Savannah2 05-11-2006, 13:31 OOh Savvy, what do we do if it finds problems..
Registry Mechanic makes a back up copy of the registry entries that are removed, so if you have any problems you can restore the .reg files.
More info here (http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/offer.php?ref=google_registry)

I got 31, but to be fair I clean and optermise the registry weekly.
I install a lot of software to test and play with, so it is all junk, mind you I ran my usual cleaner last week and picked up a couple of dozen entries.
fox20thc 05-11-2006, 14:47 I had 11 :D

but was this tool able to sort them out, am i just hopefully just wrong when i think its just there to get you to sign up for the "actual" tool to get rid of them..."if" there are really harmful errors at all, after all how bad did your two machines operate with a combined error number of 1538..:o

im not saying its not a full version savannah...im just asking and no-one has answered it yet....does it sort out the problems it detects because there are many things that some programmes will tell you are an error yet it because its another programme, just in the same way some virus detectors or firewalls block some things as they "believe" it to be alien as its not part of their programming....

I'll try:D..
keithhazel : This is a completely free offer (was given away on a magazine). There are no catches. Nor is any spyware installed during installation (or removal).
It is a good offer (good in that it is free).
There are also nno strings attached (Pinochio).
It even fixes the detected problems, none of this "Click here to buy the full version" garbage.
It works as you would expect (except on one of the machine here - see below).
Any use?:P
BTW... It crashes with an Invalid Page Error on this box, others are fine with it:confused:
keithhazel 05-11-2006, 16:00 I'll try:D..

again i dont doubt its a "real" freebie...just you have not said whether it actually sorts out the errors or just tells you there are some...

Savannah2 has pointed us to this free download. Neither she, nor anyone else is forcing you to download it, keithhazel. :)
May I suggest you either put up or shut up arguing about it with the OP. :)
The download is free, it comes with a registration key if you follow the instruction on site. I have had experience of using an earlier version on my PC, without any complaint regarding the Registry Mechanic software. :)
Thank you for the information, Savannah. I have taken your route and it's on here as I type. Much appreciated. :)

what do you mean..."put up or shut up".i have NEVER denied anything i have been told, but have been denied an answer to the question i put......apart from telling you how many errors you have, does it sort them out...is that a hard question ?

Yes it removes the problems found, the version that on offer is version 5.0, it is a past version of Registry Mechanic, think the new version is 5.2.
Now if you download the latest version it is a time limited demo and so you would have to pay for the program to remove the problems for you.
If it was a time limited demo I would not have posted Registry Mechanic as a Full Working Version
There are lots of freeware programs that I can recommend to you for cleaning and defragging the registry.
Your only commitment is an email address for registration......thats all.

If you download any "trial" version of software, you will find many will show problems, or suspected problems. You are then required to register with the software company, and pay for the software in order to use the "full" version to correct "all" of the defined problems.
Savannah2 made it perfectly clear in her OP that this was a full programme. The link takes you to a legitimate site to download it, and how to obtain a legitimate "Registration Name and Key".
For heaven's sake........
EDIT: Our posts crossed keithhazel.........

yes think they did, but it took from 11am till 11pm to formatt , reinstall xp, update with 61 updates for sp1...then all the virus protection, then the 2 hours for sp2 to install and update and then other bits that kept needing to be put back, this after a first installation that when i first went on line to get my virus protection on i was beaten to it and a pop up which came up 50-75 times an hour telling me i had 55 registery errors and needed to go to certain sites mentioned who incidently where "pay for sites"..so think i became a little over ansious...sorry for any raised temperatures....
It seems that keithhazel only believes what he sees.
That being the case, why don't you download the program, keithhazel (Sav has said that it is safe), and try it, instead of arguing about it. You won't be losing anything (apart from some pride) fgs!
Yes!, this is were an abundance of email addresses come in useful.:hihi:
I just set a new one up one one of our domains. Get the reg details then kill the account:thumbsup:
where you mentioned about "invalid page error" and i skipped to that and missed the point where i was up to....thank you.
It only happens on this particular PC. The other 6 here are fine with it. Which is a little strange:confused:

Happened with me a few minutes ago:D
update with 61 updates for sp1...then all the virus protection, then the 2 hours for sp2
Simply bypass SP1 and install SP2 (all SP1 fixes are reproduced in SP2).
Also, why not dl the network install distribution (that way there is no need to wait while windows updates via the net, you can do it locally)

A member of the IT, where I was working until recently, suggested I download SP2 and put it on a separate disk, so that, if I ever have to do another system recovery (this pc is originally SP1), all I have to do is install SP2 from the disk ~ saves a lot of time because it's just the installation and not the download. All that needs doing after that is to install the updates.
SP2 is downloadable from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en).

