View Full Version : Where did you pass your driving test?
I passed mine second try in Sheffield about 26 years ago. I know that there is a written part to the test now though I am not sure that that will make you a better or safer driver.
The test centre was at Handsworth and the route took us down the Parkway into Sheffield. It was horrendous as there did not used to be any traffic lights on the big round-a-bout outside Ponds Forge. As you can probably imagine it was more a case of foot down and hope for the best than anything else.
Which town or city did you take yours and did you pass first time?
DaBouncer 25-06-2003, 13:52 Sheffield, out of the Handsworth centre second time. Only passed last year tho (and I'm 25). Only took my test last year two (both of em).
Did the theory which was a piece of p***, although I hear it's harder now with the visual aspect n all that.
Failed first time for driving too slow on the parkway... what a f****** cop ou IMHO! Almost chinned the examiner!
Basingstoke - First time even after hitting a curb, the tester must have been feeling generous that day!
Which one do you mean as I have had seven driving tests and driven a million miles? car, motor cycle, lorry, articulator, coach, double deck bus, heavy goods.
I passed my car driving test the first time in 1945. 58 yrs. without a serious accident!!!
Passed my theory test 1st time with full marks
Passed my driving test first time too even though I scraped the tyre round the corner when I did that manouver........driving examiner was well sound ....had a right crap driving instructor though! he would never turn up for some lessons the rat bag....I got him back by not taking the pass plus lessons that he harped on about when driving me home after I had passed hee heee heee
Took my test in Sheffield even though I had lessons all over the country...never stopped anywhere long enough to take it but finally did in Sheff
I still can't drive, and refuse to learn...never had a lesson in my life, lol
Passed my test in 1993 at Middlewood Road testing centre. I only had 9 lessons. The head examiner took me for my test. I actually thought I had messed the questions up on the highway code at the end but I still passed :)
I took mine in Rotherham about 5 years ago. My first one was cancelled because of "bad light" (which my instuctor thought meant is was the driving examiner's Christmas Party that evening ;) ). I passed first time when it was re-arranged though :)
rickmiles85 25-06-2003, 18:52 Hehe, ive not taken it yet. Its booked tho! :) oooo! its quite soon too! Now we do a theory test combined with a hazard awareness. you have to be pretty stupid to fail the hazard wareness. its very very simple! You have to get 38marks if I recall correctly. this is out of something around 75/6 not sure. So 50%. What you have to do is click on the screen when you see a hazard which causes you to slow down or change direction. a time zone is activated so you have to click before it expires to be awarded a mark. :D
PaulTansley 27-06-2003, 21:48 Took 3 tests in 1976 and failed all 3 though very narrowley.
I got so P****d off that i drove on a prov licence until 1992 when my job demanded i had to have a full licence.
I took a refresher course and passed 3 weeks later, though if i had not been pushed into taking it i never would have and carried on as usuall.
16 years road experience made it a doddle to pass.
Passed in November of 2002 as I was 18 in December 2002. Passed first time with a great instructor and examiner!! Passed the theory first time too, which was also to me a piece of cake!! I took my test at Handsworth, drove round that area for a while, then ended up somewhere on a 60mph road and it was absolutely pi**ing is down and foggy. I thought I'd failed but I passed. Best thing I ever did was learn to drive. My mum passed 5 years ago after 5 tests and always says she wishes she'd have done it younger.

