View Full Version : How does hypnotherapy to stop smoking work?
i asked a few questions about how this would work to stop smoking on another thread 5 mins ago but now the thread had been pinched :suspect:
so has anyone ever tried this and did it work?
what would i expect to feel like, would i be dying for a fag but something in me stops me from reaching for a cig or if i did have one would it taste so rancid that i wouldnt be able to smoke it, or would i feel like a have never smoked so just wouldnt feel the need to light up?
i would definatly have this done if it was guarenteed , can hypnotists give a rock solid guarentee
bladesufc1 11-10-2006, 09:27 again i'll be a test dummy for this, please PM me
what if you go thru the rest of your life absolutly gagging for a fag but every one you light up tastes like burning rubber? that would be right torture :hihi:

There is a Hypnotherapist there who is amaisingly succesful at helping people to stop smoking, so far no one has been back for their free appointment they are entitled to if the treatment does not work, I can only assume therefore that he has a 100% success rate.
He records your session onto CD so you can play it at home and reinforce the treatment, he also helps people to loose weigh. He is becoming very popular as you can imagine, and word of mouth reccomendations are coming thick and fast.
He did a session with my friend who at 41 years old had never left the country because of her paralising fear of flying, it took 1 session! 2 weeks ago we went to Paris, she was abit nervous on the flight out but on the return was very exited and now wants to know when we are going again.
My little brother had it done, a christmas present from my mum. It worked for a bit but then he started again. I can't remember him being told it tasted funny or anything, I think they just kind of re programme your mind into thinking you are a non smoker. I would like to try it myself but at the end of the day I still want to smoke so nothing is going to stop me, even though I know I should.
Let us know how you get on if you go ahead litha :)
I did it, and sorry to dissapoint but the biggest waste of £200. 3 of us went and not one stopped.
bobsyouruncle 11-10-2006, 10:45 A couple of months ago, I packed smoking in after 22 years, gave up just like that, no hypnotherapy, nowt, just simply stopped.
Worked out I could save £150 a month by giving them up, now that the little 'uns on its way, it was well worth it I reckon.
No more stinky breath, yellow stained teeth, or wretching first thing in the morning till the first fag of the day, just I feel so much better and a little healthier.
Try it. :D
I would recommend Allen Carrs Easyway to stop smoking, which is a kind of waking hypnosis. I went from smoking between 40 and 60 cigarettes a day to nothing after one session. Costs a bit, but is good.
I also tried hypnotherapy. Complete waste of time and money in my opinion.
Would also recommend Alan Carr's book (rather ironic thst he's now got cancer though).
By the way, I stopped about 6 weeks ago just by not buying any more. Worked a treat!
emperor_ming 11-10-2006, 11:38 You could get them to hypnotise you into thinking you're a chicken.
That'll work, i've yet to see any poultry with a nicotine addiction.
troyhark 11-10-2006, 12:24 My stepdad has two sessions wirh a hypnotherapist and never wanted a cigarette again.
I also tried hypnotherapy. Complete waste of time and money in my opinion.
Not for everyone, though, although neither do I believe the claims above that atherapist has had a 100% success rate...unless (s)he's only done a couple of people. There is research around which I'll post when I get home.
neeeeeeeeeek 11-10-2006, 12:43 What ever method you try you have to really really want to stop. Saying your only going to have one in the pub every now and again just does not work, you really have to mean it and want to stop completly. Might sound like stating the obvious but the people really can't be bothered to make a true effort themselves and think thay paying someone to hypnotise them will make it easy are generally wrong. I stopped smoking a few years ago then this year caught myself having the odd fag when drunk etc. It does not really work so I have had to stop properly again! Good luck though what every method you try.
Jabberwocky 11-10-2006, 12:46 I tried this in 2001.
I spent 200 quid and it worked.
The trouble is the hypnotherapist used to be a stage performer and I suppose old habits die hard, because although i stopped smoking, i did an Elvis
impression every time i heared a bell ring.
YakQueudrue 11-10-2006, 13:09 I tried it and convinced myself it was working for a couple of days. Temptation once again got the better of me and I'm back on 20 a day
I have had it done too,and nope it didnt work for me either or my mum or my brother....we went to a chap in Rotherham and his success rate was very high too maybe we was the only 3 it didn't work on?
purdyamos 11-10-2006, 19:22 Litha, I'm another Allen Carr success! (I did it with the book rather than the video/live clinics) If you do a search for his name on the forum, you'll find a whole thread about his method and how it makes people feel about stopping. A lot of what people say will seem strange (you actually get excited about stopping and don't get murderous withdrawal cravings) but it's true for most people who try him. A lot cheaper than hypnotherapy, I can't recommend this method highly enough. Best of luck whatever you do to stop!
dustbunny 11-10-2006, 20:13 did not work for me neither did acupunture, but eventually did almost 20 years ago, I do not care what anyone says it is not easy
purdyamos 11-10-2006, 20:21 I do not care what anyone says it is not easy
It is if you do it the easy way. And no, nobody believes it until they do it and it works. That's why I suggested reading the Allen Carr thread, because of the sheer number of testimonials. :)
lizzmobile 11-10-2006, 21:35 I worked with a girl who was so hooked she would spark up the second she woke up in the morning, and she had ONE sessions with a hypno, and never smoked again.
pattricia 11-10-2006, 21:45 If they showed you someones lungs in a bottle who had died of lung cancer ,you would never touch one again. They are black instead of pink.

