Been driving me potty this. There's a constant whooshing noise in our cold water pipes, even when nothing in the house is drawing water and I've checked the whole house for leaking pipes. Traced the noise back to the rising main, turned off the stopcock in the house and the water board stopcock as well but the noise is still there, only a little quieter. So it looks related to the mains water supply. Phoned up the water board and they reckon the mains water pressure could be very high in this area (Meadowhead/Woodseats) and that is causing noise to be transferred into our pipework. They're coming out to check it over. Just wondering has anybody else had a similar problem and if so was there any solution?

Only sometimes when I run the cold water tap in my bathroom sink it makes the loudest banging sound you can imagine. You can actually see the tap & sink juddering.
So if anyones got answers for I1L2T3, see if you can also come up with an answer for my problem please.
My mum had a similar problem.
It turned out that a valve was faulty !
Took 5 minutes and now peace and quiet at last !

Which of the 2 above problems is this for and what valve was faulty?
Thank you.

my mum and dad get this too
We had this and it took me 3 month to find out that we had a leak in the garden. The Council came and dug it up and fixed it.

Are your neighbours getting the same thing?
We had 'knocking pipes' and it turned out to be nothing to do with our house at all. It was down to the supply from YW. Everyone in the street was getting it.

Could be a leak. Got my wife's old stethoscope (she's in the medical profession) tonight and listened to the pipe on the other side of the water board stopcock and there is whooshing gurgling and banging noises in there. When I turn the stopcock on the the whooshing noises are transferred into our pipes and seemingly amplified. Very strange.
All fixed now. Turned out to be a burst water supply pipe in the street. The noise kept getting louder until our cellar and the cellars of the three neigbouring houses started to fill with water. Yorkshire Water were round with diggers within an hour when that started. If anybody has this kind of problem it's pretty nailed on there's a leaking water pipe - get it fixed in case it floods you out.