So by that you would say that experience is more crucial than knowledge? reason I ask is because some people think that you are a better driver when you have just passed your test but from then on you pick up bad habits and don't do it proper. I would disagree with that myself and I think driving has always been about experience and confidence.
PaulTansley 28-06-2003, 13:36 They say when you have passed your test, then go and learn to drive......Thats very true which is why you have a green L plate after passing because it lets people know that you are qualified but without the real experience.
When you pass your test, you can drive on the motorway, thats a very scary thing to do on your own for the first time without the security of an instructor with you.
The years i drove on a provisional gave me the experience and road sense to be confident when i took my test 11 years ago and to be honest compared to my tests in 1976 it was easy, i was full of confidence and not be-littled by the examiner.
The theory test came after, so i did not have to face that.
The hardest part was the highway code and could'nt remember the sighn names though i did explain what they meant.
Regarding bad habbits, yes i supose you do but i had to shake them all out of my system on a refresher and drive like a novice so that was quite hard.
No more changing gear at junctions, using the mirror when ever i felt like it or driving with one hand on the wheel, they all had to go. As soon as i passed i went back to my normal self.
I passed mine in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
kittykat 01-07-2003, 11:02 Rotherham in january. Its good cos they dont have a carpark so all you have to do is pull in at the side of the road but its bad cos all the other learner cars and also at the side of the road pulling out so you cant see where youre going.
I must have had a blind/stupid instructor cos im the worst driver ever and get beeped at loads.
Funnily enough though - give me a bay to park in and im in it like a rat up a drainpipe.
hiyabeing 01-07-2003, 20:18 I passed mine second time in Skegness 12 years ago. Only after being told to pull over and asked whether I was exempt from wearing my seat belt, got away with it coz he thought it was nerves - but I just plain forgot.
Then 1st time drove my car all way from Skeg to Nottingham, crashed 20 foot from my Gran's front door. Nightmare.
..........Ive been told that Sheffield is one of the best places to pass your driving test and get a good grounding in general driving as there are so many flamin' hills around an dwinding roads...especially Walkley

I strongly disagree! I passed mine in Liverpool, where there are no hills, sharp bends and hidden dips.
Actually, I think you're right...for those reasons
im starting my weeks course for class1 this friday 17th feb 06 and i have my test on saturday week. im hoping i pass first time as the company is paying for it.
does anyone have any tips please...serious ones only please
Tintsexpert 16-02-2006, 15:00 Bike test 1984 from middlewood, test around herries road / drive near tesco (first time) Car later same year from middlewood, around wisewood I seem to remember!first time pass again, Got some friend 2 brothers & one of the wives between them 37 tests. 1 time he didnt get out of the car park behind the test centre at middlewood! £300 worth of damage to rear end & wall!
fruit&nut 16-02-2006, 15:06 i passed mine at handsworth,sheffield,along time ago :)
WallBuilder 16-02-2006, 16:52 I passed first time at Handsworth.
However on the day of my test there was a gas leak alert in Morrisons at Darnall and the roads were completely grid-locked. I spent an hour in stationary traffic and so didn't do a three point turn, reverse round a corner, parallel park, emergency stop or much else for that matter.
I must of looked unrattled and behaved very competently and must of demonstrated that I was a good driver as he passed me without a word.
Passed mine at Manor Top Test Centre in 1981 .... drove down Heeley where all the buildings had just been flattened so no probs reversing around corners.
Passed my test at Handsworth in 1979 at the 3rd attempt. 1st test was very nervous, 2nd test original car broke down and I had to use an older car we even had to bump start it outside the test centre (good old BSM?). 3rd attempt passed though very nervous different driving school. Passed my bike test 1 month after car test at 1st attempt, I think the test centre for the bike test was at Hammerton Rd Hillsbrough.
Passed at Handsworth 3 weeks after I turned 17 1st time!
I also got that apparently "harsh", well known instructor (Won't name him, incase anybody here has an upcoming test there!!!)
I learned to handbrake turn a manual car before i hit pubity :suspect:
slimsid2000 16-02-2006, 18:14 I failed mine at Middlewood a few weeks back and will be taking another one there in a couple of weeks.

