This year i went to town on planting hundreds of flowers in my recently refurbed garden and it has attracted quite a lot of bees.
So to make use of them i was thinking of putting in a hive and hopefully get some free honey.

Aha, well thats the theory anyway, but i do not have the expert'ees to carry this out so i am looking to learn the art of bee keeping and carry it out although in a very small way.
Does anybody know anyone who keeps bees or where i can learn it locally.

Thanks.

My Dad keeps bees, I don't know where he learnt his stuff, I think he read quite a few books and I think that there is a bee keepers association or something.
It takes a year or two to actually get any honey and he seems to have quite a lot of problems quite frequently but i think this is due to a disease which has been killing off british bees in recent years.
Bees are soooo amazing though, they are the coolest of all the insects:)

If you have any specific things you want to know I will try and find out for you.

Good luck

Thanks Elf
A good start would be to take a look at your dads bees and have a one to one chat about them if he is willing.
Really take it from there.
PM me with any details you ahve or want and we will sort something out.
Books are helpfull only when you are getting practical experience and a hands on approach would be best.

Or do a search on good ol' Google about bee keeping.

As for hands on experience, be careful... Don't put your hand in a beehive without protective gloves on or it's almost a given you'll get a rather nasty sting.

Bees, the ******* children of Wasps.

They used to have big bee hives on heelly city farm behind the big plastic greenhouse things. Being considerate types we used to boot it and run like ****!!! Maybe they will give you some advice.

We only tapped it really. we were too chicken **** to encounter the wrath of the bees. AAAAAARGH! BEES EVERYWHERE!:o :o :o

A friend of ours use to be Martha Sterwarts bee keeper (not sure if you know her) anyhow he left her as she didn't want to pay him what he was worth, then begged him to come back, he of course refused, now the government has sent him to Africa to teach them how to keep bees and make honey, needless to say he enjoyed himself teaching instead of keeping.
