in Londonderry mailed me yesterday to say she had seen my name on this site, I did'nt know of it's existance until then, the rest is history as they say.
No doubt we'll be hearing from you.
regards
Neil
PS the little shop half way down Upper Valley was Mrs. Gregory's, two other things she sold were bread and gravy salt, hows bout that then.
neil memmott 12-10-2007, 17:56 Duffems I'm wrong, the "Darlings" lived further down the road next to Mrs. Simpson who was a very nice and generous old lady who lived with her son at the corner of Kent Hill and our slice of Upper Valley, so the question remains, who lived between the Storeys and the Lingards with a daughter called Ann? Any clues?
regards,
N
Ann Holt, my brother rather liked her, she was a fair-haired girl older than us but, probably about your age. It was the Storeys at the top house next to the big wall, then Holts, Lingards (can't remember Brian at school with us but, I think he was younger, his dad Jack was a nice chap, always singing), then Maynards, us, Travis, then Mrs Croft or Granny Croft as we called her, she was a very sweet old lady, Mrs. Maynards mother, she made very tasty caraway seed cake and had a talking budgie. All of this information is totally irrelevant to anything, just things I recall.
Do you remember the Jackson family across the road, they were Jehovah's Witness people and there was a lot of ill-feeling when their eldest son refused to do his National Service because of his belief, I seem to remember the press being in the road and asking neighbours what they knew of them.
Give our regards to Derek when you next speak to him, he was a good lad at school, and a good laugh too!
Regards,
Duffem
neil memmott 15-10-2007, 12:45 Hi Duffems,
According to "Scout" (Post 158) Billy Makinson's horse was called 'Grey Joe' (not even Grey Billie - shame really).
Yes, I remember the Jacksons, Brian went to prison because of his beliefs as did his mate from Rushdale Mount or Avenue for the same reason. Do you remember John the younger brother who was a big mate of John Curtis from Brooklyn Road and Barry Glynn, well like Barry, John J died at an early age, a great shock to everyone.
Regards
N
Thanks for the name of Billie Makinson's horse, I can now sleep nights!
I remember the younger Jackson son but, I didn't recall his name, he was probably older than me as they all seemed to be, I was born in 1948 and my brother in 1947.
Did it jog your memory about Ann Holt?
Have you ever seen any of the people we've mentioned in these posts as I haven't though we did move from Upper Valley Road in about 1960 to go to live in Heeley and then, of course, Carfield Secondary School closed in 1962, am I right?
Regards,
Duffem
Hi Beaver,
Your OLD mate Davided here. Nice to hear from you again. This site is nostalgic isnt it.
I remember when you had a bonfire on your back garden,we had a good night. But when you got up the next morning the bonfire had burnt all the paint off of the toilet door, the next door neighbours as well.Your dad had to re-paint them both.Of course we had outside toilets in those days. Im still managing to warble a bit as you say.infact im singing on the 16th oct at the FOX AND HOUNDS on Marsh lane, its a 65th birthday party
but all are welcome. Are you still at the D.I.Y.shop. Talk to you again soon
TTFN EDDY
Just realised that your nickname was Beaver, I'd forgotten that, where did it come from?
Duffem
neil memmott 15-10-2007, 15:46 Hi Duffem,
Four of us were christened Beaver at some stage in our lives, my eldest brother Roy once had a bad habit of chewing a matchstick and that is where it all started. Terry was next but not for the same reason it was just passed down. Roy then became "Big Beaver", Terry became "Beaver" and me "Little Beaver" When the two eldest joined the forces, they lost their nicknames, I was just "Beaver" and for some reason Derek became "Badger" and I know people who still call him that, just like "Eddy" calls me Beaver still but he's the only one. So there you have it:-)
Of course, now I remember! We always called Derek "Badger" and, to be honest, we never thought about how the name had derived, bless him, so it's nothing to do with him then it's because of his older brother who set it all off.
My husband was stuck with the name of "Cobber" just because his father had once considered going to live in Australia.
Thanks for clearing up another mystery, we've been arguing about that one all weekend, we've nothing to argue about now we know the name of Billie Makinson's horse and your nickname, spoilsport!
neil memmott 15-10-2007, 16:10 Hi again Duffem,
Ann Holt, spot on thank you. Yes she was quite attractive, I can understand why your brother fancied her, I think a few of us did at the time.
It's hard to remember people I've met since leaving school, I used to see Ray Plumtree from Molloy Street occassionaly way back and have exchanged posts with a few people on Friends and still do with Joan Wood, she lived in Sturge St., in those days and she now lives in Dronfield. We were House Captains of Pitt together.
I bumped into Davided at the Bridge Inn at Ford some years ago, he knew me but I did'nt recognise him at all, he'd grown a big bushy beard since I'd seen him last - no wonder. I'll get him to buy me a pint at the tre-union!!!!
regards
N
My husband wants to know what happened to Barry Gazzard?
Duffem
neil memmott 15-10-2007, 16:54 Now then you Old Scoundrel, you sound on good form. Your so right about nostalgia on this site, bet you don't remember what colour me Dad painted the toilet doors do you cos I can't. Yes they were all outside loos in UV and Rushdale, I remember yours was a mile trek from your back door, you had to plan in advance to go to that loo.
When did you move to Marsh Lane, the only reason I ask is that I had it in the back of my mind you lived at Handsworth or was it Ridgeway?
Unfortunately I can't make the Fox tomorrow but I'll catch up with you in some hostelry one day and buy thi a pint.
The hardware shop (Busy Bee) closed it's doors for the last time last Christmas, it's now an animal feedstore, hosses and the like. I had a short spell at Macs DIY in White Lane after that but did'nt like it there and left. I'm now quietly contemplating how to fill the time between now and final retirement in three years, idealy something part time and local, like an engine driver.
Hasten slowly

