Hi people
I may have an opportunity for a council exchange coming up in an area of Sheffield called Thurgoland can anybody give me any info on this area.
Whats it like? (it is recommended or should be avoided)
Are the primary schools in the area any good?
Is their easy access to Sheffield city centre?
Are their many jobs available in the area?
When I checked out the postcode it said that the area came under the Barnsley local Authority but the property is in Sheffield why is that? or am I having a blonde moment and that is a stupid question.
Your comments would be very much appreciated.
Regards

Hi Joanne
Thurgoland is certainly an area not to be avoided.
It is a pretty area on the edge of the Penines and is on the edge of Sheffield in the Barnsley postcode on the main Huddersfield road.
Its next to a district called Wortley which is another nice place and close to Penistone and Oxspring which all have nice off road walks and horse riding paths or cycling if you prefer.
Regarding schools there is a school but its right on the main Sheffield/Huddersfield road and so a very busy road, though its next to the traffic lights and a speed camara is outside which always slows the trafffic down to 30 mph.
I,m not sure about any council houses there as it a private area with the odd scattering of farms.
Go and check it out and I think you will like it.

If you are moving to this area a good map to buy is Ordnance Survey Explorer 278 Sheffield & Barnsley it has an orange cover and is at a scale of 2.5 ins to the mile/4cm to 1km and are available from any good book shop which stock maps like W H Smiths and Waterstones.
Thurgoland is at grid ref 286012
It may be because it has Sheffield phone numbers and post codes. It is really a village of Barnsley. If you require a good bus service sorry but this area is pooly served route 29 two hourly to Sheffield during day and 23/24 23a/24a to Barnsley two hourly however they do operate at night and on Sundays
Hi
I used to live in Penistone which is about 3 or 4 miles from Thurgoland. If you like village life and being surrounded by countryside you should be fine. I don't know the council houses you mention but it is only a small village so it's unlikely to be a sprawling estate. I never saw any bad press about Thurgoland in the local newspaper (Barnsley Chron) in the ten years I lived nearby.
To answer your questions...
What's it like - see above
Schools - Local primary is small and is good (see link). Local secondary will be Penistone Grammar which is one of the top schools in the Barnsley area. Check websites for school results
http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/council/newslines/newsline1917.asp
Sheffield - About 10 miles away. Takes between 20 and 45 minutes by car, depending on time of day. Train station in Penistone but not good service to Sheffield. See previous post for bus info.
Jobs - Not much in Thurgoland village but nearby towns are Penistone and Stocksbridge and then there's Sheffield and Barnsley not too far away.
Location - About 10 miles from Sheffield and 5 miles from Barnsley. Rates are payable to Barnsley council.
Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for all your comments but as sods law has it the woman who wanted to do the exchange with me has now withdrawn her offer.
I am now definetly going to try and rent privately, which is scary as hell cos it means giving up my secure council house here in Dagenham.
Hope to find a place in Hunters Bar as I would like to send my son to Hunters Bar School as I've heard so many good things about it.
Wish me luck

Just as well......you wouldn't have liked the Thurgos anyway.
Hello Joanne
Thurgoland is a lovely village. It is close to the boundary between Barnsley/ Sheffield so that is why some things seem to belong to one or the other eg Postal address is Sheff , but local council is Barnsley. The council houses in Thugoland are on a small estate called Fir tree. It is a nice estate, many people have bought their council house and done improvements. As council houses they are very popular, and don't often come empty. If you have the chance of a move to here, I would grab it. Thurgoland is well
situated, in lovely countryside. Easy access to M1, Sheffield, Hudddersfield, Barnsley.
Sue.
Thurgoland is on the border of Sheffield and barnsley. You realy need a car to live there as it is about 10 miles+ from Sheffield centre. It is a nice area with a village atomsphere and semi rural. If you want to know about public transport call traveline on: 01709 515151. An amazing fact is that you can actualy swim in the river Don in thurgoland! in the City centre you would not dare for fear of getting swamp fever.
Hope this has been helpful

Thanks for your response guys, it has been very helpful.
I'm getting a good picture of certain areas of Sheffield now which is going to make choosing an area to move to alot easier.
Unfortunetly for me the house exchange to Thurgoland went belly up cos the woman with the bungalow withdrew her offer.
So its back to the drawing board for me now.

Joanne