Nice idea pattricia - I've seen smokers lungs and various other nasty bits, but I still smoke. I'll stop when I'm ready to.
thankyou for all your replies, i have absolutly no will power what so ever, i went to the stop smoking groups at the doctors , i had the tablets instead of the patches but they were rubbish.
the black nasty lungs didnt do much neither did it when i nearly died of double pnuemonia a few years back and everyone told me i should never smoke again.
i dont think ill waste my money on hypnotherapy ill go and have a nosey at the alan carr threads :)

They didnt work for me because Im an awkward bugger but they work for lots of other people.
I did a thread on here about it a few months ago so it should be in the search box.

Assuming the therapist you mean is Gary Oke then that's the hypnotherapist I gave up smoking with. It's not a "magic cure", you have to actually want to give up smoking. However, I had tried several times with patches, willpower, Zyban etc with no success. I saw Gary on his guarantee scheme about 4 months ago now and I haven't smoked since the initial session (although it is a long 2 hour session). I was amazed at how much easier it was with hypnotherapy. My sister has also given up with him now about 2 months ago. It's hard to explain how it works, I did "nearly" smoke a few times but each time I lit a cigarette I just thought "I don't need this, I don't want to do this anymore" and threw the cigarette away. It wasn't as though cigarettes tasted like anything nasty the way you expect from hypnotherapy, I guess I just ended up with the attitude of a non-smoker. The session was expensive (£150) but included a CD of the session and future therapy for up to 6 months free of charge if I didn't stop smoking. He even said that if I was struggling I could call his mobile and talk to him up to 10pm at night as long as he wasn't in a hypnotherapy session with anyone.
When I looked into it, there were several deals like this around but the others had the guarantee of "another" session free of charge, the guarantee with this guy is "how ever many sessions you need" for up to six months. This is why I chose this particular hypnotherapist as he was obviously more confident in his abilities than the others I found.
paul.peace 16-10-2006, 15:49 I've just discovered your post Litha. You originally replied to my hypnotherapy posting. You asked whether stop smoking hypnotherapy is guaranteed (my post got moved and parts deleted - sorry). Unfortunately, hypnotherapy isn't guaranteed. It would be unethical for a hypnotherapist to make guarantees just as it would be for a doctor to guarantee patches or their drug treatments. The therapist gives the client the tools for success and they usually find they lose interest in cigarettes and can't really understand why! It is best to think of the therapist as a facilitator rather than a miracle worker or healer.
Anyone considering seeing me for stop smoking hypnotherapy may find comfort in the following independent statistics...
The following are success rates for various treatments (New Scientist, October 1992, Vol 136):
• 60% - Single session Hypnosis
• 24% - Acupuncture
• 10% - Nicotine Replacement Therapy
• 6% - Willpower alone
In this study, Frank Schmidt and Chockalingam Viswesvaran, University of Iowa carried out a meta-analysis of more than 600 studies which included almost 72,000 people from around the world.
Most hypnotherapists find their own success rates are higher, perhaps due to the refinement of hypnosis and the use of neuro-linguistic programming techniques that are more popular these days. Please don't think that not providing exact success rates means a hypnotherapist is being evasive or has something to hide - it is impossible to measure 'success' because no one has defined what 'success' is. Is stopping for a month, year or lifetime? As a therapist I want people to stop completely but a client may feel cutting down from 20 to 5 a day is success. It is a very subjective term.
I hope all this helps!! Paul (0114) 235 1986