neil memmott 15-10-2007, 16:57 Hi Duffem,
Barry Gazzard is a name I remember, he lived on Rushdale did'nt he? Do you know I've no idea at this moment but leave it with me whilst I take a trip down memory lane:-)
N
Neil try green,Yes our toilet was a mile trec from the back door, no good if you had the runs, too late by the time you`d got there. It was uphill as well. I did live at Handsworth
then Halfway then Bollsover then Kiveton then Dronfield then Renishaw. Finally landing at Marsh Lane 18 Months ago. Now you know why i bought a caravan.Oh i lived in that for 2 years also.I moved from halfway when my marriage broke down, that was 9 years ago. Live with my partner Mary now.Yes i would very much like to have a pint or two with you, say the time and place and ill be there. Its also a good way of filling in the time between now and retirement.I retired when i was 50 so am used to having time on my hands.
Slowly is the only way
Dave
neil memmott 15-10-2007, 20:25 "Quote" 'Slowly is the only way' Depends on what you're talking about, if it's learning how to Ice Skate then you're dead right Brother:-)
neil memmott 17-10-2007, 20:38 Davided,
How are you after your 65th Birthday party last night at the Fox, did the locals put on a good night for you. S'funny you know, I always thought your burfday was Dec 8th so you can see why I'm a bit confused, anyway as long as they put a good night on, what does it matter. Was the turn any good, you get so much rubbish about these days, you know the type of thing I'm on about, some guy comes along with a couple of big speakers, a CD player with something like six drawers in it all full of pre-recordered background music an he/she just sits on a high bar stool and does a Karioke job, I don't get it mate, a pro like you must shudder when you and your band get out the van and carry all your gear onto a stage and have to set it up and all that sort of stuff, the drum kit, all those speakers, tripods, guitars, keyboards etc., etc, and then to take them all down again at the end of the jig:-) and take em' downstairs out to the van, load em' up, drop everybody and their girls off and finally roll into bed bout' four in the morning. No wonder you been retired since 50 me old pal, I'm surprised after all that lot that can lift a mike to your mouth. Happy 65th anyway.
Must ask you before dashing awf, do you get any embarrasing moments when you and your big band are on stage? i.e. like the ex turning up and demanding money for all the ten kids she's had since you parted all those years ago. Go on, tell us some of the juicy bits, it's not all pints and crisps.
Talking about crisps, do you remember those packets of Smith's crisps (there was only plain) with the blue salt packet, particularly around Christmas. Sometimes there were more blue packets than there were crisps, there were so many that people used to save them for when it snowed an put the salt on the pavement to clear it, lot better than ashes, anyway ashes did'nt taste very nice on crisps did they. Also do you remember us getting p----- on Peardrax, yes you've forgotten that av'nt you'se. 1/10d a large bottle from Robboe's (2d on't bottle as well Bro'). Ee I remember it as a lad.
Give my love to your Grandma, how is she by the way, has she got one of them trolley jobs wiv a wheel on each corner and a "Go faster stripe down each side?
Hasten slowly buddy,

I am related to the shackleton family that you were searching for a while ago.
They still live in Sheffield but i don't and never have.
If you want to know more please let me know and i will try to find out more for you.
neil memmott 21-10-2007, 12:22 Hi Blackadder, just come across your mail about the Cartwright family. My eldest brother Roy married Irene and they lived three houses from the top of the "49 steps" for a while before moving onto the newly built Gosforth Valley estate at Dronfield. They had one daughter Susie who married Tim. I am not sure if they have one or two children.
Roy unfortunately died a few years ago from cancer of the throat but Irene still lives in the house at Gosforth.