I thought there were no driving tests in 1945. They were suspended for the war and not reintroduced until a few years later. Didn't you just apply for a licence without needing to take a test?
I passed mine in Liverpool, where there are no hills, sharp bends and hidden dips.
Only thing, as soon as you do the "Emergency stop" in Liverpool, a group of chavs with trolley jacks are there to nick the wheels.
shoeshine 16-02-2006, 18:29 Passed mine in 1959 in Rotherham, 6 Driving Lessons at Rotherham School of Motoring, first time pass. No motorways then, and just an Oral Test on the Highway Code.
Stalled the car at a Zebra crossing, relaxed and went through all the motions to drive on. Examiner passed me......must have been one of his better days. He was renowned for being the toughest Examiner in Rotherham (I was warned beforehand)
Mind you, the bloke carrying the flag in front of the car was a bit of a distraction.
Pulled twice for speeding since.......Worksop 1977, Sheffield 1987.
Never had an Insurance Claim or driving accident....a tribute to all the other drivers on the road I think.
Done about 800.000 miles since I passed, including having a Rep's Job.
...................................
I passed my test on the 18th Feb 2000, at middlewood rd test centre 3 days before me birthday....It was a good weekend!! :D
I passed 2nd time, 3rd time technically because i couldnt take my second test...I gave someone my provisional licence as a from of ID, and forgot to ask for it back
First time pass in 1991 - test centre on Eastern Avenue near Manor Top.
I remember doing my 3 point turn on Base Green - the road was so wide I had to work hard not just do a U turn.
sheff_minx 16-02-2006, 20:52 It's my first test tomorrow morning at Handsworth and I'm well scared!!!
Passed theory first time with full marks so should be ok... I know I can drive and am capable of passing, it's just a case of not doing anything stupid...... I'll let you know how I get on!

I'm sure she'll appreciate your thoughts but she doesn't need luck - just needs to stay confident!
By the way and just for the record, passed my driving test first time at Dodd Street, Hillsborough, in 1976, and passed my driving test to be an instructor first time in 1999 (2 minor driving faults in an hour's driving - one for looking too long over my shoulder when joining the motorway andthe other for travelling too close behind another vehicle).
Yellowrose 16-02-2006, 21:12 Did anyone else do theirs at Manor Top? I did in 1985 I think. Passed first time, but had lots of lessons. On my test I went up Gleadless Road (steep hill bit) and a very old chesterfield bus practically stopped about 10 yards from the top then proceeded to crawl the last few yards. I had to think ........ do I overtake it or stick behind it ......... dont overtake on the brow of a hill versus failing to make sufficient progress. I went round it because I knew any other driver would have, but I made a big show of having a good look and waiting till I had a good view. It obviously worked.

Ah, yes, didnt see that. Someone else did manor top. I remember TPTs on basegreen, and reverse round corner. A very very long corner.
failed 3 times, passed 4th in Rotherham.
my 3 failures got worse, my first i got 4 minors and 1 major, second 9 minors 2 major, third 11 minor 1 major.
fourth i passed, and im not sure what i got, i was too excited to care.
my fourth test was:
- with an examiner, rotherham test center pulled down from newcastle to cover backlogs, and his first test in rotherham.
- taken after heavy divulges in Kalms
I passed first time here in Sheffield at Middlewood Road Testing Station in 1988, best thing I ever did.
I passed my driving test... third time lucky in Bournemouth on the 8th December 1992... :D
I passed my test on the 18th Feb 2000, at middlewood rd test centre 3 days before me birthday....It was a good weekend!! :D

Oops... Just think tho... if you had've taken your second test when arranged... you may have failed... maybe it was fate that you missed that test and went for the second/third test when you did... i would still class it as second time passed... as it was a second test :D

