Yipee summers on its way, so I was wondering if any members here are bikers and know of any regular ride outs that take place throughout the summer months. I ride a Honda Cbr 600rr so if there are any like minded people who enjoy regular ride outs around the peaks etc then get in touch.

Hi Dave, I used to run the Kawasaki Riders Club in this area. Although I am not involved any more the guys still meet at the Red Lion, Aston, first Monday of every month and have regular ride outs/foreign trips.
Open to any make of bike, very informal and a decent bunch of "mature" guys who all ride sports bikes in a brisk manner.

Always wanted to go along on one of these, but a bit intimidated by 'real' bikers. I ride a CBR600, and like going out for rides alone and with the Mrs on the back, sometimes briskly but not silly speeds, often happy to tootle around enjoying the scenery.

I'm not remotely interested in engines and sticking different exhausts etc. on my bike.

Is this ride out thing for the likes of me?

Everyone is welcome, in fact I have alot more respect for people with your attitude than say a biker who thinks he's Rossi. You have a great bike, and yeah your welcome, its not all about speed and taking risks, its about enjoying your time on the bike, all riders have different approaches to riding and we should all respect each others abilities.

Theres a great forum called www.cbr-forum.org.uk, its full of ........erm...........CBR riders from around Britain.

So our forth coming ride out is shaping up,

Cool, would be good to get out and about, as I'm new to the area so a guided tour is an added bonus.

The bike is in for a service at the moment, so I will be raring to go when I get it back, if a little light in the pocket.

Anyone else?

Great! Well theres some great runs out over the Peaks. Depends on what sort of milage we all want to do??

A good run is out towards Hathersage, over Winnets Pass, over to Chapel on the Frith, over to Glossop and then either the A57 Snake Pass or the A628 and A616 and A61 back to Sheffield.

Open to suggestions

Oh............and will it ever stop raining!!??

that route sounds great. Dont worry ZX, you're more than welcome. ride at your own speed and only do what you want to (sorry i dont mean to sound patronising just i have a lot of experience riding in large groups) we setting a rough date? I'm working away for the next fortnight, i'm back for a week then out for another fortnight. Nick.

Talking bikes....
Did anyone see the Traffic Police program the other night about the biker on the Stocksbridge by-pass. I was recording it but caught the last two minutes where it said the biker got 6 years inside. I thought that sounded a bit steep until I watched the whole program. Turns out he was drunk, drugged, doing 100mph +, badly worn brakes, weaving across the solid white lines, finally crashing, killing his girlfriend.
Gives us all a bad name.

Col S

08-04-2004, 15:29
Yeah, caught a bit of it, our lass was looking rather worried until they gave all the details of why they crashed as listed above.

Cbr Dave
08-04-2004, 18:35
Yeah same here, caught the end of it, heard the sentence and thought - poor bloke, then my girlfriend called me and told me why and how reckless he had been, stupid stupid bloke, feel sorry for the girls family, I would never forgive myself if I did something as dumb as that. There again I wouldnt do anything that dumb! Have a safe ride if you get out this weekend!

Anything been arranged yet ?
I'm on call this week but ok after that. Just put my bike together after a spring fettle so need to put some miles on it.
Also, bike needs an MOT next month. Any decent bike garages around. I used to take my bike up to Earnshaws of Huddersfield when I lived in Penistone but I live in Sheffield now.

Reading through this thread i'm tempted to go out a buy a bike but family commitments won't allow and though i have always wanted one, i probably never will.
Got to stick to the peoples carrier, but i envy you lot, so go out and enjoy the wind in your hair and take care.
Respect your bike and it will respect you.

Wishing i was there.

Hi all just been directed to this thread through those wonderful chaps from Google. Anyway I've just been and purchased myself a luvlly jubbly brand new Kwacker green ZX636R having decided to return to biking after an 8 year break. Being of the more mature flavour don't know any other bikers in the Sheffield area, would luv to buddy up with some of you guys for ride outs if thats OK. I'm still a bit rusty on my riding skills and am restricted to 60 mph whilst running in but safe and dead keen to get out and about again. Cheers Ralph

Hello there Kwakman - btw great choice in bike, just make sure you get loads of security on it, since you last rode, bike theft has shot up. Dont worry about the rust, I ride hard but never dangerous, dont/cant wheely so we just go at a pace that suits everyone.

Looks like we have enough riders for a ride out, I know I started this thread but I'm pretty cr*p at organising so if anybody wants to suggest a meeting place for Monday then feel free.

I think it best if we PM each other about meeting points/times

Kwakman
07-05-2004, 15:20
Hi Dave glad u like the bike, it came down to a choice between the Kwak and yours (CBR6RR) only deciding factor was the Kwak came in about £400 cheaper. Its got a Datatool system 3 alarm fitted seems to be quite sensitive, once its set if you f**t to clse to it, it goes of.

About a meet up, I've been down the Classic Rock Bar on Ecclesall Road a few times, it sounds about right for a bike meet and they have some great musicians and music down there if you're into rock of course. What does everyone reckon? Won't be able to make it till 8:45ish though and all subject to the weather coz getting drenched on a bike just don't float my boat.

