A big Hollywood style sign with Sheffield (D'uh!) across one of the hills, the one next to the ski slope maybe.

I think that would be an absolutely fantastic idea!

A big city feel and a train station that gives you a sense that you are arriving somewhere other than a minor outpost!

why don't we start supporting leeds united while we're at it?because its not worth appreciating your own city and just wanting improvements, we have to aspire to be like somewhere else.

Late bars.

Hardly any bars are open past 12.

I didnt realise this until I came to sheffield. The night either ends at 11.30 or you have to go to a nightclub, of which there is not a great selection and you have to pay.

I know there are now a couple of late bars but all bars should be allowed to open til at least 1am at the weekend.

It seems we can't win. We suggest improvements and Kirky jumps on their backs saying move to another city, and now this.

I would say that Sheffield needs more hospitals. The waiting list to get the bug out of people's backsides must be enormous.

a mid sized concert venue that attracts regular gigs from decent bands.

TWO, yes two, Premier League footy teams like Liverpool, Birmingham and.. yes dammit, Manchester.

A full on, fully functioning airport.

Proper shops in the town centre instead of cut price crap.

A Chav cull.

Chain gangs where people serving community service orders can really do some use.. cleaning litter, painting, drain clearing etc (wow this is too obvious.. hope a council official is reading).

There are plans in the pipeline for an indoor ski slope> It'll be the biggest in England if not europe and will be sited next to the existing artificial slope. Planning permission is already being sought with the complex expected to be open with a few years.

Isn't this one of the things that the City Hall refurb is addressing? Hope so.

Wavey
18-08-2004, 14:30
well yes, but it's not been attracting the good bands of late. I get fed up of looking at ads for upcoming tours that go everywhere except Sheffield.. or so it seems.

Perhaps the refurb will extend to the booking managers office as well. Here's hoping eh?

Sheffield lacks a main gateway...if you enter via bus or train your stuck miles away with just some smelly subways into the town,
By road you hit a confusing roundabout..it all needs kind of 'simplyfying' a bit. I hate to think people find sheffield a pain...

What Sheffield really needs is a decent ring road... that actually goes all the way round in the same way that the Leeds ring road and the motorway round Manchester do. Getting round Sheffield is definitely more difficult.

But that will get in the way of the Sheffield sign next to the slope:(

Also, what about a real tourist information centre instead of the B&Q £19.99 flat pack version.

Someone in the council who actually knows something - anything - about PR to promote the things Sheffield has got rather than (apparently) doing their best to hide them!

Perhaps it's like the League of Gentlemen - local amenites for local people. The council don't want outsiders coming in buying your goods and using your attractions!

They don't even seem that keen on people from Shefield using them - perhaps they are trying to cut down on cleaning bills by keeping peope away?

A great big cable car system running across the city.

And some tunnels going through the hills. You could cut about five miles off your journey going from the city centre under Manor Top to Normanton Springs rather than going over it!

Machine gun placements around the city centre.

A system of beacon fires.

An enormously complex underground monorail.

A ruddy great wall and a moat with crocodiles in it.

wow....a glimpse into the future...

Would love to know more about this.....

Sheffield should have better transport sevrices, like a motor running clos to the city centre or acting like a ring road like there is in all other big cities in England.
