I heard on the radio that new labour are trying to appeal to middle england.

This concept confused me. I found this definition

Middle America/England

noun {U}

the part of American/English society that is neither rich nor poor and does not have extreme political or religious opinions.

Is this the desired political profile of a voter of New labour? I think it says much about a political party the fact that it is going after people with NO extreme political opinions. Basically, it wants people that haven't a clue and don't have the politcal interest to disect the cover ups and lies. Don't you think that it is a reflection of their policies that anyone with true politcal conviction seems exclude from this definition.

What I'd like to ask is what is your definition of a middle englander and also what constitues extreme political opinions?

I remember once reading an essay in which the writer said that the aim of most people was to be like their friuends and relatives but just that tiny bit richer, that tiny bit better looking and that tiny bit thinner....:-)

Middle England tends to be the quiet folks. They put up with a lot of crap, and tend not to care too much about the issues that the media would like to think they should be worried about.

I don't know what constitutes a middle englander, I'm afraid, but I feel that when the media refers to it as a group they're usually meaning something right of centre, old style conservative (not necessarily old style Tory, but conservative with a small 'c').
