View Full Version : You use wool, its thin plactic tube with knitting needles on the end...
little-face 20-10-2006, 16:36 Hi,
My friend got me a ball of wool and this knitting needle thing that is platisc tubing with a needle on each end. I gathered that this makes some sort of woolen tubing or is used for broaches. She never told me how to use it (i dont even think she knew herself:loopy: haha) iv tried lookin for it on the tinterweb but i jus cant find out how to do it - please help!!!!!:help:
the wools been helplessly sat in my draw since May :(
Does the needle look something like this (http://www.flyingfingers.com/shop/images/medium/__notions__Skacel/addi_turbo_12in_08.jpg)? If so, it's a circular needle and it's used for knitting in the round. So yes, that means knitting tubes (like a sock, for example).
If that's what you mean, let me know and we can sort you out with some instructions about how to use it.
Welcome to the knitting group, by the way  .
little-face 20-10-2006, 16:52 thats the exact thing!!! thankyou yes i wud really like instructions on what and how to make sumthin with it

Right, first off, just need to make sure you can knit. Daft question, but just to be on the safe side :) .
Second, what sort of thing would you like to knit? Circular needles can be used to knit all sorts of things, though I wouldn't recommend starting out with a pair of socks. A hat would be a good start if you've never used circular needles before, as there won't be a great deal of shaping.
If you want to use the wool you already have, you'll need to tell me exactly what it is. Is it still wrapped in the ball band? Have a look on there and it'll tell you what the recommended needle size is.
Then, you'll need to tell me what size the circular needle is (it should say so somewhere on the needle itself). You need to use the correct needle size for the wool you have.
Once I've got all that, I'll have a look to see what patterns I can find.
I wouldn't start with a circular either- the only place I ever found them much use was in doing collars and welts for jumpers and the like. They're just not my thing- I'm much happier with DPNs other than that.
Welcome to the knitting group little-face.
I prefer DPNs too, though the first time I ever knit in the round was with a circular. I used it for a hat pattern, so I had to use DPNs at the very end to join the gap at the crown. A good intro to both types, really.

Well ive looked at the wool and it says '7 approx guide to kntting needle size' and the needle I have is 4.5mm. I do have other wool though but they dont have the bands on them ...

Could you tell me what wool it is? '7' is the old UK size for a 4.5 mm needle, so it could be that the needle and wool you have are perfect for eachother. Just need to double check though.
EDIT: Could you also tell me how much of it you have? How many balls?
little-face 20-10-2006, 17:18 well it says '7' by a picture of knitting needles - ther seems to be nothing else qritten on the band.
The wool, itself is thin but has big lumps of loosened wool in it - its all warm colours its really nice:)
Right, well as you say the wool is quite thin, then I reckon the 4.5mm needle will be fine.
So, what sort of thing do you fancy knitting?
How many balls of the wool do you have? Does it say anywhere on the ball band how much there is? It might say '100g' or something like that.

Hey well its only 50g, so probally something small - i dont really mind I'l leave it up to you
thanks for all the help - im looking forward to starting this now - the october half term doesnt look so glum anymore :hihi:
Right. I'll have a look and see what I can find. With 50g, it certainly will be small too :hihi: .
Give me a couple of days :) .
If anyone else has any ideas of what little-face can knit, post them here.
little-face 20-10-2006, 18:04 thankyou!!! i really appreciate it:thumbsup:
You dont need to use a circular needle to only do knitting in the round BTW. You can use them like standard needles to do straight knitting - i.e. when you get to the end of the row turn it over and do the other side (if you are doing stocking stitch knit across to the end then turn the work over and purl to the other end just like you would with straight needles). If you have enough wool could you make a scarf? Opps just noticed you only have 50g:D What about a mobile phone/ mp3 player cover?

Thanks for the suggestion though I think a scarf with 50g would only be suitable for my dog:hihi: though it could possiably be a thinner scarf like a neck thing. . . . hmm
LisaH's point is a good one. You can use the circular needle just as she described to knit a flat piece. Unless you really want to do some circular knitting, I'd suggest doing exactly what she says.
I like the idea of a skinny scarf, but I'm not too sure that you'd get one of a decent length out of 50g. It'd be a shame to start it then to find that you'd run out of wool while it's still too short.
I like the idea of a phone/mp3 player cosy. There's a pattern for one here (http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/ipod_cosy). It says to use two different colours, but you could just use the one you have.
You said that you had the ball band - whats the yarn BTW?
I found this Ipod cozy (http://www.iowachicksknitting.com/archives/000006.html) - not sure of the gauge but it gives you the idea or this one (http://www.iowachicksknitting.com/archives/000004.html)(but you will need to do something different to Icord unless you learn the magic loop technique :hihi: or this one (http://www.grumpyknitter.com/ipod/iPodcozy.pdf) looks the right gauge for what you have (nearly). If you like the idea there seems to be loads out there for IPods - you might need to change the size for your phone/ MP3 player.
little-face 30-10-2006, 16:03 oh wow!! iv only just notcied this thanx 4 finding somthing 4 me!!
actualy I wudnt mind making an MP3 player cosy as I plan to get one for christmas, it could be useful project from now till then becuase I dont want it too get all scratched. It would probaly be one of the cheap long round versions - but if anyones got any patterns I could work too that would be great :hihi:
