Has anyone ever been on a cruise ship? can they tell me please, what is it like to be cooped up on a ship ,day after day and what about sleeping in an indoor cabin? does it give one claustrophobia having to sleep in a confined space each night?

We are considering having a 14 day break on one, but I am not sure I would like it. Perhaps someone would relate their own experience to give me some idea of what to expect.

You can spend most of the day on deck if that is better for you, but you should not feel couped up as they are very spacey.
Its better than a plane and if you are claustaphobic the cabins are small but have a window so have a few whiskys before you enter the room, that will give you dutch courage and you will sleep all night to.

14 days should be OK. I did 6 weeks for crimes unmentionable. In the 70s, flights from NZ were extremely expensive and liners were the only affordable form of transport.

We drank a lot, saw a lot of exotic places, danced to the same 10 Santana titles that the band knew, drank a lot, ate some dreadful food, drank a lot (we were coming from the antipodes), had 5, yes 5, people die between Auckland and Malta and read books until our eyes went all squinty.

Did I mention the drinking?

Oh yes, I met my partner on the boat in the middle of the Pacific and we've been together 29 years.

Yeah, it's OK.

I was amazed to read in a daily newspaper that the daughter of a family on a cruise ship disappeared during the voyage and was never seen again after visiting a foreign port.

When the foreign police were called, they shrugged their shoulders as if to say what can we do, apparently, this has happened before on cruise ships and the person is never seen again.

One theory is that young girls are abducted by gangs who supply the worldwide trade in prostitution and they are kept prisoner in distant countries and just used to make big money.

Take a trip on the British cruise ship Aurora.

Mind you the foods not up to much, apparently!

And don't expect a refund if your not satisfied. ;)

Bunch of wimps on that ship. See my post above, of the 5 people who died 3 were struck dead by a virus. A lot of us contracted it but just put it down to hangovers. I find it quite amusing the fuss these people are making considering no-one died.

The other deaths, if anyone's still reading this, were one elderly lady falling downstairs after someone let off a firecracker and a friend of ours who fell off some scaffolding in Malaga.

I don't know to be honest Max. I did see the managing director been interviewed live on national news and he developed a politicians natural ability to dodge questions when asked point blank about possible refunds/compensation.

IMO refunds or compensation would be a bit ott. They only had the runs for a few days. What else is there to do on a cruise ship except sit around?

I'm sure there might be lots to do on that particular ship. From what I can gather most of them were laid up in bed for days. Again I don't know the details of the journey but was that particular cruise due to dock anywhere on route and did it take it's intended journey?

I went on a cruise with my family. I was duped into going whilst recovering from depression. After suffering the humiliation of standing with a square lifebelt round my head for an hour, with the whole ship looking suspiciously like an army of Spongebob Squarepants, I learnt that the ship was full of families and old people.

The first stop we made at Gibraltar I think. my parents fell out over how we should be having fun and I decided then and there never to leave the ship again till we got home. The best parts of the trip were when everyone was gone off looking about and I had the ship to myself to sunbathe and rade, and the towel swans the maid folded for me and my sister, after probably mistaking the contents of our suitcases for those of children...

I've been on a few cruises as both passenger and staff. It depends what the itinery is and how many sea days there are. How big is the ship and how many of you are going to be in one cabin. There's a lot of variables to be considered.

go for it. more expensive ones are mostly better, just check how many days at sea as against ports of call. plenty of nice ships to choose from. royal caribbean are good.
you only sleep in the cabin.
