Two of the areas – Dixon Lane near the markets and the area surrounding Sheffield Cathedral, on Church Street – are already known hot-spots for homeless people drinking on the streets.
And police have received a string of complaints from worried shoppers and office-workers.
Traders are already operating a "zero tolerance" zone at Dixon Lane, warning they will call the police if they spot anyone street drinking or loitering in the gallery area.
(see news item on http://www.sheffieldtoday.net)
What do people think?
Will banning street drinking, cut down on assaults and violence ?

It might work if it is policed properly.
I don`t see why the ban can`t be applied to all streets, It might help to stop ( or make it harder for) all the underaged drinkers. The violence will still happen at closing times unfortunately.

In my town I've seen a big difference. No scum spilling out of pubs blocking the streets and roads and no smashed glass.

never mind dixon lane, can't we get read of all the abusive street drinkers that hang about on devonshire green.
it could be really nice if it wasn't for them and chavs smoking blunts

Odd that, most people i've seen smoking blunts are usually quite chilled out.

All this half measure will acheive is to simply move the problem to another area, this measure needs to be made city wide.
But then you have the problem of enforcing it everwhere, this is not feasible with the man power available.
I think we need to have a little more understanding towards these people who are in a vunerable state and need to be helped more than at present.
After all I dont think they are enjoying how they have ended up,and im sure that many of them have mental issues as well as alcohol problems.

It has worked in other cities - so I say fine. The skateboard problem has been nearly sorted by providing them with skateboard parks - so you can have your sandwich in peace without some droopy trousered fuzzy goofball attempting a stunt right next to your head and ending up in intensive care. I think we should provide drinking parks. Instead of swings you could have play bars where people could go and do street drinking in a safe environment.
But i must say I do miss watching skateboarders breaking their backs in the city centre. The city is duller for it.
