Which were your favourite acts at the Mojo ? I liked a lot of acts that I saw there e.g Georgie Fame,Geno Washington,Alan Bown Set,Graham Bond,Zoot Moneyand lots more!My favourite singer from that time though and his voice was just unbelievable was Billy [Fay Boy] Stewart ! What a waste of talent to have died so young ! Can anyone remember groups like Amboy Dukes ,Love and Confusion ? They say that if you lived through the Sixties ,you find it hard to remember them!I just know it was such an exciting era with something new happening every week!

You lucky soul - I would have loved to have got to the
Mojo but I was too young.
I attended "Down Broadway" but was told it just did not compare.

I remember my parents considered the Mojo to be a den of sin !!!!

But I used to hang on to every word of the older brothers and sisters of my mates who went to the club as they described the sounds and the live artists they saw there.

I am a big Small Faces fan - did they ever perform at the Mojo ?

I was introduced to blues music at the Mojo and remember seeing John Lee Hooker there - brilliant! I think Peter Stringfellow chose the name for the club from a JLH song "I got my mojo working"
I made one of those mojo dolls that used to hang at the back of the stage, it was free entry on opening night if you brought one. Can't recall seeing the Faces.

Rod stewart was also there as part of Shotgun Express ,which included Long John Baldry ! I remember one particular show featuring The Graham Bond Organization where they all walked of that small stage and just left Ginger Baker.I can still remember the hairs standing on the back of my neck, whilst i was listening to his drumming on his own ,it seemed to go on forever before the rest sauntered back one at a time and picked up the tune .
Can anyone remember a soul group called the Vibrations that appeared there? They each weighed about 25 stone each but boy could they dance and sing!
Another good night was The Ike and Tina Turner All-nighter,thank goodness there was abomb scare at about one-o-clock and everybody could go outside and get some fresh air !It used to be great walking out at 7-o-clock inthe morning ,walk down to the bowling alley and just chill out there until you were fit to go home!!!

ahem.... not John Lee Hooker, but the great Muddy Waters, who also wrote the song. Just about everyone's covered it since Muddy first recorded it back in the 50s (except John Lee Hooker, funnily enough).

I must have lived at the Mojo Club as I can remember all the acts everyone has mentioned (well almost). What about Chris Farlowe? The small faces did play there from memory but I can't remember if they were the Faces or Small Faces & of course we had the Who on many occasions also Spencer Davies remember them? (Keep on running).
What a club what an era. Like no other hey for those of us that were there. Well lets face it we are still talking about the Mojo Club & the Stringfellow bros: 40 years after it all happened.

The Stringfellows didn't do badly from the mojo did they? What happened to them....lol. I think one went down to London to open some sort of similair club ( tongue firmly in cheek) but what happened to the other (David I think)? Perhaps he got a "proper" job.

It was the Small Faces. The Faces didn't exist until 1970, by which time the Mojo club was long gone. In fact, the Small Faces played their first ever gig at the Mojo. See this site for more details: http://www.makingtime.co.uk/rfr/story3.htm

Funnily enough, I've just read Pete Stringfellow's autobiography "King Of Clubs". Once you get past his giant ego, it's a cracking read. I do think they should have employed a decent proof reader though. There are so many spelling errors in there. (eg Rivelin is spelt "Rivilin"). Unforgivable really, when you consider he's actually from Sheffield.

Thanks for the Small Faces info.

I did get to see them in Sheffield in the late sixties at
the Top Rank Suite. It was a short set but good stuff.

Would have loved to see them at City Hall.

I also read Pete Stringfellows autobiography a few years ago & yes it should have had a good proof reader. I personally think the Stringfellows were the best think that ever happened to Sheffield kids in the 60's. The brothers were Pete Geoff Paul & Terry. From reading Pet's book I think Geoff who was a lot more reserved than Pete had in later years quite a problem with drink which is quite sad as I always found him to be a nice guy.I hope he survived the ordeal. Often wonder what happened to Paul who worked in the coffee bar at the club & Terry was only a little fella during all that era.
I don't know if many of you would remember the nights Pete & Geoff used to get up on stage & sing together, I always thought it was great to see them together, but Geoff always had to be coaxed. I just thought Pete had so much charisma he could do anything I really loved the guy. I believe he is still clubbing & just being Pete somewhere in London.

They also did the Black Cat club at St Aidens church hall on city road, but it was never as good as the mojo.

Well done Geoffrey old friend.Your memory hasn't let you down although it was packet not package.I remember you going berserk at school after seeing Pete Townsend play there with the Who.You wouldn't shut up about him.Of all the regulars who played there John Mayall's Bluesbreakers were my favourites, and of the ones who occasionally played there I liked Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames.Of the one offs it had to be Hendrix.

