PopT 16-09-2004, 19:27 Many years ago I had to do some training at Ickles works in Templeborough. I noticed the loading bay surround was the exact level as the large lorries that backed in for loading. The drivers could walk on and off the back off their lorry backs easily. I remarked to one of the old hands how handy this was. He replied, Oh! It's nothing to do with the lorries, it was built like that so that Lizzie could back into the bay and the steel bars could be easily unloaded from the specially built cart that the Elephant pulled'. Happy Days! peterw 16-02-2006, 21:00 Unless there were two such elephants in Sheffield your ‘Lizzy’ was actually called Daisy and (I think, not sure) was owned by Thomas W. Toesy 11-08-2010, 16:27 Hi there, the elephant story is a fascinating one. Does anyone know about the travelling circus Lizzie Ward Came from? Sophie mikebatty 10-08-2011, 16:10 I don't think I am wrong , but wasn't lizzy used to pull a decommissioned tram car into wards on Saville street , just through the Wicker arches on the right . I do remember that there were tram lines into the very tall archway. Steve birks 08-09-2011, 09:12 :)Thought you guys might like to hear a song I wrote about Lizzie? you can go to my myspace account myspace/stevebirks Steve birks 08-09-2011, 09:14 I heard Lizzie used to be stabled on Nursery Street ? daisyfross 06-11-2011, 18:24 Hello to all, I'm an artist based in Sheffield and was inspired by the story about Lizzie the elephant, so i'm now making a short animated piece of work about Lizzie which i hope to show at a venue later on this week( and will post on this forum). I would like to accompany it with some written background information, and having read many of the comments on this forum i thought it would be great if i could include some of them, because there are so many different memories and thoughts which together create a beautifully mythical picture of Lizzie the elephant. Please let me know whether you would have any objection towards some of your comments being printed (I can exclude names) and shown to the public. Best wishes, Daisy karen S 16-01-2012, 20:57 Hi My class are doing a project about Lizzie and are hoping to make it into a short animated film. We are going to use some of these brilliant stories. I wondered if Steve Birks would mind if we put some of his song into it. If you`d rather we didnt thats fine. karen S 05-02-2012, 21:43 The elephant originally came from Sedgewicks Circus. All circuses had to `stand down` because of the war.:) |
