View Full Version : Blue Bins..Exactly what shold I put in them? 56cheffy 12-10-2006, 08:15 I know they are for paper and cardboard, but am I allowed/supposed to put that shiny packaging in that you find on some foods..ie like the cartons fruit juice comes in! lonelywoman 12-10-2006, 08:32 You aren't supposed to put contaiminated card in, thus packaging which is in direct contact with food or drink. I guess this rules out juice cartons. I do put in frozen boxes which have been in contact with food but shake out crumbs first. grace cgksheff 12-10-2006, 08:35 What can I put in the blue bin? YES PLEASE - Newspapers, magazines, cards, cardboard packaging, catalogues, junk mail, white and coloured paper. NO THANKS - Packaging contaminated with food waste (e.g. pizza boxes, fruit juice or milk cartons), plastic, glass, metal, textiles, garden waste or any other general household waste. http://www.onyxsheffield.co.uk/wastecolbluebins.asp weenireeni 12-10-2006, 10:25 oh god i never knew all that, ive just been dumping in everything cardboard!!! :o  mifsit 12-10-2006, 12:41 I suppose you could compost pizza boxes, make sure there's no left overs in them, tear them up and add to your pile. Tetra packs can normally be recycled but you have to post them back to the manufacturer. viking 12-10-2006, 12:44 Right. Black bins, blue boxes, blue bags, blue bins, Green bins. Not ANY of these allow dead dogs to be disposed of, Chuffin barmy. dieselbabe 12-10-2006, 12:49 oh god i never knew all that, ive just been dumping in everything cardboard!!! :o  I never knew that as well so your not the only one, i thought ALL paper and cardboard was to be put in these bins, I been putting in pizza and takeaway boxs and OJ cartons and other boxs that has been in contact with food in my blue bin since we had the bins. kckc 12-10-2006, 12:50 I wash out juice cartons and put them in the blue bin. Do you reckon that's OK? Paulmat 12-10-2006, 16:02 I think the problem with juice carton's is that they have the foil on the inside. Classic Rock 12-10-2006, 16:08 Right. Black bins, blue boxes, blue bags, blue bins, Green bins. Not ANY of these allow dead dogs to be disposed of, Chuffin barmy. How would they know if you've put a dead dog in your black bin if you put it in a black bin liner and cover it with pizza boxes? Can they trace it back to you? Would they return it? :o bazjea 12-10-2006, 16:10 I would also add that that all boxes and cartons should be flattened. The number of bins that you see with boxes sticking out the top. If people just spent a few minutes tearing boxes and cartons to flatten them, they would find that they could get a lot more in. maelstrom 12-10-2006, 19:14 Right, first off you can not put juice cartons in your blue bin, these are called 'tetrapaks' and have a silver foil lining that cannot be recycled in the paper recycling plants, putting them in your blue bin ends up polluting their waste streams, causing them hassle to remove. Secondly, you do not have to send 'tetrapaks' back to the manufacturers for recycling, there are purple recycling bins that take 'tetrapaks', there are some situated in the carpark of Waitrose and the bottom of Eccasall road. For more information on recycling in Sheffield, please go to this site : http://www.letssortitsheffield.org/home.asp And for more general recycling info vist : http://www.recyclenow.com/index.html Happy recycling :D kckc 12-10-2006, 19:32 Right, first off you can not put juice cartons in your blue bin, these are called 'tetrapaks' and have a silver foil lining that cannot be recycled in the paper recycling plants, putting them in your blue bin ends up polluting their waste streams, causing them hassle to remove. I get Co-Op juice and there doesn't seem to be any silver foil linings in the cartons as you can see through them when held up to light. Thanks for the links - I'll check them out and stop recycling these cartons if necessary. Hummybabe 12-10-2006, 20:11 OMG! i've put pizza boxes in my blue bin! :o I take the greaseproof paper out of it first then dispose it in the blue bin! Best not do that anymore! :nono: *smacks hand* ANDIM68 12-10-2006, 20:27 ALL I can say is watch what you put in which bin. A freind?(sp) of mine has had letters from veolia? (whatever called now) 1:Saying black bin contained recyclable material which was causing bin to overflow 2:Green bin contained items not accustomed to garden rubbish (he swears it`s not his) 3:blue bin overloaded boxes not folded flat hence causing bin to be too full see 1 |