Just seen this thread. I've only recently moved to sheffield (6wks ago). I've ridden the snake a few times... great road, but starting to become too familiar. If anyones up for going out for a ride then let me know. I've not been riding all that long, but got a decent number of miles under my belt. I've just bought a Blue Yamaha R6.

Cbr Dave
10-05-2004, 15:52
Yipee more bikers!! Welcome JohnC, hope your finding Sheffield ok!! We've got some great roads for ride outs once you've negotiated a safe path through the pot holes on the city roads that is!!

The snake pass is good fun but be careful out there on Sundays , too many plod in bushes for my liking!

Ive been in London working for a week so dying to get out on the bike, back tomo if you fancy a tour of the peaks early in the evening?? BTW where have you moved from?

Dave

JohnC
10-05-2004, 15:59
I've not seen any rozzers on the A57 yet... been lucky I guess!

Yeah - what's going on with the roads in and around Sheffield centre, its like riding offroad!

I've just moved up from Peterborough, a couple of good roads that way, but fairly flat!

I'll be up for a ride tomorrow as long as its not raining (again!)

Cbr Dave
10-05-2004, 16:24

See you all later on

Few ppl on the list there! Just hope the weather holds up. What's everyone riding?

Any idea on the route yet?

John.

Cbr Dave
11-05-2004, 09:38
oh and one of bobs mates on a duke 748 is also coming

re bikes

me and bob are on cbr6rr's (bobs is the clean one)
ralph has a kwakZX636R
Cols has got a triumph sprint
zxczxc has a gsxf750

god it looks cold out there!!

The route, mmmmmmmm, always gets me that question, me and bob have a run but think it might be a bit long.

owlerbar - baslow - hathersage - winnets pass - chapel en le frith - glossop - ladybower inn - sheffield

prob looking at about 2 hrs for all that

open to suggestions??

JohnC
11-05-2004, 10:22
Not too cold on the way to work this morning.

Route sounds good - I've only really been accross the A57, and through hathersage (the road that comes off near the ladybower inn).

How long have you been riding for? Have you been to any trackdays etc? Just slightly concerned I'll be left behind!

Cbr Dave
11-05-2004, 10:37
Nothing to be concerned about, we can set the pace to suit everyone, the more ppl the slower it gets anyway, everyone will be at diff levels, we have some rules on speed ie where speed limits are 30 we do 30 etc, we dont cross solid white lines to overtake and we should generally stay in the same order whilst riding and we always us indicators. Apart from that we have some fun and try and avoid the attentions of plod.

Ive only been riding on the road for a couple of years myself so I wouldnt worry about it too much. Never done a track day but seriously thinking about doing one, just affraid of dropping it!!

As its the first meet up, I guess we should not go too mad!

JohnC
11-05-2004, 10:49
Cool... I'm thinking about doing a trackday myself in the next few months. Everyone I've spoken to about it says it will benifit road riding and confidence no end. I found some trackday insurance, does add £80 odd to the cost of the day, but would probably be worth it for the first couple atleast....

Kwakman
11-05-2004, 14:53
Looks like I'm not going to be able to made the meet up tonight due to having a crap unsociable job won't be back home till 8:30 ish. Gonna be firing up the bike when I get home tho and prob do a cut down version of Daves route posted earlier. Out Thurs evening as well if anyone fancies a bit later ride out.

The track day idea sounds good I'm also a bit dubious about dropping it though. Might invest in a day at the Haslam Race school at Donington to get a bit of experience, they supply the bike and leathers, I'd rather use they're stuff than my own, bit pricey at £250 a shot tho.

claycraft
11-05-2004, 19:15
Ron Haslam Race School is a safe bet. Forget the extra £££'s, what price the pride and joy?
Anyone fancy a run tomorrow, weather pending? If so post tonight. I don,t keep the bike at home so it would be too late by the time I get home tomorrow, read the posts, then have to go and fetch the wheels!

5 of us went out for a spin last night so keep a look out for the next one.
Sorry to the others for slowing things down a bit (6 points on licence and other excuses...)

Cheers for the headsup on breaklights. I noticed it a week or so ago - but havent got the tools up in Sheffield to sort it out yet! I noticed that my breaklights don't come on when I use the rear break either!

Had a good ride last night - some really good rodes and a decent pace!

Anyone up for another one soon?

John.

Cbr Dave
12-05-2004, 15:04
I noticed that too John, but I forgot to mention it to you in my usual forgetful way!

Hey Cols, you wern't slow - what were the 6 points for??

Cant believe mark is a rozzer!!

Nice ride out anyway, whens the next one, it'll soon be winter!!

JohnC
12-05-2004, 15:39
Will sort that one out ASAP then... my steering head bearing seems to be a little slack aswell.... riding down that road through dronfield (speed bump after speedbump) surely didn't help either!!

