Nawwww! the portrait was based on Mike Bower, didn't you notice the scrappy little beard thing going on there ... :D

Am loving the off the shoulder cocktail effect, teamed with this season's must-have accessory, the double headed hammer.

Maybe we ought to lay off this Thor-bashing. Viking will be having us in a Norse version of a Jihad.

And as the great god of thunder arose from the maiden's bed, he spake.

"I am Thor!"

The maiden replied, "Tho am I, but wathn't it marvellouth!"

What I like about this Sheffield Forum thing is, the threads all start quite serious and sensible but the humour eventually sneaks through. Keep up the good work. Bloody Marvellouth

The God of War went out one day,
To ride on his favourite filly.
"I'm Thor", he cried,
And the filly replied,
"You've forgotten your thaddle, thilly!"

According to A History of Birley Spa by Leonard Widdowson there are references to the spring and its medicinal uses from the 18th century. But there is not the slightest evidence that it is Roman, as suggested earlier.

not quite - on the corner of Fitzalan Square, now the Hein Gericke motorcycle accessory shop.

Sorry, was thinking of the Roman bath at Hackenthorpe. Also the Marples Hotel was the one to take a direct hit. It was not rebuilt until 1959. I worked for the photographer who took all the progress photo's for Henry Boot. This picture is of my great uncle's lorry which help clear the site.

The Marples pub was actually at the corner of Fitzalan Square and High Street, next to The White Buildings. The site was derelict and boarded off for many years after the direct hit. On the wall of the next building was a huge billboard advertising 'Milady' confectionery. Showing my age now.