Hello there Neil Memmott, are you by any chance related to a Henry Memmott who was a Plumber and once worked for Reeves Charlesworth ?
High Neil Davided here, there must have been a misunderstanding about the 65th birthday do,it wasnt mine.I was booked as the entertainer for the evening.MY Big Band days ended with my divorce need i say thats what caused it.I just sing for my own pleasure now, as and when the mood takes me.Unfortunately i have had to revert back to backing tracks again as most solo artists do these days but its not like singing with the proper set-up. You were right about my birthday being the 8th Dec.MOM,s still going strong 83 and still got all her faculties, its the joints thats her problem. I know the feeling. TTFN Dave
neil memmott 21-10-2007, 15:54 Hello Lazarus,
Thanks for calling. Henry was my Dad and he was certainly a plumber of the old school.
Reeves Charlesworth was one of the companies he worked for. I remember him on various new build sites for the Council, one near the university and I'm sure he had a spell on Park Hill also as well as others. He finished his working life with the Public Works Dept., at the Arbourthorne Depot. He suffered from Angina which sadly caught up with him just a few years after he retired.
neil memmott 21-10-2007, 16:18 Hi Matey, good to hear from you.
Ref your birthday, I'm not sure what's gone wrong in your life but you could spot a "wind up" coming in a split second at one time, seems that you're losing it mi boy, drink more beer, it's the only remedy. All that apart, I was so pleased to read that Mom's still going strong give her my regards, when you look back, she was good at "winding up" when we were kids. Do you know that I thought so much of yer Mam that I named our shower after her. 1994 when my Mom died and Dad went a few years before she.
How's Stephen these days, is he still around these parts and what's he do for a living, he obviously does'nt sing or you would have been "The Edwardy Bros".
I've just got back from our eldest son Paul who lives opposite Graves Park, I've never seen so many people strolling around in short sleeves and the like at this time of year before, mind you the days at the moment have been wonderful, not even put the garden furniture away yet.
Right then you rascal, I'll leave yer in peace.
Hasten slowly

neil memmott 21-10-2007, 16:23 Duffem,
I'm not getting far with Barry Gazzard at the moment but still trying. He's not in any directories but he could of course be "Ex Dir."

I worked with your Dad up on Herdings in the early sixties as a fifteen year old straight from school. I always found him to be a very nice man, he used to always keep his little finger straight while he was working ( I dont know if he had injured it at some time ) but after working with him for a year I started to do the same.It always amazed me how he could keep a cigarette in his mouth without the smoke annoying him.Im sorry to hear he has passed away.Again a very nice man.
neil memmott 21-10-2007, 20:15 Thanks for that Lazarus,
Dad's most treasured tool was his "Max Sievit" blow lamp. I think my brother Terry has it now. Dad was an artist in copper pipe, he could design and make anything. Back in Upper Valley Rd., where we lived he and me were down in the cellar making something, I forgot what but it entailed firing this blow lamp of his. To light it he had to prime it by by pumping air into the petrol tank, opening a valve which let petrol run into a resevoir below the fire tube and lighting it. This particular day he did all this and set the petrol on fire (part of the process of firing this thing up) put a Park Drive in his mouth, then put his finger in the burning petrol which immediately caught fire, lit his fag and blew the flame out on his burning finger. Casually, he said "Don't tell your Mother you've seen that"
Brilliant plumber me Dad Oh! and copper pipe artist. Liked his beer also, me Dad was an artist in many things come to think of it. Loved him dearly.

neil memmott 28-10-2007, 21:19 Davided,
I saw something yesterday which reminded me of "Honeyballs" sweetshop, corner Kent and Albert. Do you remember that place, the two things you could get there and nowhere else, (not even old Blakey in Valley as far as I know) was root liquorice and cinder toffee, now that's goin' back. "Over the rickety bridge".
N
Hi NEIL.
Yes i remember it well also the rickety old bridge. We used to walk across the hand rail, fell off once or twice as well. Do you remember the scout hut or bug hut as we called it then. they used to hold a dance on thursday nights. it was old time dancing at first and then a few orf us went taking our own discs to play. It wasnt long before the old ones left and it became a disco.
Ive just been browsing through and what memories you have brought back. 1993 I had the hairdressing Salon at the corner of Hyde Road and Boyton Street.I remember colouring and styling Sue Marshalls hair, trying to get the perfect one for her Wedding.Even going to the Hospital to see her and the only thing she talked about was getting married. My Sisters and I knew how desperately ill she was but she was certain she would recover. What a lovely girl she was.
neil memmott 04-11-2007, 21:37 Hi Matey, how yer doing,
The old rickety bridge, best thing that happened to that was when the truck lost it's brakes and ploughed through the lot and into the river. It was the only time we were on't front page of "The Star".
"The Bug Hut", there's somethings in life yer cannot forget. Thursday nights was a closed institution to the old ladies of the district, a Fox Trot here a slow Quickstep there (Brucey Baby will know the answer but what in Gutten Himmel is a slow Quickstep) I digress ole buddy, yes we went along there because the lasses of the district got to the age where it was the done thing to learn the dance and of course we fellows were "getting a little warm" if "not the hots" for one or two of them (we could manage one or two of them in those days), I digress yet again. Yes me ole mucker it was us that started to take our own discs in there which was OK when we asked if they would play "Baby Face" but not tellin' them that it was by Little Richard and "Wait till the sinshines Nellie" by Buddy Holly etc, etc. all songs they knew but in a totally different "Genre" eh now that's an Americanisam init, Genre what the BH (They were the the initials of Buddy Holly, Bob Hope, Betty Hutton, etc, etc.) is a Genre? The kids will tell me, anyway I digress, back to the local Hop. We gradually took over but it was inevitable, times they were a changing, a new waive of music was upon us and yes it was disastrous for the ole folk, it was'nt just a new waive, it was, Oh yes it was the age of (dare I say it) the age of Rock 'n' Roll. Bill Haley with his kiss curl, Little Dick, Chuck Berry, Buddy of course, Elvis and the lists goes on, music that changed the western world, even Rolf Harris could'nt stop the march, the rest as they (who are they?) is history.
One thing I don't remember is the Disco days at the bug hut, I was probably playing elsewhere by then.
Have a good week bud, did you light your sparklers tonight or are you leaving them for the right day as I am, got some coloured matches an all this year.:-)

