I have found the following story on BBC News online. I believe that although Yorkshire Terrier are also owned by Traction group, they are unaffected as they operate on a seperate licence.

Firm gets final safety warning

A South Yorkshire bus company has been warned that it could be banned from operating if it does not improve its safety.
Traffic Commissioners have told Barnsley-based Yorkshire Traction to improve its buses after 21 failed safety inspections within six months.

Regulators said the company was told about safety problems after serious defects were found with some buses.

They added that this is their last warning before the licence is revoked.

No-one from Yorkshire Traction was available to talk to News Online on Friday.

I see the Yorkshire traction buses around Penistone and they do look like they would fall apart in a high wind, maybe even in a gentle breeze.

I haven't seen many old buses on the Terrier routes in sheffiled, can you imagine if one of the condidtions of the revoked license was to take the Terriers off too? Powells would be the major bus company in Sheffield :loopy:

S'probably a good job the Terriers don't come up Stanny then... Although having said that we could do with an alternate bus service up here seeing as we're pretty much stuck cos of the feckin' strike!

Following alternative services run in the Stannington area

61,63 (Yorkshire Terrier Rural links)
267 (Sheffield Community Transport)

they will take you down to Hillsborough where you can interchange with other buses and trams.

Yes, I went on a Tracky bus in Rotherham last night and the bus seemed like it has seen better days!

The Terriers are generally in good nick - they seemed to have spent a lot of money on new buses...

In Sheffield Powells buses tend to look a bit crappy, Mass Transit well dodgy looking, and Aston seem to have quite a motley collection of buses..

TM Travel single deckers are decent, but the double deckers are of a fine vintage - however I haven't had one break down yet and look safe enough, so must be maintained ok. TM seem to give the impression of being a fairly enthusiastic company.

Fantastic!! No buses on the roads whatsoever!!!!

Makes driving around Sheffield a whole lot easier! :-)

Now I wait for an online stuffing from all you non-drivers. :-p

I think the way Yorkshire Traction operates its Yorkshire Terrier division which is small compared to the parent company is that most of the new fleet is hired from the supplier who also help maintain them so the running cost of the company are kept low. Also the colour scheme is similar to its Lincoln Company which it bought a few years ago so if it decided to close it can move the fleet without to many resprays being needed!!

Mass Transit are appalling. Ever driven down Walkley lane while one of their lumbering hulks is crawling up the other way? I've got used to the task of winding the windows up, closing the sunroof and all the air vents in about 3 seconds flat upon first spotting one of those smoke-churning old bangers.

I've not used a YT for a while, but they seemed OK. However a clean looking bus is no indication of the condition of the safety systems.

Funny you should mention that. I remember when Yorkshire Terrier first started out. They used to have some of the oldest, crankiest buses I've ever seen. How they could ever be considered road worthy is beyond me. These what they have not are in much better nick and newer.

Yes they used to have really old Leyland Nationals, belching out thick black clouds of diesel smoke all over sheffield, used to hate following behind one of those would completely choke you.

This webpage top picture shows Yorkie Terrier of Today and yesteryear. For those of you who never had the joy of traveling on or following one of the old terriers.

I see from reading the latest news on the vosa site that the number of buses Yorkshire Traction can operate on its licence has been reduced by 100 to 250 max. so no doubt the Barnsley area will see a cut back in service provision. The Terrier division is not affected by this fine from the Traffic Commission.

Also noticed that First SY have deregistered 'Don Valley Buses' which it brought a few years ago.

Other news is that TM travel are taking over several Derbyshire services from First who I guess must have lost the contract or a bit of downsizing going on.The services are:
70 (Sunday service / BH Mon) Chesterfield to Killamarsh
72 (Sunday service/BH Mon) Chesterfield to Crystal Peaks
and from 31st Oct service 181 (Sunday/BH Mon) Sheffield to Hartington via Holmesfield and Bakewell.
No changes to timetable.

We should know what First SY are doing in the way a changes due to take effect late October in the next couple of weeks via the vosa site.Watch this space!!!

Yorky Terriers are good buses, all new, most of them low floor, cheap prices.

And even though they run less services you always managed to get one of them than a First ! How does First do that ? :d

First are the champions at running buses in pairs ;)

Does anyone else remember about ten years ago, when Yorkshire Terrier had a cartload of ex-airport buses, that they used to run on the 120 route out between Halfway and the Hallamshire hospital?

I wonder what happened to them?

First are the champions full stop. A thoroughly superb company whose share dividends never cease to stop me having nice holidays in the sun!

That's exactly what I mean, First is only interested in its shareholders: never mind paying customers !

I cannot understand why shareholders would be so happy with the performance of First round here - they are not interested in growing the business, just cutting back. They are bleeding the remaining business dry and seem to be losing both staff and customers on mass!

The bits of network getting chopped off are going to other operators, with the smaller firms like TM Travel growing in size, and the vulture that is Stagecoach is standing on the sidelines ready to swoop and I'm sure are looking for ways of competing with First and taking their custom - They bought Aston, which has introduced new areas to Stagecoach, and I can see them buying either Terrier or TM should the opportunity arise, which could result in bus wars on the streets of Sheffield.....

My main concern is that I hope TM Travel don't over stretch themselves and cannot maintain its fleet of buses and leads to its downfall. This is what happen to Groves,SUT,Sheafline and Sheffield Ominbus. Sheafline nearly went to a Drawlane which I think came part of Arriva group and Mainline (Pre First) had a gentlemens agreement for the Sheffield & District (was part of West Riding ominbus) to pull out of of Sheffield it would sell them Compass Bus which it had set up in Wakefield as a low cost bus unit. Before First took full control of Mainline it had set up another low cost bus unit to buy up the small operaters in Barnsley however Yorkshire Traction bought them up and now operate under the Barnsley & District brand. So we could have had Arriva and First providing services if the out come had been different.

If Trackie fail to maintain its revised licence to operate and maintain 250 buses I think it will sell its South Yorkshire operations as follows: Yorkshire Traction/Barnsley and District to Stagecoach and Yorkshire Terrier to Arriva otherwise I think the M&M will say First have to much Market Share in South and West Yorkshire.
Trackie also nearly lost the contract to provide the coaches for National express services to London and Leeds because of poor maintainance
