View Full Version : Our Sheffield market
RunningFree 25-06-2003, 22:13 Our sheffield market is a discrace now! It is full of Alco's and smack heads.
And i have heard they are thinking about spending millions in doing it up. What a waste of our money!
I have been to doncaster market and that is very nice, very clean. The people are goons in that town but is looks good. Unlike our sheffield market.
What do you think ?[B]
I am a market trader and there are no really good markets around here compared to down south. Donnington is not bad, Doncaster is ok but a cheap market for cheap people so doesn't attract really top traders. Sheffield is beyond dire.
A lot of Market Traders from South Yorkshire/Manchester travel south to trade - sad but true.
I agree from a traders point of view there is much more to be earned in Markets in the south. I prefer Chesterfield Market to Sheffield.
Hi,
I am new to the area and have been looking for local markets so am interested in the comments made. Is this the Castle Markets you are all saying are not great?
Also where are the Chesterfield markets held and does anyone have a contact?
Thanks
Belinda

Nothing wrong with the Castle market in Sheffield, the traders are friendly, class one food, the prices are right, if someone says it is full of smackheads, that is nothing to do with the market, it is the people who frequent it!!!
Moon Maiden 02-07-2003, 16:12 Being brought up in Barnsley with loads of markets - I have to say I was sickenly disspointed with Sheffield. I used to spend all day trawling the markets for good food and bargins - even on income support I was able to give my family fresh vegetables without having my arms and legs ripped off in the process - or sufffering food poisoning.
Perhaps my expectations were too high but the place is dirty, it smells disgusting and the food is crap quality. I don't care how flippin cheap it is I wouldn't touch it with someone elses barge pole.
Barnsley meat & Fish market used to have the same problem with smells and dirt when I was younger but the council cleaned it up. I understand now that the markets in Barnsley are on the decline too.
I mis the opportunity to buy fresh products. I don't drive and the local farmers used to come into Barnsley at least once a week and sell fresh eggs, and farm produce.
Hillsborough offers a good range of the supermarket and fresh stuff - there is even a fishmongers which is a HUGE novelty.
So my opinion on the Markets - they need a good steam clean and then I may consider buying.

PaulTansley 02-07-2003, 20:09 I have heard its due to follow the Sheaf Market and be demolished, best thing i,d say.
costessey 02-07-2003, 22:17 its perfect for the lower orders who use it...also good entertainment on occasion....norwich has a good market...bit like chesterfield but bigger and 6 days/week
bassman-x 15-07-2003, 22:54 the markets down the moor are somewhat better, the fruit and veg is pretty good, but they are an eyesore, as is the rest of the Moor. The whole of the Moor should be knocked down and re-generated and a new market area should be developed that is properly run and has decent markets.
Top of list of areas to raze to the ground has to be castle market area, it's the pits!
alchresearch 17-07-2003, 12:17 Crystal Peaks Market is pretty clean.
Perhaps markets are just one of those things which won't prosper in the 21st century?

I heard that too. I think they are planning to build a new market somewhere near the top of the Moor.
Or at least that was the last thing I heard about it anyway
onest_bob 17-01-2005, 16:27 Does anyone know about the cost of standing on these markets i am especialy interested in thorsbey market
I like Castle Market, the bulding needs renovating, and the council needs to think of ways to tackle the amount of undesirables there..
but overall, it's good. I like seeing all the different things on offer, and a lot of the stuff is very fresh. If it isn't- just don't buy it. It's good to go and see, and mix with people of all cultures! Theres aslo a lot of stuff you just can't get in a supermarket...
I do agree that it has become really dirty recently. When I was younger it seemed much cleaner and more thought out. Now, if you come down one of the staircases into the meat/fish market, you are presented with hanging pigs carcasses and blood all over the floor...it doesn't seem very hygenic at all.
I like the market, I would rather buy fish and meat there than in a supermarket, I like to see the butcher and tell him (or her) what I want, not just get a thin scrag-end slice in a polystyrene tray.
Having said that, paddling through blood and sawdust can be a bit off-putting sometimes, especially if you have a bit of hangover.
It does need a clean-up, perhaps a new building all together, but I think there will always be demand for it.