I am related to the shackleton family that you were searching for a while ago.
They still live in Sheffield but i don't and never have.
If you want to know more please let me know and i will try to find out more for you.
Hi RayS a friend of mine said she has seen Shaun & told him I send my best,we used to be big mate's in the 70s ,he was a top lad, craig was a little sod though,my kid brothers was as well so nothing changed. If you see him just tell him if he remembers Skeggy in the early 70s.
neil memmott 05-11-2007, 17:16 I knew there was something I meant to ask you and it's just come into my head, the Jackson family that lived next door to youin Rushdale, am I right in thinking that they were'nt only neighbours but also relatives of yours? There is a very good reason for asking this ole buddy but it depends on what your answer is. Wink wink.
Hi Neil,Sorry for the dalay in answering,Weve just got back from van. Taking advantage whilst the wether is holding. The Jacksons are cousins of mine and lived next door on Rushdale. Am i right in thinking Terry married Barbara.Last time i saw Terry was in the GEORGE pub at Holmsfield one Wed night, It was Jaz night, He did recognise me eventualy. Barbara wasnt with him though
neil memmott 07-11-2007, 22:20 Davided,
My eyes are full, you do realise that the revelation you have just made (sob) means that somewhere down the line we are related (Oh sob, sob). As you are five days younger than me I could be your great whatever but funnily enough I do happen to know someone who might just have the answer to this and if so how many groats you lot owe me:-)
N
Dear great whatever, All those groats that i owe you, just knock it off the inheritance that im in line for when you leave us.At long last a millionare in the family. The first weeks drinks are on you oh long lost friend. Give my regards to Babs, shes the one responsible for my unfortunate gain.
Lots of sobs Dave.
neil memmott 15-11-2007, 21:24 Hi Dave,

