Following the debate on the convicted rapist who has just won the lottery do you now do the lottery and will you in the future?

See this link: Rapist wins 7 million on Lotto (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15241)

I'm of the opinion that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at maths.

Having said that I still buy a ticket. I'm good at maths just incredibly stupid! :loopy:

Somebody's got to win it tho, don't see why it can't be me

I don't. I've got a deal on with my mates at the mo. they're getting a ticket every week and i'm saving a pound every week. at the end of the year we'll drink the money that we've made away.

Somehow i think it'll only be me getting completely muntered!

I do and still will despite the other thread.
It's not camelots fault that this guy won, even they don't like tht he's won it.

I only play lucky dips every now and then tho!

I used to play the lottery and then I heard where the money was going to, that was it then for me.

In the last ten years I've been better off by £520 due to the lottery. Didn't buy any tickets, so saved .......£520!!

If that's the case (and I can well believe that it is) ... you can bet your bottom dollar that the only reason they're unhappy he won it is that it's bad for business.

I purchased lotter tickets about 3 times every ... I don't play it at all now.

I have never bought a ticket and the fact that a convicted rapist has won 7 million isn't likely to make me start buying them!

I do play the lottery - just in case my numbers ever do come up.

There are some good causes that I do agree with and some that I dont, but they can't please everybody.

as for the convict thing. Its a difficult one.
In general people are allowed out on day release as part of their rehabilitation and joining in with everyday tasks is part of this. Going to the shops and buying a lottery ticket is part of our culture and therefore could be argued part of rehabilitation.

Once properly released, people are considered to have served their time and have a fresh start, so again difficult to then exclude such people from buying tickets.

In this recent case, there are emotions attached to his particular crime that make this more appalling, and also the fact that he received two separate sentances of 18 years and life which makes it equally galling that he is out on day release at all.

But emtional response about one guy should not evoke a knee jerk reaction against all....

In the case of this one guy, I personally don't think he deserves the money and would hope that he is rehabilitated enough to think about giving away some/all of this money to rape charities and victim support groups. But legally, he is entitled to it and I don;t think the law should be changed.

Does anyone really think that people will stop doing the lottery because it has only just occured to them that someone they consider unworthy of winning a large sum of money may win it?

Maybe it isn't "Fair" that a convicted rapist has won so much money, but since when has the lottery been "fair" in those terms?
And would there be such a big fuss if he had been released 30 years ago for example?

I personally don't do the lottery because I'd rather keep the pound in my pocket than gamble it on a ridiculously long odds bet.

Okay if I won a million it would transform my life, but I'd rather concentrate on enjoying my life as it is rather than daydream about what might be but very probably wont be!

I originally started this poll because one or two people on the rapist thread had indicated that they would stop buying tickets. Obviously they've changed their minds. You're right though, if the idea that their money was going to go to fund opera or tennis clubs was not enough to stop people playing the lottery then the fact that one criminal won £7m won't either.

I wonder if anyone would have made all this fuss if Jeffrey Archer had won the lottery while on prison leave.

I havent bought a lottery ticket for years, I have no plans to either, if I started I would worry that I would have to put it on twice a week, or I would worry that my numbers would come up when I didnt put it on..... that would be £2 a week x 52 weeks = £104, thats a few nights out ;)

i don't play the lottory because there is a 1 in 13983816 chance of winning the jackpot.

I understand why people play, its because paying a couple of pounds a week to have a possibility that dreams come true is well worth it.

I hate the arguement of money can't buy you happiness blah blah blah blah.

I stopped palying the lottery years ago.

A tax on stupidity.

Instead I buy premium bonds & now have £15,000.

Which is still MY money - not Camelots, and I win approximately £100 a month.
