After seeing the devastating pictures from Cornwall over the last few days,I was wondering if anyone was going to start a disaster appeal for the people who have lost everything?
These poor people have had their entire world washed away in a matter of minutes, and i'm sure the sight of John Prescott and Prince Charles is a comfort, but it wont replace their belongings.

If this had happened anywhere else in the world, there would be talking heads on after all the news bulletins, asking us to hand over our hard earned to support the victims.

I was thinking the very same myself.

Boscastle means alot to me, I know the area down there like the back of my hand.

I was under the impression that there is a bit of media hype about the town. Nothing like a bit of disaster footage to get ratings.

Most of the village is further up on the hillside and didn't suffer any damage. There were just a few shops and houses, the road, car park and the village green beside the river that suffered.

That's the impression I got.

It was just a few posh people who could afford houses on the sea front was'nt it?;)

Better be careful where they buy their death nests next time, hey Uncle

No, the "posh" people live up the road.

The people down in Old Boscastle (that was the place that has been hit) are people who've lived there their whole lives.

Unless you've actually been to Boscastle its hard to establish that fact from your armchairs.

Sorry master,

It was meant as in running joke with Uncleheed

Yeah, so i guess it was all planned then?

My sis doesn't live to far away from Boscastle and belive me things are bad down there. But i guess just a few houses and such really isn't that important.

The only appeal I am aware of is the one for Museum Of Witchcraft (http://www.museumofwitchcraft.com./) .
When the floods hit the area the news of it hitting the museum spread like wildfire thru our community. *sigh*

I never said that. I am complaining about the media sensationalism regarding the matter. If it wasn't serious the RAF wouldn't have been airlifting people out and risking a helicopter worth several million pounds by almost landing on rooftops.

The fact is that the cameras are focused on one small patch of town, giving a misleading report.

I'm guessing that most, if not all, of the property lost would be covered by insurance. As far as I'm aware there is no appeal for the victims of the Florida hurricane where there was loss of life. I stand to be corrected on that, though.

GMTV this morning said all the propertys involved in the floods have insurance.

Just as long as the insurers don't try and worm their way out of it by saying flood damage isn't covered, or the old 'act of God' rubbish.

It's very sad that the flood control schemes which may have prevented this weren't to be implemented until September.

I used to know the insurance assessor who appeared on Channel 4 News last night - he used to live in Sheffield (small world innit!!)

It's ok, they've figured out a solution so the floods can never happen again.

There was a reason it was focused on the disaster.

Newscaster:Over to dave who is in the part of town not affected by the floods. Anything happening down there Dave?
Dave: No, a man has just taken his dog for a walk, but that is all but as soon as there is any developments i'll get back to you! This is Dave Balloon for ITN news on dry land!

I have previously stayed in the youth hostel in Boscastle (which was available to rent privately) I believe it is the last building on the right before the start of the harbour.

The stream that runs through the village and out to sea is just that, a stream and I very much doubt that they have had a problem with rain before, or we would have heard about it.

Boscastle is not in a flood plain, it is right at the waters edge and is a beautiful spot to spend a break.

Boscastle also is famous for its blowhole which is quite staggering.

Let us hope that they manage to put it all back together again.

I hope that that was just a one off like the Lynton/Lynmouth disaster