Follow this route next time for reinstalling XP.
1 (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1644585&postcount=7) 2 (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1650411&postcount=16) and then get your free copy of Drive Image (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1664294&postcount=1).....and yes it is a Full Working Version
If disaster strikes, and it does, usually once a week, I have my OS up and running in 4 minutes.

I shouldn't have been so "short" with you either keithhazel.
As for taking your computer "back-to basics," I did that myself 2 or 3 weeks ago......and I understand your reluctance to go through the "rigmarole" all over again so rapidly. I too am wary of downloading some programmes too because when the computer is "pristine" as such, it concentrates the mind somewhat. I took your route with XP and preloaded SP1, all the updates etc....a 12 hour job.......to be avoided at all costs.
So.....I too am now going to follow the routes recommended by Savannah and Ann* and get them on discs to save time and my own sanity.
Savannah2 05-11-2006, 17:01 Slipstream SP2 into your original copy of XP, then copy the new XP inc SP2 onto a blank CD.
Then use autopatcher for your XP updates....simplicity at its best.
How to slipstream the easyway (http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.shtml)
You can always do the same for you Office service packs. :)

Yup, everyone should do it to be honest - for the cost of a CD it saves a fair bit of time.
You'll also find that newer machines (specifically ones with PCI-Express cards and possibly others) need to have SP2 slipstreamed otherwise you'll get a STOP error when trying to install :)

Surely, any machine built in the past 18 months or so will have SP2 already, so slipstreaming shouldn't be needed.
Sav, my computer came with recovery disks, not the full XP installation disk. Is it possible to slipstream on to those disks and, if it is, which disk should it be slipstreamed on to ~ I have two; a first a second? Also bear in mind that the above installation is 266MB, so would there be enough room on a disk to slipstream? Also, how do you slipstream?
Considering how cheap disks are these days, it's not going to cost much to download SP2 onto one.

Probably not, you need the original Windows XP disc.
There is more infomation on slipstreaming here (http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp)
Last week a friend bought an HP computer with XP Home installed and all the kak they put on the computer, including the dreaded Real Player and Norton nearly 5 Gig in total.
I just did a clean install with my XP disk, time taken, including all MS updates 1hr 10mins.
So if you know anyone with an XP disk just ask them for a copy, as long as it's compatible with your COA you will be fine.....Will need to reactivate within 30days.
keithhazel 05-11-2006, 18:02 well i had a go, 3 times i have clicked on the link, it goes to the website then i click on the "download" link and it says under that big arrow...."downloading"
i wait 5 minutes , i get no other box that says downloading like the normal then i get the "cannot find server" white page, i re-booted and tried again but to no avail..i have got the password key ok....any suggestions please...typical it would be me...

Just downloaded from my original link, working fine.
If you are getting the *cannot find server* sound like your connection is timing out......keep trying, the file does exist.
Probably not, you need the original Windows XP disc.

Tried installing from a XP disk last year, but the licence key is preinstalled on to the pc (it's not the same key as is on the label), and at the time we couldn't access it.
I've been pretty lucky with this pc ~ the only stuff that installs when I do a recovery is some stuff to do with Comet and some AOHell stuff, all of which I just uninstall. No Norton, which is a godsend, so I don't have to worry about that.:D

Ann, I haven't tried this software, download a free full version of Drive Image and make an image of your hard drive at regular periods, if your OS bites the dust you can restore from the image.
I use Acronis, there was a free version of this available, but is proving hard to find due to popularity of the finest program on earth... :)

The first thing many people do with a new PC is to remove all the OEM crap and install an OS which they already have the installation media for.
New machine also includes home built systems and the like where again people are using old install media and not OEM recovery media.
keithhazel 05-11-2006, 22:04 You can download a free copy of Registry Mechanic 5.0 from here (http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2164197/registry-mechanic50)
To receive your free registration code for Registry Mechanic just enter your name and valid email address here (http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/free/promo/VNU0306)

Draggletail 05-11-2006, 23:27 yes thats useually the problem with free things, they tell you that you have loads of problems but want you then to sign up.......possibly the problems are not really problems either..
that does happen most of the time, but when Savvanah2 posts a recommendation you can be sure this is not the case :)
Don't know where she gets 'em from but she keeps coming up with them -
Check her sig BTW for a huge amount of genuine free software downloads
Savannah2 06-11-2006, 06:28 i wonder because when i go to play yahoo games the page with the games wont load up.
To play Yahoo games you need Java (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp) installed.
RiffRaff 06-11-2006, 10:32 Out of interest, I've been using v 5.0 since getting it free on some PC mag-or-other a few months ago : never had any problems, and regularly update it by clicking the 'Live Update' button....
Another excellent freebie to get is "HijackThis", a hijacker detector and remover....really clever stuff....
You can 'just' scan your HD, or you can log the result and post on to a forum for further advice/clarification....
