View Full Version : Yer Can Tell When Yer Back In Sheffield
stella fan 18-08-2004, 23:10 BECAUSE OF THE SHOCKING ROAD SURFACE'S
It starts on the parkway all the way in.. bump ....bump...bump we must have the worse roads in BRITIAN!!
Even the "new road" off the parkway towards crystal peaks is terrible now, even worse coming towards town.
Have we got the worse road workers or what?
Can they lay a road?
End of moan.
Your right, they re-laid the road up near Norton Areodrome, you've got to drive in lane two as the drains are sunk that low it bounce's you all over.
And what about our all time favorite the viaduct at Tinsley.
richynomates 19-08-2004, 07:43 The best "entrance" to sheffield is on the brilliant smoooth road from Dronfield. All the way from Chesterfield, the road is a dream. You pass the "City of Sheffield" sign, and at that very point it transforms into a rollercoaster. No chance of the Council easing you gently into bad roads - it happens so quickly!
alchresearch 19-08-2004, 07:57 Same with the Parkway when you get off the M1. The A57 from Aston used to be ok but I've not been on there for a while.
A friend from the Netherlands once stayed with me and he said our roads were worse than Poland. I was quite offended until I realised he was right!
You should all be grateful for the wonderful work the council do in keeping exhaust fitters and shock absorber salesmen in work :-)
Classic Rock 19-08-2004, 08:59 We had a band who drove from Guernsey up to play at the Classic Rock Bar, they had a good journey all the way, but as soon as they got to the Parkway the window on their van collapsed as they went over a bump and all their gear was thrown around!
Ned Ludd 19-08-2004, 09:00 The council is to be congratulated. Their policy of of no maintenace saves a fortune on installing road humps. Potholes are so much more cost effective;)
cazzaworld 19-08-2004, 10:40 When I was in France recently, my other half and me noticed how smooth the roads are. Potholes are unheard of. In Sheffield the roads are discusting especially on my beast.
Greybeard 19-08-2004, 11:01 We've had several new or nearly new cars over the past twenty years, all had a whisper quiet ride when we got them, but all except the Lada developed loads of squeaks and rattles after a few months on Sheffiled's roads.
My wife who has driven in Russia says the roads there are only marginally worse than in Sheffield.
Perhaps cars sold in Sheffield should have a special 'Safari' type suspension fitted,- there's no hope of the council fixing the roads; where would they find the couple of billion pounds it would cost to repair them to Derbyshire standards ?
OTOH you've no need to go to a theme park for your thrills and spills; just take a ride round Sheffield upstairs on a double-decker bus, - crash helmets advisable :D
SaxonLeigh 19-08-2004, 11:10 hehe you are making me all laugh! we have all the employees from sheffield city council in to day (all three of them), i'm gona print this tread & hand it to them on the way out!

When I was younger, the highlight of a Saturday trip to town was to come home on the 23 bus down Normanton Springs. Sat upstairs on the front seat was like a white knuckle ride - whizzing down the hill, the front window bashing the trees which overhung the road!
There used to be a definite line across the road near Hollow Meadows where the road went from rough to smooth. Guess which side of the line was rough!
Used to tell the kids it was a fold in the map we'd just driven over.
MrJingles 19-08-2004, 12:01 ...the roundabout at the bottom of Coisley Hill leading onto the Parkway into town is an absolute joke so bad it sometimes knocks my car out of gear.
That must be one of the busiest roads in Sheffield so god knows how they'd re-surface it without causing disaster imagaine everyone from the south of Sheff getting into work via city road and the back of heeley, not good.
I agree the roads here are really bad an absolute disgrace infact, the number of times I've filled in one of those "suggestions" leaflets from the council at the top of fargate moaning about the roads and such - I always get a letter back saying "plans are action".
Shame it never gets sorted but building a city in a load of villages was never gonna be easy.

The whole road from Coisley Hill RB into Woodhouse is a disgrace.
Draggletail 19-08-2004, 13:04 And then there are the unusually high 'humps' on Carterknowle Rd, S11.
I think I counted 27. They are so high that if I am in my work vehicle (Nissan cabstar) I am slowed down to 5 MPH.
Someone told me of a case where residents made the council reduce the height of humps 'cos they where higher than the highest allowed by the EU, or something.
Anyone heard of that?
The worst area I know for roads is in north Kirklees, which is near Huddersfield around Dewsbury

Eeyup! I'm well impressed. I didn't even know that they'd put roads in up there.
