I know this may sound a bit potty, but I've always wanted to juggle. I can throw a couple of oranges up in the air and catch them - but no more.

I would dearly love to learn how to juggle properly.

Would anyone be interested in forming an online juggling club?

We could go through the learning process together and assess each other's progress.

Oops, just dropped another orange.

I wouldn't fancy trying to catch some kids or a college.

I used to help run a juggling workshop a few years ago, teaching juggling balls, clubs, rings, fire, knives, and also Diablo and Uni Cycle. I used to use some online resources - so I'll try and find the links (they were pretty good, with little animations of what a particular trick/cascade should look like).

Although I'm off traveling in a couple of months, I'll happily [try to!] teach online if the interest is there, before I go.

Sam Miguel, I'm not an expert juggler (I've not really tried juggling clubs or other non-spherical objects or managed any of the complex ball juggling techniques) but I may be able to teach you the basics, even on a mainly text-only messageboard like this one.

If you or anyone else wants to have a go the first thing you need to do is find three objects which will ideally be the same size, will need to be small enough to enable you to hold two of them in one hand with ease (I've got large hands so I can hold two tennis balls in one hand but if you've got small hands juggling balls or ping-pong balls may be better for you) and won't be damaged or cause damage if they go astray (so I would advise against using pieces of fruit or cricket balls).

Once you have got three suitable objects leave two of them to one side because the early lessons only require one object (which for the sake of this explanation will be a ball). Hold the ball in whichever hand you normally use for throwing (which in my case is my right hand). Stand up with your arms loosely down by your sides and then raise your hands in front of you whilst keeping your elbows in the same position (your hands will be around waist height). Once you've done that throw the ball straight across and catch it in your other hand and then throw it back again and catch it.

Once you've got used to throwing the ball with either hand and catching it with either hand instead of throwing it straight across from hand to hand try throwing it a bit higher but catching it at the height it is thrown from. When you find that you are throwing the ball to roughly where your other hand is (rather than having to move your hand a lot to catch the ball wherever else you threw it) keep throwing it a bit higher until you reach the stage where you are throwing the ball up to your eye level but still catching it at around waist height. Once you reach that stage instead of trying to throw the ball even higher try to consistently throw the ball up to your eye height whilst still catching it at around waist height.

Hopefully at some point during this exercise you will have realised that ideally the ball will follow a symmetrical trajectory, starting at your throwing hand and then going up and across to a high point which is halfway between your hands and then falling down and across at an angle which is the mirror image of the upward trajectory and into your catching hand. The key to juggling is knowing when the ball reaches that high point and if you can consistently throw a ball to a particular high point with either hand and catch it you are ready for the lessons involving two balls.

Hopefully that will give you enough to practice for a while. If anyone wants to try the next lesson say so on this thread (I've subscribed to it) and I will try to post the next lesson later tonight.
