View Full Version : Botanical garden squirrels
Are the squirrels out and about in the Botanical gardens now?
I am only asking because the kids would love to feed them but it is a big trek for the kids to get there if the squirrels aren't there so I just thought I would see if anyone on here knew.
bladesufc1 23-10-2006, 15:21 havn't you got a garden? put some Squirrel feed on a Squirrel table, they'll come when they realsie there's free food, my dad has got 2 family of Squirrels in his back garden now

They are always about as they don't hibernate, a bag of monkey nuts will get you almost mugged by them.
i wish the ones that frequent my back garden would scoot off to the park instead of digging peanuts into my bonsai trees, i once got home from work and they'd dug one right out of the dish, being a warm summers day, the roots dried out and the tree died
yup- i wish these tree rats would move to somewhere else:mad:
john :(
Squirrels are cute (if damn annoying at times) but don't forget they are rodents and that means they have teeth. One of my earliest memories is a one of my parents friends getting a nasty bite to the finger as she tried to coax a squirrel to take a nut from her hand for my amusement. I remember the incident because I was told many times, I don't actually remember what happened, though I'm sure that I would probably have been allowed to feed them too. If I'd been bit I'd probably have been scared for life and be one of those buggers who take tehir air rifles to the tree rats.

Nope, they're all in my garden. An endangered species. There are only 5 squirrels in Sheffield, and they are currently vacating in my garden. However, I heard that they will be back in the Botanical Gardens for the weekend. :D
raganoonande 24-10-2006, 08:36 I'm thinking of going with my nephew on Saturday. This is the best time for squirrels in the Botanical Gardens, as they are on the search for nuts to bury for winter. Its true what someone said in an earlier post about the monkey nuts, they love them. Last year, someone held one in their hand and held their hand close to their chest, the squirrel rang up their leg, grabbed the nuts and ran back down again, it was really funny.
They're friendly little things, and they don't bite. Just hold your hand straight and keep still and they'll come up no problem. They feel very warm when they put their cute little paws on you.

Cute?! :gag:
If there was one word to describe a squirrel it would be anything BUT cute, theyre more like bushy tailed rats. (3 words)
I have heard of the squirrells being a bit agressive when theyre after nuts, especially the females. I havnt seen it first hand, but if you do decide to feed them, make sure you do it first if your feeding them out of your hand becasue the bites hurt ALOT!

What's wrong with rats? Squirrels, foxes, badgers, rats, they all have as much right to live on this planet as we do. Why do people persecute them as much as they do? What makes us think that we're such special animals?

For you maybe! Not for the bloke concerned, I'm sure! (It's ok I know I've took it out of context...)
To be fair, the ones in the BG are very tame as they dont' get chased by dogs due to them being onlead all the time. I don't know if they bite or not but I think they have so much public attention that they don't fear people as much and don't tend to bite.
Make sure your hands are clean before you feed them otherwise they could smell other food on your hand and mistake a finger for something tasty!
WallBuilder 24-10-2006, 16:34 I've had a squirrel sitting on my shoulder before now and if I know I'm not going to have max with me and I'm going through the gardens I try to remember to have some monkey nuts in my pocket. It's quite funny to realise you are being stalked by the squirrels particularily if you walk along some of the quieter paths.
Be warned though as others have said they can bite so on no account try to pet them or stroke their tails they are after all a wild animal.
I did wonder though with all the drastic clearing that has been going on whether some or a lot of the squirrels had moved to less desecrated area's.

They were every where when we went on Sunday my son had never been and really enjoyed it.We usually go to Rufford as that is nearer for us and is a good walk round the lake to blow the cobwebs off.
Whenever I see a squirrel I always think about the time about 5 years ago when I worked in Orchard Square and a squirrel had actually got into TK MAX!! It was riding on the moving stairs (handrail)!! Yes you read that right! I remember going home from work and telling my 5 year old at the time, and him asking if the squirrel had gone there by bus with an 'all day saver'!!!!

i think you got the wrong end of the stick with my previous comment. I didnt say 'they deserve to die!' i just dislike rats im afraid, the majority spread disease. Squirrels also just annoy me, but i dont think they should be wiped out, theres no question about that.
As for humans being special animals-I think we are a step above rats tbh.

yeah - than you can catch them and eat them