Hi Glyn
Yes I do remember seeing the Who. Maybe it was all those pop art posters we made in art class. I also remember a band called MR. SMITH AND THE SOMEPEOPLE or something like that. They were not a bad group if not a little strange - as their name suggests. Anybody else see them?

I used to go to the Mojo all the time. Memory fails as to how many bands I've seen but as well as all the local bands I remember Spencer Davis with Stevie Winwood. he was only 17 at the time but just as gorgeous then as now. There used to be 2 or 3 rows of bench seats at the front which my friend and I always used to make for. It was easier to catch the artists eye that way. Does my memory serve me well I am sure we used to drink orangillo. As for the den of sin, well it passed me by

Sorry to "Burst Your Bubble" GEDDIT, but this is a bit of an urban myth. The Small Faces had been playing gigs for a while without real success but one night in Sheffield they played at a working mens club near the Midland station/Queens Road area and got thrown out without finishing the set. The band were on the verge of quitting the business but saw mods queuing to get into the ESQUIRE CLUB, spoke to the manager and played a set that night.
The rest is history.
Fourth member at that time was Jimmy Winstone who was replaced by Ian McLagen a few weeks later when Don Arden took over the management.

No alcoholic bar at the Mojo so no problems for anyone. I was 15 when first went and saw the Move smash the stage up. Life changing experience when I realised that rock was more exciting than soul.

The original post asked about best bands we had seen, obviously everyone goes for Hendrix, Floyd or one of the names that later became huge but at the time everyones favourites were the Small Faces and Alan Bown Set.

Something that always struck me was the live sets for the "pop" bands were SO different to their hit records. Usually much heavier, blusier and true R & B, not the crap you hear today.

Most memorable night was Procul Harum just as " Whiter Shade of Pale" had entered the charts. Nobody was allowed in unless they had a flower. The park opposite was demolished in the rush.

Hi Tony,

No, must have been a different crowd. I know a Tony Morton from school but he is a teacher in Sheffield.
I went to school in Pitsmoor and hung out at Lane Top and Firth Park Bowl.
Someone mentioned Plug and his odd scooter. Think he must have changed it cos I knew him when he had a Vespa.

I have tried to get Stringfellow to go along to the Small Faces convention held every September, seeing as he knew the band so well but must be a different scene for him now. Don't think he was ever that interested in the music, just money...and of course the women.

Definitely the Move, Christmas '66. "Night of Fear" had just been released and they filled the stage with old TV's which received the hammer and guitar treatment.

Saw the Nice late '67 at City Hall supporting The Move/Hendrix etc. That gig is well documented elsewhere so won't go into detail here.

I went to the Mojo just once to see a Hamburg group, The Rattles which I had already seen at the Esquire. This was about the time that the Beatles had been to Hamburg. I was scared of the Pitsmoor area (comments from my parents) and didn't stay late.

Hi Geoff I remember seeing the Steam Packet, not at the Mojo but at the Esquire. You are right about the three rows of benches. A few of us from school went to see The Hollies and queued up from early afternoon so that we could get to the front. We even took a picnic with us to keep us going. When the Mojo was about to open a long queue had formed and someone came out to tell us that The Hollies had broken down in their van. There was a delay for about an hour but when the doors were eventually opened we ran to the front for the benches. When The Hollies came on stage there was a surge to the front and the benches were pushed foreward. I fell to the floor and Alan Clarke picked me up. I was in 7th heaven! Those were the days.
Are you coming over later this year? I read on the Owler Lane thread that Glyn will be here in July/Aug. I am off to France for 5 weeks and won't be back until the 8th Aug. Hope to see you soon.

I think it took Alan Clarke some time to recover as well Moe. I also remember that Lorraine passed out at the Georgie Fame show as well. What a hardy lot you Owler Lane lasses were!
I hope to be back some time this year. Like an idiot, I have set up another company here which obviously takes all my time and has put me under so much pressure. At my age I should know better. I will stay in touch however with you all. I don't know where Phil's gone, maybe he's still in the dressing room?
Speak soon, Geoff

Hi, in the mid sixties my late husband used to manage a group called Mort Draygon and the Diamonds, they used to play at the Mojo at least one Saturday per month as a support group. Bernard used to drop the lads off at the Mojo and then we would go back to Pete Stringfellows house until we either came home to Halifax if they were playing very late, or we'd go down to the Mojo with Pete and collect the lads, does anyone remember the group, there were 5 of them. I remember one night Long John Baldry was playing there when they were playing, I can't really remember anyone else, (old age). Bernards son was the bass player in the group, sadly he was killed in a car crash in 1971. Would love to hear if anyone remembers.
