View Full Version : It's always your fault

I've seen a few threads recently where people will argue that black is white in order to make something the fault of the poster.

I get the impression that if I were to post

"I'm really angry, because I was shot whilst walking to the shops by a gangster".

I'd get people telling me that it was my fault for not wearing a bullet proof vest, for walking to the shops, for looking at the gangster funny, for shopping at tesco's rather than morrisons, or some other reason why being shot was my fault (arguing too much on SF maybe).

Why can't some people (maybe me included) just accept a story at face value, or maybe question it a little, but not then run around in circles trying to prove the OP wrong?

Maybe its that they sound like stories and not experiences ;)

dunno which threads your specifically talking about tho?

There has been posts where the poster has quite obviously posted an exageration or twisted a story to make it sound intersting. I could name a number of threads/posters that have done this and to be honest if we took all posts as read the replies would be a bit boring and nothing would be open to debate.

Good point though.. maybe posters bend the truth thinking that other people will find the exact story boring or unbelievable in the first place.. maybe SF has created a catch 22 situation and we are now stuck in that rut !!

lol - maybe that's why I have so few stories to post, I rarely get run over, shot, beaten up, or anything, at least without doing something wrong myself.

No links, find 'em yourself, there's the 'nearly run over' thread, where some people have spent pages trying to defend drivers going through red lights, as one example.

This often happens, if you notice, when there aren't any particularly thrilling threads near the top of the list at the time and some people want to stir things up to have a good debate.

ive seen this happen alot to, and even sometimes when i think i will post a thread about something i think twice and more often than not dont bother cos its usually only the sad herberts that dont have a life so try and fill the gap by busy bodying and trying to prove someone wrong or just plain take the **** that answer.

im sure theres some sort of game going on where all the sad no lifers score points for how argumentative and poxy they can be on as many threads as possible :hihi: :hihi:

Cyclone, I often think you just post sometimes for the sake of it. You're a bit of a nitpicker yourself, really, aren't you? No, you are though, aren't you?

"I'm really angry, because I was shot whilst walking to the shops by a gangster".

I can't really see how you can assume he was a gangster. This really implies he was the member of a gang when he really is more likely to be an individual who knows you and has decided to shoot you. I also can't help thinking that your use of the word "gangster" is really code for "black gunman" and you are mostly annoyed on racial grounds and wouldn't be quite so angry if the gunman had been a white woman.

Would a white women be classed as a "gunMAN"? or a gunperson ? or even a guness.. and what if there had been two gunpeople? and of different sexes? or even different races...OWW!!! my brain hurts:confused:

I assume its because some people like to prove other people wrong and they would go to great lengths to prove their point.

In other cases, I think people say things just to provoke a reaction and I sometimes find it difficult to tell if that person is being genuine or not.

I think you are right, by using the term "gangster", rather then "gunperson" and then only focusing on his own anger he has shown contempt for all minority women and a lack of concern for the issues which led them to be forced to gun him down*

*By "down" I am not suggesting that he was in any way superior to begin with.

Maybe that accounts for its popularity? After all it IS without doubt the most visited and posted upon local forum in the UK, and probably the WORLD!

People with no connection to Sheffield come here from all over the known Universe just to argue with one another, we're the best at what we do obviously :D

I can show you another one if you like. No, no, seriously... it's the "internet forum phenomena". It's not like you'll believe me, cos you'll think I'm arguing for the sake of arguing then.

I didn't claim I was inoccent (I agree with people at least as often as I disagree though, then I have to argue with the other people who disagree).

I don't troll though and I wasn't fishing with this thread, if anyone disagrees I'll send the boys round to 'have a word'. :D

So at least you admit you are in the wrong when you get shot etc.

Some people just moan on about it and won't accept it was their fault.

Isn't that the idea of a forum (debate)or is it just a way for people to complain about others who can't defend themselves on here?

Perhaps we should just post and then have the mods close the thread so we dont hear things we dont like. We have to remember that if we post something that is wrong and someone believes it to be true then lives could be at risk.

I don't believe it's called the Sheffield Debating Forum.

The idea of it is for us to post things, whatever we like within the rules. Be that a 'for sale', a diatribe, a topic for discussion or a critique on the colour yellow.

Thats funny as I just now posted a thread about nearly getting run over this morning whilst at one of the pedestrian crossings of uni roundabout.

Maybe I deserve to be run over for being a tax-dodging student and not having a proper job at 26 :(

Or maybe somebody up there likes me enough to keep me alive? :)

The idea is surely to post what we believe is correct and to correct others when they say something wrong that could endanger others lives. Unless other people's lives are not important to you.

No doubt it was your fault for not looking, for antagonising the driver, for not wearing nonslip shoes and a short skirt (I have no idea if your female or not, but hey, it's the naughties).
You should probably be fined for traumatising the poor driver.

Live - I think you're taking it a little bit too seriously. Sure try to correct any misinformation, but anyone who relies on the forum as the sole source of information for something potentially life threatening probably has a very short life expectancy anyway.

Absolutely! If everyone just agrees with everyone else all the time, how mind-numbingly BORING is that? What's the point?

I love getting my teeth into a good argument - helps keep the mind sharp! :D

And if we all agree, where does the debate come from?

As long as personal insults and attempts to undermine people's self-esteem are kept out of the picture, I think SF is pretty much what a Forum should be
