I have an acer aspire 3610 laptop. I've had it for four months. Yesterday I couldn't get my pointer to move using the touchpad. I have reformatted the machine to it's factory settings and tried the fn/f7 combination yet the pointer still remains in teh middle of the screen. This is making simple tasks really dificult as I am used to using a mouse.

Can someone help??? I've just started at college and I have some work due in that i cannot do thanks to this damn pc!

It's entirely possible to use a PC without a mouse.

If you can't, then have you tried pluggin in a USB mouse and using that. .

I, more or less, ALWAYS use a USB mouse for my Laptop, its a lot easier.

What do you mean? Not help myself?

I agree that I hated using the touchpad but very quickly got used to it.

I dont want to buy a usb mouse when I should be able to use my touchpad. I dont expect things to balls up after only four months!!

I should have really quoted yer post as above, as I meant that instead of lookin for yerself on how much they cost, yer simply asked and was happy to wait until bein told.

The usb jossle on laptops, as far as im aware are pretty much operational or knackered, so if it has stopped workin, I don't think any driver or OS mods would help.

I aint looked around cos I dont want one! I want my laptop to work as it should!

If it's my only option then fair enough. Do you reckon I'll be covered with my guarantee? Should be. Shouldn't I???

Speak to those who sold it to you and get them to fix it.

check in the device manager for broken or unrecognised devices, you are probably just missing the driver for the touchpad

it's most likely a Synaptics device and you can find generic drivers here (http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm) but I would recommend going to the PC manufacturers site and getting the driver they tweaked for the PC (even though they probably just used the generic one themselves)

errr, where is the device manager. is that the same as te control panel?

ok go to the control panel

if its in classic view double click "system"

if it's in category view click "performance and maintenance" then click "system"

once the system applet starts click the "hardware" tab then "device manager"

any disabled or faulty devices will have a red cross on them any unrecognised ones will have a yellow exclamation mark and the description may not match exactly what you think it is

it'll be under "mice and pointing devices" and if it's faulty it'll have a red cross on it

not 100% sure where it'll show up or even if it shows up at all if the driver isn't loaded

basically if you can't see it or it's got a yellow exclamation mark on it you need the driver as it isn't normally part of XP

If you bought it under 4 months, it should still be under warranty. So find out whether there is a manufacturer's helpline, ring someone up and ask.

I think for the branded laptops, anything wrong with it, you need to contact the brand's actual helplines to find the cause. Cos they are the manufacturer of the laptop. The shop that sold it to you will still encourage you to ring the manufacturer. Some shops may ring on your behalf and fix it for you. e.g. Cole Brothers.

As far as I know, most laptops have 1 year manufacturer's warranty unless I'm mistaken.
