View Full Version : Awful Radio Traffic Reports
Has anyone heard the awful traffic reports on Radio Sheffield.
The guy doesn't have a clue what's happening.
He mentions some places called Durka and Flushdyke every
morning.
Frankly I don't believe these places exist -except in South
Africa.
Then he comes out with the amazing news that traffic is
getting busier as the rush hour approaches.
And to cap it all he asks listeners to ring in if they spot a
hold-up!These folk are called Jammy Dodgers.
Somebody at the radio station should be told that it's us that
want to know the score -NOT provide it.
If this kind of programming continues then you'll switch on
the News and see a man pleading with us to send him some news.
alchresearch 25-06-2003, 21:45 Radio 2 does the same thing and asks people to phone in with traffic blackspots but that works very well and has got me out of many a traffic nightmare.

I laughed so loud that I woke up my son.
thanks.
hallam fm and radio 5 live are good for traffic and travel......:D
Flushdyke and Durka are real places and they are a traffic hotspot on the MI North near Leeds, I am not sure if this is the right spelling.
I think this method of gaining feedback from listeners is quite effective. It is more real time, I have often heard reports from AA etc stating long tailbacks on Hi - one O etc, only to drive down it and it be clear.
Power to the people - thats what I say
Yes, I'm also surprised as to why anyone would take offence to this . The two places mentioned are junctions 39 and 40 of the M1. Obviously very relevant to people fom our area, as lots of them drive that way. And as for asking people to call in, well imagine that. Err, doesn't every radio station do that?
What next, asking for dedications???
Knob.
Thanks Mikey and Fuzzy. As a frequent user of the M1 I still have
doubts about the existence of Flushdyke and Durka.
They sound to me like an old vaudeville act trying to make a comeback.Perhaps a comedy duo in the tradition of that hilarious
Scottish couple -the Krankies.
I do concede that the UK Gazeteer lists a village between
Flush House and Fockerby called Flush Dyke but as its
map location indicates a dismantled railway and sewage works
it hardly deserves a mention on the Yorkshire Tourist Trail.
As for Durka no-one has yet identified it.Informed sources
believe it may be the hideaway of Lord Lucan,Shergar -and some
weapons of mass destruction.
Happy motoring.
PaulTansley 27-06-2003, 20:56 That as gave me an idea, I phone Radio Sheffield or Hallam or both and ask them to avoid the Parkway at all costs as its blocked from Catcliffe to Park square roundabout and presto, i leave home and get it all to myself.
Great thinking Cycleracer.
And I thought all cyclists were sweaty-crotched Sturmy Archers.
Let's bombard the radio with phoney holdups so that commuters are zigzagging from here to Flushdyke.
PaulTansley 27-06-2003, 21:17 Sweaty maybe, Sturmey Archers i think Hal might be in that group.:D I await Hals response.
Do u use Sturmeys Hal.
seanovshef12 22-05-2011, 11:02 Radio Sheffield ins't that good for traffic reports. Get Hallam Fm on for the best traffic reports ;)

It isn't any help to the people ringing through who are stuck in it becasue they didn't know to avoid the area though, does it?
Just wondering why people are commenting on a post from 2003?? Its only 8 years ago!!!!
Radio sheffield is very bad for traffic reports the presenters have little or no knowledge of the local area , and when it gets to public transport its a joke.
The numb er of times they report "Doncaster Station is Closed" when the only problem is Sheffield to Hull/ Scunthorpe services they totaly ignore East Coast Services .
Sorry but if this is the standard of local BBC radio then its time to give up.
And before any one asks yes I have brought it to thier attention .

.
I have never heard anyone report that "Doncaster Station is closed".
Apart from that, it must be a real problem for you.
I'm sure that they just read out the same generic report every evening.
"Park Square and Brook Hill roundabouts are busy".
No, really?!
I once rang in to report a problem on Whitham Road. The bloke on the phone said "Is that in Hull?" No I said, Sheffield. "Oh he said, there's a Whitham Road in Hull."
Well, there may be, but why would I be ringing Radio Sheffield to report a problem in Hull? And why did someone working for Radio Sheffield know there was a Whitham Road in Hull but not in Sheffield?
I've not really trusted their road reports since.

I've often thought the same thing!

The problem is not so much this; but, rather, that most traffic news is sourced in Leeds [boo!]. If you telephone BBC Radio Sheffield's traffic reports line on 0114-256 1212, it's often a Leodensian who answers; and, yes, I used that word because it contains 'dense'!

The doncaster station was an example which as occured often recently due to cable thefts but we are forever getting roads mixed and in inacurate information regarding locations.
Or we get a bridge strike report but they dont seem to have worked out that trains could be affected !

As you are unfortunate enough to live in West Yorkshire [boo!], rather than South Yorkshire [cheers!], we'll forgive your ignorance.

If you've been driving up and down the M1 for years, pull in at the next services and take a break.
It's dangerous to drive if over-tired.
Taximark 24-05-2011, 23:14 Totally agree with OP, he sounds useless, always 90% inaccurate and only uses the CCTV cams around Sheffield for info, they (RS) say phone in but when i did once to report a major hold up due to road works his reply was on the lines of, we can only broadcast holdups if it's verified by police or council!! wtf? don't ask people to phone it then!
Oh and is audio on the radio is usually irritatingly quiet.