terry.jan@nt 18-11-2007, 14:06 Hi there. does anyone remember the Thompson family from Sruge Street. I need to contact Peter Thompson who also drank in the Boilermakers, please put me in touch with Peter Thompson, my brother - in - law URGENTLY
Plain Talker 18-11-2007, 15:21 Hi there. does anyone remember the Thompson family from Sruge Street. I need to contact Peter Thompson who also drank in the Boilermakers, please put me in touch with Peter Thompson, my brother - in - law URGENTLY
Do you mean STURGE Street?
Sturge street no longer exisits, it was demolished late 1970s, and new council housing put ion its place, called Sturge Croft.
Good luck tracing your relatives.
Does anybody remember Laurence Richardson? From Rushdale Road .
neil memmott 18-11-2007, 22:06 Yes, I do but vaguely. I seem to think he lived in the first passage down from Harry Robert's butchers shop. Lol was a quiet unassuming sort of person. Davided most remember him well as they lived only a few hundred yards from each other on the opposite side of the road. Bet Davided is down at the van pumping up the tyres. He'll be back again tomorrow.
Hi Rhonda Davided here. I remember Lol well and also his brother Ron. He had a sister but i cant remember her name. Ron was older than Lol. Its right what Neil says about Lol and where he lived. Neil was my best friend but i also knocked about with Lol and Howard Blackwell. In those days Lol had all the top music i think Ron used to buy all the discs though. Yes Lol was and im sure he still is one of the better lads on Rushdale. I had a lot of time for him. Do you know him well Rhonda or is he just a memory now
N hope to get to reunion on 5th Dec thats if im not tyre blowing
D
Davided. I know Lol very well .I also know your Mother glad to hear she is still ok.Lol told me he used to knock about with you.I told him about Sheffield forum he might get in touch.
Thanks for that Rhonda It would be nice to have contact once again. If you are interested there is a Heeley reunion coming up on the 5th December at Waggon and Horses at Millhouses, perhapse Lol might be lnterested
Hi Davidof, Ill tell Lol about the reunion. He,s still got the best in music though I think his taste has changed. Can you remember the nickname of Ronnie who used to keep the corner shop. It was Cyrano. Also can you remember Connie the milk woman who also used her car as a taxi. Maybe before your time.!!!
neil memmott 19-11-2007, 17:27 Hey you two, talking about Ronnie do you remember when the shop was getting a bit full, he would shout upstairs to his missus at the top of his voice "U-----" (you finish it cos I want to know if your remember) and about half an hour later she would appear. Wow.
N.ursula rings a bell I was always fascinated with the trap doors at front of the shop especially when they had a beer delivery and they used to roll the barrels down the slope at the side into the cellar. Do you remember Les Freeman he used to climb over Robo`s
back wall, nick his beer bottles from the crates then take them back into the shop and get 2p back on the bottles. Now thats enterprise
Rhonda, was Connie the one who used to deliver milk on a bike with a big basket on the front (not Connie the bike) i think this was before she started using her car.Wasnt it someone called Warns that had the milk round. Are you from Rushdale Rhonda im curious to know how you knew my dear old Mom she`s 83 now and still going strong. Shes just had a load of workmen in her Bungalow refurbishing it and loved every minute of it
Davidof, Yes I did live on Rushdale Road. Mr Worns was the milkman on the trycycle he lived in Albert Road.Connie drove an old ford I think. She lived on Rushdale past where Dobsons lived.
Sorry Davided i've turned you into a Russian . I think I had my mind on Ronnie who when he gave any femail thier change used to squeeze your hand.!!
Rhonda you are playing your cards very close to you chest. A little more info wont go amiss like are you still on Rushy or what number did you live at or how close are you to Lol.I promise you this info will be kept strictly between you and i and Lol.None of this info will get back to Russia
Your friend Davidofski
terry.jan@nt 19-11-2007, 21:23 [QUOTE=davided;2438261]hi norton girl, davided here,
welcome to the forum june shirley,i think.
the forum has some interesting topics. how long have you been up norton and did you live at heely. i lived on rushdale road at meersbrook, live on marsh lane now.lets know a bit more about you please
by for now dave.
Hi Davided. I ( terry puttrell ) used to live at 142 rushdale road up until 1956, When was you there and what No.
Terry
neil memmott 19-11-2007, 22:26 He's in the Butcher's Arms Terry, he'll get back to in 5 or 6 pints time:-)
Hi Terry I was born there in 1944 and lived on Rushdale untill 1964.We lived at 120opposite what we called the Bomb site. They used to park all the cars on it. On bonfire night thats where we had it and Harry Roberts the butcher used to come and light it.I also had a brother called Steven.Mom and Dad lived there till about 1984. They then moved to Handsworh.Dad passed on a couple of years after moving but Dear old Mom is still there.
Neil you can read me like a book but only 5 or 6 pints oh happy days
Davided, When I lived on Rushdale The corner shop At the corner of the Avenue was a pikelet maker !! Then a grocer's. When it was a grocers the people who lived there were called Ashmore and the eldest Son was a roadie for Dave Berry!!
Rhonda that's the shop that was a hairdressers as well wans`t it (ladies).Dave Berry now there`s a legend.I know Dave well infact his lead guitarist (Jason) taught me how to play the guitar, Daves still doing the rounds, he dose Butlins a lot. Im not as old as Mr Berry but im still doing the rounds as well. You cant keep an old crooner down. I do mostly country now obviously the old type proper country as i call it.
Davided, I think this was the early sixties when Dave made "The Crying Game" and he still sings it as good. Mr.England had the newsagent's and haberdashers at the corner of Rushdale opposite the chemist. I can remember both Mr England and the chemist were " terribly posh".We moved away in '62 and went to Gleadless and shortly after we were there The Beatles came to the Azena as it was then they honoured the booking even though they had their first top record. God what a long time ago.
Well Rushdale Road was awash with shops in those days at the other end of Rushdale was Richards another Newsagents and across from him was another grocers cant remember their names . Then across from Robinsons was Hartleys the fruit shop and where the Bomb sight was used to be a chip shop.Harry Roberts the Butchers. I hav`nt been down Rushdale for a number of years but its all changed now. I think the Scout Hut is still over the back though. It might not be a Scout Hut anymore. I believe the Garages have all gone as well. Please give my best to Lol, the last time i saw him was in a pub (thats not like me) on Narroy Street called the Lord Nelson. Narroy Street runs of Saville Street. Think Lol had been to a Convention or such like. Ask him if he remembers. I worked at Firth Browns then.
terry.jan@nt 21-11-2007, 16:56 Does anyone also remember Miss Tesh the PE teacher !
Terryjan.
terry.jan@nt 21-11-2007, 16:58 does anyone also remember the PE teacher Miss Tesh !

neil memmott 21-11-2007, 21:49 I don't but I remember my sister Maureen (nee Memmott) talking about a PE teacher called Miss Tesh. I'm sure this doesn't help you at all, at all.

