I'm in dire need of a social life and I want to meet new people. Does anyone out there have any ideas of how I should go about meeting new people? I like to play badminton, but don't have anyone to play with. I also want to try something new; something different.

I know I didn't give you much to go on but here goes..................... I am 39 years old, single and like I said before, I need to get some form of social life going. All my friends are in relationships or they don't have the same interest as me. I have thought about going dancing but thats how far I've got

It took me ages after being on the Forum to take the plunge and meet people but I did eventually and now have loads of things going on. The Walking group, theatre trips, meals, pub meets etc.

It can be scary for a new person but I'd encourage you to get involved.

Most of us don't bite :)

A city is a large community where people are lonesome together.....unfortunately Prochnow was right in some cases.

As you can tell mc55, I am new to the forum. Being a part of the forum isn't as easy as I thought. I've tried to read my personal messages and I can't. Any ideas, why not

You should be able to read Personal Messages but you won't be able to send any until you've got 10 posts

Thanks for that, but the reason for me coming on forum hasn't really been addressed. It isn't easy being single, female (sort of) shy and trying to 'get a life' in Sheffield.

Should that be sort of female or sort of shy?
Sorry couldn`t resist I haven`t played badminton in ages or I would gladly give a game I am also looking for some form of activity to meet new people

No offence taken ANDIM68. I don't want to stick to JUST badminton. I want to try something new, where I can meet other people and start to have different interest.

There are some good walking clubs in Sheffield. Sheffield is on the doorstep of some excellent countryside.....in the Peak District.....theres some great hill walking. Fresh air, exercise, good scenery.....and of course a few pubs! Excellent way to spend a day!

I can`t dance or sing but if you find something exciting to do preferably in day time let us know I`ll try anything legal once...I`d even cosider a walk in the country side but would need to bring the kids can`t leave em alone then again don`t think they`d be up for walking to far

Don't worry, mush. We were all newbies once. Just relax, get to know people, post where you feel the urge, you'll be part of the gang soon enough.

P.S. Thoroughly empathise with your second sentence. You're not the only one by any means who's been in your shoes. :)

It's great to know there is so much going on in Sheffield. I can't wait to get back and quite fancy doing ballroom/salsa dancing, sadly no partner! Sure I will manage to hook up with some mates through here or otherwise!

If you are keen to try dancing get down to the Forum on Division Street for the Salsa nights on Tuesdays.

Should be a good way to have fun and get talking to some new people. I used to go and plan to start going again just as soon as I have a Tuesday night free.

It seems like the best thing for me to do, is to start by going to salsa dance classes. I live up Crookes, are there any dance schools around near to where I live?

I used to do Salsa at City Limits Dance Centre in Walkley. I loved it but no longer have a dance partner. (Not that you really need one by the way.)

City Limits. (http://www.city-limits.co.uk/index2.htm)

I've contacted City Limits Dance classes, but they said that I've left it too late to join because all the classes started in September. however, he did say that I could go and have a look

Hi I was a member of spice and I have met some fab people. I have now become involved in spur into action it is cheaper than spice and smaller. Spur into action has a badminton group. They also have mixer nights, if you fancy trying the mixer nights but do not fancy turning up on your own leave me a message on the forum and I could meet you at a mixer night. I joined spice cos all my friends were getting married/ having children etc. I have made quite a few. I have only just started going to spur into action.

A quick search shows that SpurIntoAction and SpiceUK are some kind of adventure/social clubs. Sounds interesting enough, so has anyone here ever been on any of their outings?

My Mum used to be in Spice back in Manchester. She wasn't single but wanted stuff to do. We went to the theatre, midnight walks, parties, jacuzzie parties, assault course in evening wear, and she did a parachute jump.

Excellent stuff

I have been in contact with Spice and they are sending me some information through the post :) I didn't realise that you had to pay for membership but even still, it looks like a good club. I'll get the chance to meet new people :) and try out new things that I may not have thought about trying
