I would say Cleethorpes is probably the closest, and quickest to get to by train or car too.

I suppose the closest would probably Cleethorpes, they won the "cleanest beach" award last year, it's only just over an hour away, Parkway, M18, M180, quick drive through Grimsby and you're there.

Alternatively there's the more popular East Coast destinations like Brid, Filey etc, slightly further away (not THAT much further though) on the other side of the Humber Bridge.

Hope that helps :)

Cleethorpes isn't a great beach as when the sea is out it cannot be seen with the naked eye!

I would reccommend travelling that little bit further up the coast, you cannot go too far wrong with Scarborough. Bridlington isn't bad either.

There is a charming little beach at Millhouses Park and quite safe for the kids (except for the pitbulls) I haven't noticed much surfing there as yet, just paddling and skimming but I'm sure when the in crowd check out those thirty footers they'll be hangin Ten along the slime coast. And don't be put off by the raw sewage; it's only human! BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE SHARKS. They can give you a nasty bite especially if you annoy them!
Enjoy Sheffields own Riviera at Millhouses Park.http://www.bridgfam.force9.co.uk/mill.htm :loopy: :loopy:

Cleethorpes is easily the closest but like the others have said, Scarborough and Brid are better.. try Robin Hoods Bay, thats a lovely place (a bit hilly if you've got little kids though).

According to the Sheffield council website....

The Peace Garden’s popular nickname is ‘Sheffield’s Beach’ . I have never heard this and asking around neither has anyone else I know!!!

But apparantly........

LIFE IN SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE’S A BEACH THIS SUMMER

The Peace Garden’s popular nickname as ‘Sheffield’s Beach’ is set to become a reality with the installation of 20 tonnes of sand as part of a new free, family event in the City Centre this summer. Sheffield’s Summer Holiday Weekend is described as Two Days of Fun & Sun in Sheffield City Centre and will take place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August.

So on these two days - it will be the nearest!!!

I went to Brid and Scarborough recently and I think they were scruffy. Filey is much better IMO or Robin Hoods Bay.

If you want some nice quiet sandy beaches, try the coast just north of Spurn Head. Easington and Withernsea are really nice.

For gods sake dont go to cleethorpes its bloody awful. Its depressingly crap - full of people you wouldnt want to cross on a dark night and screaming kids bored cos the sand may be clean but its damp and its about a 15 minute walk to the sea cos the tides out. The pier houses a scabby nightclub and the most decent cafe there was a wimpy burger cafe run by 13 year olds who couldnt cope with the influx of 3 customers. Only go if youre a gambling/fish and chip addict!

Hiya Yasser,
Mablethorpe is nice for the kids, and the people are ok too. It's just a bit further up the coast from Skegness

have a nice time!!

Well we love Cleethorpes. The beach is nice and clean and I don't find it too commercialised like some places. It's a good day out if you ask me.

Bridlington's good, but my personal fave is Whitby. Soooo windy all the time, but a fantastic place to be any time of year!!! :D

:D :D

It takes almost as long to get down to the sea as it does to get from Sheff to Cleethorpes.

Though they are nice places the best beach I have visited this year goes to Scarbrough.
Its ploughed every morning and pan flat.
Mind you Britas bay in County Wicklow is an exellent beach but to far for a day trip but worth a long weekend.

Been there many a time! I usually stay at the B&B over the pub by the river in Wicklow.

Blimey! Amazing news about the Peace Gardens beach phenomenon. I simply can't wait to take my long board and catch a wave. Maybe the council could employ some winos as lifeguards. "Arrrrghghngharr!" is all you get to hear from the loudspeakers at Fistral as you paddle out anyway, and the alkies would look lovely dressed up in red shorts and yellow tee shirts. With stains on, naturally. Could get the tattoo lads and their fighting dogs to stand in as sharks for a little extra gnarly edge. Now remember, boogie boarders and swimmers between the red and yellow fag packets, please. Don't want collisions with surfers. Or psychos.

Do you think they could arrange the traditional summer seaside accident? Maybe we could drown Meg 'Tony thinks, I speak' Munn..;)

BTW, took a trip to Scarborough the other day, which was an astonishingly tedious ride although the surfing was ace. Four and three-quarter hours to Cornwall suddenly seems a reasonable journey!

There's no beach at Robin Hood's Bay?
What was I sitting on when I went there last year then? It was sandy and it was next to the sea, and it was next to Robin Hood's Bay.

And there was me thinking it was a beach!!
How dumb do I feel now??

I apologise for the sarcasm but I'm at work and I'm bored out of my skull

Affirmed Yoda. I also have observed a fine particulate silicate material at the waters edge in Robin Hood's Bay.
Not of Saharan proportions maybe but there never the less.

It's not a wide sweeping beach, but it's definitely there. Robin Hood's Bay is a lovely place to take kids. It's like a little piece of Cornwall in Yorkshire.

I've been on the beach also at Robin Hoods Bay. Although when the tide is in there isn't a beach. :D

must have picked the wrong time then.