Just read the Heeley Memories thread as I have been off line for the last few weeks.
Although Amelia Travis was born in Newcastle the family moved to Halifax when she was a girl due to the collapse of the shipyards.
The late Peter Mathews did not have a son called Christopher, his younger son is called David.
Have sent you a PR.

Applegrim 06-12-2007, 22:45 Well did anyone go to the reunion last night? I was hoping to get to know how it went, if any of you have sobered up, please let me know how it went. Thanks

Applegrim 15-12-2007, 14:39 Well regarding the reunion, the silence is deafening, I take it you all had a wonderful time then?
MonksKirby 17-12-2007, 14:59 This is going back donkeys years, Ray Shacklton would be possibly 70 now, so it must be grandchildren you know, they used to live up Gregory Road, on the right hand side opposite the Boards, Ray also had a brother, but I can't recall his name. they knocked about with Nick Carter who lived at the end of Foster road, he was the son of Nick Carter the Barber, who's shop was opposite Heeley Church.Does anyone remember "Chopper" who sold fruit and fish and flowers outside the Waggon? if you wanted him to serve you , you had to knock on the pub window, or what about Mickie Parelli who lived on Cambridge Road, at Christmas he'd dress a wall clock up with a santa's face, and he had a stuffed bird in a cage that he'd wind up asd let it sing. These small things seemed to make us so happy back then, and why we remember Heeley with such Happiness.
Ray Shackleton's brother was called Brian and he was two years older. His pal from the barbers was Dave Carter who was the youngest of four brothers belonging to 'Nick' Carter the barber. The group he went around with comprised Bob Carlisle (Gregory Rd) Jack Russell (Tillotson Rd) Graham Marshall (Carter Rd) Harry Nowill (Carter Rd) I also remember 'Chopper' Shirtcliffe and also Micket Pirrelli with his ornamental birds!
Hi applegrim. Doesn`t look as though anyone went to the reunion. I could`nt get myself because Mary wasn`t very well, she was laid up with this dreaded bug infact shes only just beginning to feel better.Dont know whether my old mate Neil Memmott went but i think he would have replied by now.I owe him an apology to missed his b/day. Are you keeping ok hav`nt heard from you for a while.

Applegrim 17-12-2007, 19:25 Hi Davided, I'm going to hospital for some results this week, and I'm having respite as my dear husband is in a residential home for the week, so I have a full week doing what I want to do, when I want to do it, and up to now it seems that I will be eating lots of Christmas pudding and seeing lots of old friends, even perhaps a drink or two as well!
I think the reunion went very well, an old boyfriend has contacted me and he went and really enjoyed it, they all wore name tags in case they didn't recognise each other which I find very amusing.
Hope you have a great Christmas and that Mary is feeling better.
Hi again Applegrim, I hope your results are favourable and that you have a restful week. Dont go inviting old boyfriends round, its rest and relaxation you kneed. Looking after people who are unable to look after themselves is very taxing so a week of respite is a tonic for you. Not being disrespectful to the infirm but people dont realize how time consuming for the people looking after them can be. Everybody needs some time out for themselves.I hope you have a very good Xmas ,Christmas pud and all. you deserve it. lots of love.
Davided
Applegrim talking about name tags Mary has to ware one when we go to Asda so that i can recognise her and i have to take the dog with me when i go for a walk its the only way i can find my way back.
Davided
MonksKirby 18-12-2007, 08:35 Hi Angela my last name is also Gillott
My gran and grandad lived at 16 Carter Road - you're not one of my long lost relatives who's now a millionnaire are you?
MonksKirby 18-12-2007, 09:16 We used to sledge down Carter Road till my gran always came out with a shovel full of ashes from the fire, which stopped us in our tracks as she lived opposite Mrs Maltbys which was right in the middle of our "run" and everyone used to blame me because it was my gran, although no one dared to say anything she was a real tarter.
I think most of the 'real' sledging was done down the 'Little Hill'. The only problem was stopping as you were faced with a short wall with a hell of a drop into Mrs Turley's back yard if you were unlucky! I've an awful feeling that you were referring to my gran with the ashes as she lived at number 16 and she was a tartar!
Applegrim 18-12-2007, 18:46 Hello again Davided, When I said boyfriend I was meaning a male friend rather than female friend, but I was going to ask you if you remembered him, his name is Stuart Rollinson he lived down Queens Road, also David Green went and he lived down Springwood Road.
News just in from Aus.there is a photo from the reunion sent to Aus. from Neville Brinnen, if you get it first will you send it to me.
Banksia will be sending it to me so if I get it first I'll forward it on to you.
That last paragraph is a complete jumble.I have just come back from my first Christmas lunch but I can assure you I've only had one drink.Roll on tomorrow when I'm going for my second Christmas lunch, I might have two drinks and will probably make sense.

