View Full Version : What's happening with the Rutland Arms?

I went in there on Wednesday night and they ran out of beer... I don't mean just the real ales, I mean all the draft beer and lager :o All that were left were bottles.

I remember it being a really fine pub - listed by CAMRA and all that. It seems to be rapidly going downhill....I half expect it to be boarded up the next time I pass.

Is it due to close? :(

I'd be interested in an answer to this, too. Used to be about my favourite city centre pub (apart from the smoke), with the best pint of Timothy Taylor I've tasted, but it does seem to have been getting a bit sad recently. Hope it's not being readied for redevelopment - as it's an attractive oldish building, I suppose it wouldn't fit in well with the new Sheaf Square ...

This happened once when we went down over the summer too under similar circumstances - England match on early evening + nice weather to enjoy the beer garden.

anyone know what's happening with the rutland arms again? Was bought by Plug guys last year who resolved to keep it as a traditional boozer. They even started doing nice food again and all seemed well. But now there is a Pub To Let sign outside it- whats going on? Please dont let it be purchased by some faceless company to create yet another city centre s****y bar! We need real boozers in town and this is one of the best!!!

I agree Caretta - but I don't know what's happened.

(By the way, I wonder if nearly 15 months is a record between posts on the same thread?)

It is soon to become a tee-total pub.

I think the Rutland is alright - but one of the best things about it - the lovely summertime garden - has been ruined by a huge hi-rise built next door which is going to knock out all the light and make it a sunless place which is a real shame.

The lease is once again up for sale.

Yeah, whatever happened to the regular food? I was in there early one Sunday afternoon for a business meeting with someone else, and was hoping to have lunch; the standard excuse was that 'the kitchen was being refurbished/worked on'.

All seemed so promising as well............

Wonder why forum user Green hasn't been on this thread yet?

*pops head up*

After a year of trying to negotiate a lease with Punch, whilst in effect "tenants", alas, it hasnt worked. There were several terms within the lease that we couldnt possibly sign up to, and as Punch refused to budge, & the legal bills became bigger, we eventually had to face upto walking away.

Its with an extremely sad heart, that we have handed in our 6 months notice, but we just now have to walk away. Punch are in the interim looking for a new landlord, so by all means if someone feels they are up to it, go hither.

completely devastated.....adele n scottie. :( :( :(

Nooooooo!!! that is really bad ....what were punch trying to make you do? can we campaign against them as regulars and state that all of YAS and ciq will boycot the pub if they make it ****?

green

The main concern is the structural problems with the building, and Punch wish to pass the cost of these problems onto the tenant.

I cant see any campaign working unfortunately. :(

Hope so. Me and White Rose love the Rutty. Whilst the Plug held the lease and Tim managed it (by day at least) it was better than it's ever been, and it was sad it closed. Bloody Punch Taverns. Bloody Pubcos, all of 'em!

It'll be coining it in when Hallam Uni's new building opens next door.

Went past last night about 5.30pm and it appeared to have reopened. Well, the door was open and the fruit machine was on at the very least.

Can anyone confirm?

When I see all the pubs that have 'For Lease' signs up above their doors, I can't help but think that Enterprise, Punch and the other faceless pub companies are slowly squeezing landlord (or lady) after landlord of everything they have. Do they really want large parts of their estate out of business?

their business plan does seem to be "squeeze the tenant for all they're worth, there'll be another sucker along soon after we've bled this one dry"

i cant understand why anybody would want to run a tied pub. the beer only comes in barrels so they can get you over it :loopy:

Was really happy to see it had reopened last year and have always supported this pub.
However myself and my 2 friends went in one night and were treated not very well (previous thread), although I was responded to on here by the landlord (the people from the plug) it was'nt enough for me to go in again, shame really as I work nearby and no one from our organisation goes in now.
Thats the danger of having very rude staff and the owners/managers not really doing anything about it.....will be a shame to see it go.......but

I guess I like going to pubs and relaxing with my friends, spending my money somewhere I am treated in a civil way.
What I am not going to do is take a risk and be treated how I was. No chance.
We are lucky in Sheffield to have some cracking boozers, red lion, bath hotel, dog & partridge etc so all of the above and others have been and will continue to get my custom but not the rutland.
I wish the new owners well however.

It's been open again for at least a week; a very nice lady runs it, and it is much the same as before, including a selection of real ales on offer: there were only two when I popped in, but the landlady promised that more would be on tap soon.

i will have to pop in with beer matters tomorrow and say hello!

On the subject of only 2 real ales, real ale is a fresh product with a short shelf life, so until trade builds back up that is a very sensible policy to ensure quality.

i see the rutland is reopened by a very nice landlady, they have 2 real ales on at moment but as they have only opened she has said they will be building up to more as they need it to stay fresh until trade picks up.... so everyone get in and buy beer so they can get more ale on. she is also hoping to put on a good food lunch menu as soon as she has kitchen up and running hopefully next month, this should be good as we have no where else to go on our lunch breaks.

I'll echo that comment, everyone go and support the pub, it deserves it.

Those walls are looking bare without any pictures or nic-nacs though...

I find the fact for the sake of one pint and seeing how the new owners are, you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Since you are so close at work, im sure you and a few colleagues could nip in on your way to the red lion just to see.

I tried the RA one lunchtime recently. It was virtually empty, but the Hobgoblin bitter was quite tasty and the soup was fine & came with fresh bread.

Punch who own it are in serious financial trouble, their shares are currently 36p and i cant see how they are going to climb out of the ****e they put themselves in. With a bit of luck the Rutland Arms will go up for sale and someone will get the freehold without any silly alcohol or rental ties, and some serious investment can be put into the building. Its one of Sheffield's best pubs and just needs a lot of TLC and no frickin Pubco owning it.

Some of the Sheffield Hallam Uni staff might chip in!

We've been in there a couple of evenings in the past few weeks and, whilst it's nowhere near as busy as it used to be 2-3 years ago, there were enough people in to give it a decent atmosphere. A nice selection of 6 real ales as well, though sadly I think they can only get ones on the Punch Tavern list so no local ales.

Punch shares are in the 38p now and Enterprise 39p.....its a matter of weeks/months before they are both gone. Maybe then landlords/ladies can get their pubs without ridiculous ties that have killed this industry.
