If anybody`s interested, whether existing walkers or new people, some of us are planning to do a circular walk, starting at Elsecar and going on to Wentworth and back to Elsecar again. It is not too hilly and mainly on paths thro fields and on country lanes. The walk is around 8 miles and there are lots of interesting follies on the Wentworth estate and even the odd country pub or two along the way!
So due to the distance involved, and as there is likely to be a fair number of stops along the way, it`ll probably be a full day job.
The best way to get to Elsecar on public transport is by train, with there being one at 10.39 which arrives at Elsecar at @ 11.00. Return times are either 15.15 or 17.15.Meeting point would probably best at the station then at 11.00.
Any comments on this proposed walk would be appreciated.

I've been chatting to Taxman about traintimes etc and costs and think I might make it

What are the food arrangements, just so I know to bring food or cash!

Food arrangements are whatever you want them to be!
Bring your own, there`s a pub or two serving food, theres a general store open for snacks, there`ll be chestnuts and mushrooms to forage for! So much choice!
Seriously, everybody has different ideas, but I`ll be buying something somewhere in Wentworth, maybe we`ll split for an hour in Wentworth , have a mooch round and those that want a pub get one, and those that don`t can do summat else!

Just a little more information. As I said earlier in the week, the walk is around 8 miles, but looking on the map, the `1/2 way stopping point` Wentworth, is only 2 miles into it. This is the only place to get food, and find toilet facilities, so it looks like there`ll be an early stop! Thought about going the other way round, but that`d mean not getting to Wentworth till 2ish or later, which is a bit late in the day for lunch I think.
The other thing is, we will go thro` the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse, which is a huge stately home, and according to the Guiness Book of records has the largest no. of windows on a single house frontage in the UK! Anyone with cameras might find some good photo opportunities with this building, Wentworth village, and all the follies that we`ll see on the Wentworth estate.

you can take dogs in the Rockingham Arms in Wentworth, but on the other hand, looking at the weather forecast it`s going to be nice enough to sit outside!

The details of walks are posted on the threads, Philip. Note down the day, meeting place and time and just turn up. You can state that you're coming on the thread, if you wish. Just read through a few threads and you'll see how it works.

If you need to contact people or ask a question, you can post it on the thread and someone will answer. You can also contact by private message, but you have not posted enough to do that yet.

On sunday a couple of us will be getting the train from Sheffield station to Elsecar and will be meeting up with the others at 11am at Elsecar station.

Once you've posted a few more times you will be able to send Private Messages to other people on the forum in order to finalise and meeting arrangements or details

Has anyone got a simple list of times that the trains go from Sheffield to Elsecar on Sunday to arrive for 11am?. I've tried looking up the timetables but there's 57 varieties. :help:

there`s one at 10.39 that gets into Elsecar at 11.0, the one before that is 8.39 I think, cos they`re every 2 hours.
It`s returning that you need to think about, cos there`s one at 15.15 and the next one is 17.15. I think the 15.15 might be too early, what do you think?

Thanks for organising another walk Scubz!

A very good turn-out with Bambi, Purdyamos, Mr and Mrs Strix, Grissom, Altus and Philipz, proving that the walkers group is truely international.

A couple of extremely nice pints to finish off with as well

Thank you scubz, we only got slightly lost! But as cabbage fields go, it was a very scenic one. :P

A very pleasant walk with a good variety of things to see. And two pubs! And a trip on a train - really exciting.

This week's batch. (http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l115/purdyamos/Elsecar%20and%20Wentworth/?action=view&current=DSCN0618.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1)

Fab pics Purdy - now realise the walls you were talking about were Germoline coloured - not German coloured ! No wonder I couldnt work it out at the time...

Thanks to Scubs for another good day out, and also for the lift home. I was feeling very fortunate untill i found i was locked out of my house. Tired, cold and dying for a wee and a cup of tea. Finished up walking around an hour looking for my lad but had no luck, had to wee in the park and scanked a cuppa off a lass i hardly know up the road.
It`s 10 pm and i`ve just got in. Seen loads of bonfires though.

Do you know, my Christmas day was awful, and I started pining for the Countess tea rooms which would have had the surreal comedy element. Shall we make it a date next year?