Someone mentioned the Gillott surname, does anyone know any of them or are there any who come on this post as I'm doing a bit of family research and Gillott is one of the surnames in my family along with Norton & Aspinall, all from Heeley/Meersbrook as I was too.

We finally got married in 1962 and we live down oposite the Isle of Wight in Gosport, Hants.Would like to get in touch with them.

Applegrim 03-01-2008, 20:31 Thanks Terry, I have sent Veronica a message on Friends Reunited,
but so far haven't had a message back as yet, but if I do I'll pass it on to you, but while I'm here, I have also been wondering what happened to Graham Jepson who lived on Gerard Street Heeley Green, I have never seen or heard about him since school ,he can't have just disappeared, so does anyone know.?
I hope you all had a Wonderful Christmas, and I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

I knew a Stuart Rollinson - he had a sister called Sandra and two brothers called Mick and Teddy. They lived in the next yard to us - on Guernsey Road at the back of Queens Road - near Spaffords.
Hi,Davided have you been down Rushdale Road lately? I went down yesterday from Albert Road over Kent Road where the bridge used to be. Where the garages used to be on the left a new row of town houses has been built behind the houses that were built on the " bomb site". And the shop that was Ronnies is no more its now a house with railings round. And Rushdale Road is now nose to tail with cars. The fish and chip shop is still in Valley Road.