Thats what I thought when I passed.......Fate :D
Passed mine first time on Nov 5th 2003 from Middlewood test centre. 9 minor faults and I very nearly blew it on the 'home straight' when I accelerated to 38 mph in a 30 zone. Luckily I caught myself and slowed down before the examiner could have a proper look. He must've been in a good mood that day because I'm sure he realised I'd noticed my mistake and slowed down again to within the speed limit. Lucky me eh? :o I passed my theory test 2nd time around, just for the record.
I'm not sure if everyone else had the same experience but my driving examiner was like a robot. Left turn please.....right turn please.....turn in the road please.....new batteries please! :suspect: Everything sentence in the same tone. He sounded like a recorded message. :hihi: Cheers for the pass though.
*Twinkle* 18-02-2006, 19:40 I passed first time on November 30th 2004, with 7 minor faults :D That was at Handsworth, Sheffield. I'd waited 4 full months for that test, so it was a good job I passed first time :D I was a little miffed that I'd had to wait so long for my test, as I'd wanted to pass while I was still 17 (18th B/day was 21st Nov 2004) but heyho, at least I passed!
Full marks on t'theory too :D
My examiner was really nice, apparently he was a new one employed to deal with the backlog, as my instructor hadnt seen him before. His daughter went to Silverdale same as me, so we were nattering about Silverdale most of the time :D
franc1987 18-02-2006, 21:41 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I passed at Handsworth in 99. I failed 3 tests in Cleethorpes the previous year - the first one horrendously, the second one cos it was turn in the road in a narrow road with a bit of a hill (unheard of over there). I couldn't quite get it in three but only knew how to do a perfect 3-point turn not anything else, so had to bump the kerb. The third one was a dubious fail (a car was up my arse down Cleethorpes high street and a pedestrian stepped out in front of me - didn't have to emergency stop but did have to brake and car was right up my arse. The examiner failed me despite acknowledging the other car was too close. Not that I'm still bitter. Prob should have complained but was moving to Sheff a fortnight later and had to catch up with all mymates who'd been drinking for several hours - for twas the same day as A-level results)
BoroughGal 19-02-2006, 08:07 I passed first time, at Middlewood test centre, in about 1992.
I had the examiner in the front, and a head examiner (examining the examiner!) in the back.
I stalled it on my hill start, but was told that this would have been due to the extra weight in the back (obviously, when you're learning, you don't know things like that) and that they make allowances for it.
I think the whole stalling thing made me calm down, because I was certain I'd failed, and I then started to do ok.
But like someone else said, it took me a long time to be able to drive properly - and some may say I still can't now.... ;)
Lived in Upperthorpe passed in 1967 in Rotherham because relation owned Rotherham School of Motoring at the time. Did it at the second attempt. After being failled not putting handbraek on when trying to cross Eastwood road. The Tizer wagon was parked right on the corner 9 no yellow lines then)
Rode & drove everything for 54yrs ,but i've never taken a test in my life,on return to U K fm 3yr service in libya,I just handed my C.O a hand writen army motor bike lic',which i never had a test for,and he came back with a full civilian one.He never said a word and i sure did'nt.
Passed first time, Handsworth test centre September 1997 when I was 25. That was the year the written test came in, I think.
deadheadfred 21-02-2006, 12:26 Bike test around the Longley/Shirecliffe area in 1980 - passed first time on evil Kawasaki two-stroke triple. Went on to long succession of big bikes until I needed the cash for a deposit for the house, and then had to face the practicality of carrying two kids/pushchair/changing bag etc. .
Car test at Middlewood - passed at second attempt in December 1981 - snow & ice, but at least there weren't many other vehicles around for me to hit.
this is just an update on my earlier posting regarding my class 1 test.
today is the 25th feb 2006 and i took my test today and i past with only 4 minors, 3 were on roundabouts (not to worry lol) and it was really windy today and i got 1 minor for straying to close the the centre lane on a dual carried way but corrected myself.
i would give you all one tip if you are taking your class 2 or 1 test and that is to ask the examiner if your instructor can come with you on the test. they dont mind, it made a heap of difference and made me feel alot calmer.
it felt like i was still on training, confidence grown instantly. so remember get your instructor to come with you.
good luck everyone and happy motoring
cheekyone 25-02-2006, 18:07 passed mine ist time in sept 1995 at middlewood road centre:bigsmile:
