Sorry if this has been covered somewhere in here (i'm at work - shhhhh) and don't have chance to have a good look.

I'm enjoying making jewellery at the mo, and use beads quite a lot. i've got a fairly good selection already, but i'm wanting to find some more. However the only ones i can find are little sets/tubs/pots etc all of one type of colour....

Where can i find beads that are either loose (pick your own) or in smaller packs of colour?
I don't want to buy a whole big pack of beads for 6 black ones..etc...

I live in Chesterfield and work in York if that helps any (probably not...:()

I have a few recommendations for online bead shops, but to my knowledge they only sell beads in little packs or tubes. Let me know if you want a list of the shops anyway.

The only high street shop I've used is The Bead Shop (http://www.mailorder-beads.co.uk/) in Nottingham. It's a bit out of your way, but worth a visit if you're ever in that neck of the woods. The last time I was there, they had tables divided into little compartments each with different beads. You could take a container and choose a selection, a bit like pick and mix at Woolworths :) .

The seed beads and Delicas are only ever sold per weight though. At least, I haven't found anywhere that will sell them, say, per 10.

EDIT: PM beansforyou. She might have some suggestions as she's done a lot of jewellery making too.

I bought alot of mine on Ebay, Hobbycraft also sell beads, but as you say mostly in tubes/prepacked.

The most amazing bead shop i've ever found is in St ives (takes a moment to sigh and wish she was still there) which is a pick and mix shop, sounds a bit like Jencel here in Sheffield, but with the sea outside the door

http://www.gjbeads.co.uk/ < this one.

Ebay is definately the cheapest place i've found to get findings, solid silver etc.

You can also find some gorgeous vintage 'shunklies' at flea markets, car boots etc :)

Just to take this completely off-topic for a minute, you must visit St Ives. It's stunning. While you're in the area, try to visit the Minack (http://www.minack.com/dayvisitors/introduction.htm) and St Michael's Mount (http://www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk/) too. The scenery is breathtaking.

Have a fab time, and congratulations! :)

I went to all those places when i was 9, but can barely remember (though i remember the walking over the causeway ankle deep in water cos the tide was coming in ;))

I really want to go back, sooo much :D

Hi I went to uni in york and did find an amazing tiny put packed craft shop in york with a pick and mix bead section in the back, but that was a couple of years ago so it may not still be there: you go out of the city centre through the walls along high petergate, turn right onto gillygate and its somewhere on the left, nr a fancy dress shop. Unfortunately i cant remember the name, so good luck!!!

I have been to The Bead Shop, in Nottingham. It is very impressive. I've never seen such a good variety. If your really wanting a selection of unique pretty beads, then it's worth the trip.:)

There is a bead fair at York Racecourse this weekend, which might be right up your street. It's £3 to get in. I can't wait.
Also, you might want to try the following. I've not used any of them but they may be worth a look if your in york. I'm fairly sure there is a shop specialising in beads in york as well. I only looked quickly but you could just type 'bead shops' and 'York' into Google.

Have you ever considered making polymer clay beads? You can make exactly what you want in as big or as small batches as you need and you don't have to leave your house to get them. Also since you are making jewelry you can make your beads to suit your projects and you don't have to worry about your stuff looking like anyone else's.