Hi,
Did you notice the "eyesore" which was a house when the bridge was there? I'm amazed that someone is allowed to keep a house in such a state with all the junk outside. My husband's relatives used to live on Rushdale Terrace, I don't know what they would have thought of the old place if they were still with us! We went down that way last week and we were astounded.
We both lived on Upper Valley Road in the 1960's, both attended Carfield and the area was very "neat & tidy" then, it was a lovely place to live as children especially with Meersbrook Park so close by.
I have an old photo (think it's on Picture Sheffield.com) of the bridge as it was with a sign on it, this was before they filled in the river and diverted it.
Regards,
Duffems
Hi,Rhonda Ive not been to Rushdale for years keep threatning to but not got round to it yet. Did you notice whether the scout hut is still there. I well remember the old wooden footbridge we use to walk across the hand rail, Ive fell off many a time and gone with a splash. The old house that Duffens mentions has always been a eyesore the owner used to keep old motor cars on the land in front of it. They had a few summonses from the council but it didnt make any difference. I can remember the old gas lamp with a cross on it. Can you remember anyone called Christine Hunter who went to Carfield ive tried to trace her but got nowhere.
DAVIDED
Hi Davidad. Do you mean the big detached house on the left going up Kent Road? That was a really lovely house in the fifties it belonged to Dr. Thompson who also had his surgery there your Mum will remember it Davidad
The house I mentioned was down at the bottom towards where the bridge was situated over the river, obviously this was before the river was diverted underground. This particular house was there when I lived in the area in the late 1950's -1970's and it was just an ordinary house on the left just as you came across the bridge from Rushdale Terrace (behind the scout huts). Now it's in an appalling state with scrap and rubbish piled everywhere, I'm surprised that the Council haven't evicted them.
Dr.Thompson's house ( as was ) is higher up also on the lefthand side, that now appears to be unoccupied and in a state of disrepair, such a shame as these were quite reasonable properties and probably would still be if they had been maintained.
I suppose we wear our rose-tinted specs when we re-visit old haunts, things have to change don't they!
Duffems
Its the house that Duffems mentioned i think it had a garage underneath it and a big tree growing at the side of it.Doctor Thompson had a orchard in his back garden with a lovely drive leading up to his house i was once apple scrumping and he caught me my punishment from him was a large spoonful of Castor oil. Wondered why i never liked it.
That's correct davided, it had a garage underneath it though it's difficult to tell now as it's such a state. Dr.Thompson's house is still there but, it looks like there's been a fire at some point as there is a lot of charcoaled wood, sad really. I think we all had a go at Dr.Thompson's apples at some stage though, we must have been lighter on our feet than you as we never got caught!
The whole area around there is rather shabby, though I'll probably get loads of folk saying that they still live there and it's wonderful so I had better get me coat now!
Regards,
Duffems
Applegrim 04-01-2008, 20:12 A friend took me down to see Kent Road just before Christmas,we went down past Dr Thompsons which was a beautiful old house in it's time with gardens and an orchard, it is unbelievable whats heppened there, how can anyone make such a mess as this?
Also at the back of what was the sweet shop on Albert Road, it seems as though Mr Treebus in the Life of Grime program has come back, there's one thing fore sure his was definatly no worse than what is now down at the bottom of Kent Road. If you haven't seen it Davided you should, because you'll get the shock of your life. The detached house opposite was boarded up as well, I'm only glad I don't live near there because no one would buy those houses down there now.
Dont know whether i should go or not,it might be better remembering it as it was.Rhonda says that the corner shop on Rushdale is closed as well, my mother worked there when Ronnie Robinson owned it. Like Duffems says time changes everything and dont we... all know it. I might go and have a look though out of idle curiosity
I remember Robbo moving in to the shop but, I can't remember who had the shop before. We went to school with the son of the lad of the greengrocer whose shop was opposite corner to Robbo's, the shop was named Shaw's Greengrocers, the son was called John Shaw. They had a grey Hillman Huskey, the one with the back opening, it was the first time we'd ever seen anyone with a brand new car! There weren't many cars on any of the roads around Meersbrook/Heeley which is why we were able to play rounders in the street especially at the top of our road Upper Valley until the ball went over into Upper Albert Road then we all had to leg round to try to find the ball before it disappeared down Upper Albert! Some of us used to scramble over the wall at the top of Upper Valley into the Doctors (can't remember his name) garden, didn't do it very often as we "got done" by him then our mothers!
I still can't believe that when we played a game of "hide & seek" which went under a different name (which also eludes me, I hate getting towards 60!) we would venture as far afield as Meersbrook Park which, from Upper Valley Road was a fair diistance. The funny thing was that we all forgot what we were supposed to be doing, got distracted in the park then proceeded to start another game. It was only when we come home yonks later that some of the kids were still in the street looking for us, it was usually almost dark, then we'd ask our mums, "Can we stop out a bit longer, it's not coming in time yet!" The mums would then carry on a conversation witht the other mums so we would take advantage of that fact and run off with our mates again, no fear of dark, pervies (weren't heard of anyway), muggers etc. We always came home tired out, mucky, happy and glad to be alive, never heard the word "bored", didn't have time to be bored!
Oh, happy days, Meersbrook/Heeley was a wonderful place in a wonderful era, full of hope.
Sorry for the ramble, put it down to New Year!
Duffems.
The fruit shop on the corner used to be called Hartley's before Shaws took over, it had a wooden trestle at the front under the window. I lived in the seventh house up from shows on the same side. I remember playing out when it started to thunder and lighten and heavens opened. When i got back home Mom asked me where id been during the storm because i was hardly wet .Where had i been sat under the trestle on shaw's front
watching the storm. You could see right to the top of Kent hill then from under that trestle, i was really snug. It amuses me today why certain kids vandalise cars etc and the dogooders say well they have nothing to do and nowhere to go. When we were kids we had even less to do bit didnt vandalise property etc. Respect has gone through the window these days, and so has punishment. a clip round the earhole didnt do me any harm and ive had a few.
DAVIDED
Davidad do you remember Miss Rowlinson the piano teacher. She never married and lived with her parents and taught the piano in the front room. And Miss Carr who taught in the Sunday School at Heeley St Peters which was up Gleadless Road. I lived next door to Miss Carr and she used to terrify me.I had two little boys and if she could hear them she used to knock on my door.Across the road lived Dobson's.This would be around 1954 onwards.
Hi Rhonda, yes i do remember both of them. You must have lived close to Carol Roberts and Irene Vaughan then . I think Carol was adopted. Did David Fairbanks live across as well.Maralin Brewin lived near Lol i think and her dad was Manager of the Heeley Palace.
Rhonda its DAVIDED with a e and not a a not that it matters Ive been called worse
DAVIDED.
Hi Davided, Yes Carol Roberts lived behind us. David Fairbanks lived opposite next to the passage his Mother was a bit strange I think. Wasn't he a friend of yours and Lols. Maralyn Brewin's Father was the manager of the "Star Cinema"She lived in the yard below Lol the other side of the passage.Do you remember the old lady opposite where Lol lived who was always sweeping the front and always angry? Sorry about your name first a Russian and even now spelling it wrong.!! Rhonda
Hi Rhonda,I`m afraid you have me on this one, can`t remember the old lady. Dave Fairbanks was a very good friend of mine he was bus driving the last time i saw him. Lives up Handsworth. Yes his Mother was a lot strange so was his brother Graham. Howard Blackwell was Lol`s best friend i wonder what happened to him. Then there was Neil Broadbent, he was living near to me at one time here on Marsh Lane in a Caravan type thing on a lovely sight. One of his neighbours was Glen Dale of the Fortunes remember them. I`ve sung with Glen a few times lovely man.
Duffems, if you lived up Upper Valley Road do you remember the Fereday's Stephen and Carl? The Dr's name McCullem. He was another fearsome creature. His practice was down Richards Road. He used to stomp about in wellington boots.
Neither myself nor hubby remember the Feredays, I lived right at the top and hubbie down almost opposite Cyprus Road, we remember Hazel Walsh, all born about 1948, maybe you are older, not being disrespectful at all, apologies in advance if you're not!
You're right about the doctors' name, it was McCullem, I never saw him in any footwear other than wellies or wellows as we used to call them.