Might have a bit of a ride out tonight - sun is finally out :)

Cols
13-05-2004, 08:31
6 points were for 2 speeding offences. Both in the car and in the last 18 months. Makes me a bit paranoid now.
You've probably seen me post the odd speed trap warning on the forum. Some people take offence at this, don't know why.
Which one was Mark, was he the Ducati rider ? I didn't hear him say he was a plod. Better be careful what we say :)

Kwakman
13-05-2004, 15:36

John, could be a sign that its been wheelied alot, i'd get it checked out.

Re speed humps, welcome to the epicentre of them, there everywhere in sheffield oh and watch out for the non bike friendly manhole covers that have usually sunk into the road especially the ones on the roundabouts!! lethal!!

Is Mark a bike copper though? If so, I don't fancy my chances in a chase.... but then again they normally ride BMWs on duty!

Can't believe how busy it is these days (for this time of year).
On saying that the last time I went, there were non of the new houses down by the old Squires cafe either.

I was waiting for someone to reply about that one... so I could work out what goes on at Sherburn aswell - what is Sherburn? An area of Sheffield?

Sherburn is Sherburn in Elmet its near York close to the A64 its famous for bike gatherings at the Milk Bar up there particularly Wednesdays.

Cols
14-05-2004, 16:44
Sounds like the kind of place I usually avoid. People popping wheelies, doing burn-outs etc and the police swarming round booking anything that moves. Like Matlock on a Sunday :)

Cbr Dave
14-05-2004, 18:09
Aaahhhh........the milk bar, well why didnt you say that......just kidding.....I have heard of it, never been and like Cols, I prob never will, not really bothered about a run to York from Sheffield, why bother when we have the best roads on our doorstep.

Saying that though...........I might be off to Chelsea bridge later, erm now actually, **** look at the time, gonna drive but it sounds like they do some crazy bike stunts down there every friday evening until the rozzers turn up anyway.

Four of us had a good run yesturday (Whiston-Sheff-Buxton-Cat and Fiddle-Macclesfield. Back along Cat-Buxton-Matlock-Clay Cross-Whiston-Home) only for me to find some theiving #$*% has had it away with one of my bar ends!
The replacments I bought from Clay Cross (Motrax Crash Protector type) are about half the weight of the O.E. items.
Although I presume this will be nominal, what, if any effect will this have on handling?
Why are bar ends weighted?

Cbr Dave
16-05-2004, 20:35
I doubt you will notice any difference but would get a new one on soon, they do look better than the originals but unless you look at reducing the weight significantly in all areas of the bike, then it will probably feel the same.

i have a fzr400rr uk spec. she has been stood for a while due to my job and not having the time to take her out. however i did get to go for a little run the other week and all was fine. was only a short run with my son on the back so was very gentle.tried to fire her up the other day and she was not a happy bunny. very lumpy and not on all cylinders . i have spent all today changing the plugs, draining the old petrol from tank and filter. put fresh petrol in and tried her. no joy. took bloody ages to fire up, and she is only on 2 cylinders. number 2 and 4 are out.getting a lot of back fireing and even blow back through numbers 2 and 4 carbs. at one point i slid open the slides and the mixture seemed to combust even though the engine was dead.

could someone please give me a starting point as to the problem

cheers

i have a fzr400rr uk spec. she has been stood for a while due to my job and not having the time to take her out. however i did get to go for a little run the other week and all was fine. was only a short run with my son on the back so was very gentle.tried to fire her up the other day and she was not a happy bunny. very lumpy and not on all cylinders . i have spent all today changing the plugs, draining the old petrol from tank and filter. put fresh petrol in and tried her. no joy. took bloody ages to fire up, and she is only on 2 cylinders. number 2 and 4 are out.getting a lot of back fireing and even blow back through numbers 2 and 4 carbs. at one point i slid open the slides and the mixture seemed to combust even though the engine was dead.

could someone please give me a starting point as to the problem

stuart I am probably the worst person to ask when it comes to such matters of mechanical diagnosis however Im sure there is a yamaha fzr riders forum that could help, I had a quick look but couldnt see anything obvious

No probs Dave - you've got my email/tel. no - just give me a buzz when you're up for a ride.

Rocks - you might want to check out www.r6messagenet.com it's devoted to the R6, but someone will almost definately be able to help you on there (go to the technical section).

Went for a ride out yesterday from the CMC Chesterfield shop... saw a note on their website about it. There was a fairly big group, probably 15 or so, which in the end divided into 2 due to speed/ability etc. Went down through the snake, got my brake pads smoking! time to replace I think!! Managed to keep up with the fast goup (so I don't think they were that fast....!).

If anyone fancys riding down that way next week I'll probably be heading down from Sheffield, they meet at 7pm every weds.

this was my first post.
have a fzr400rr uk spec. she has been stood for a while due to my job and not having the time to take her out. however i did get to go for a little run the other week and all was fine. was only a short run with my son on the back so was very gentle.tried to fire her up the other day and she was not a happy bunny. very lumpy and not on all cylinders . i have spent all today changing the plugs, draining the old petrol from tank and filter. put fresh petrol in and tried her. no joy. took bloody ages to fire up, and she is only on 2 cylinders. number 2 and 4 are out.getting a lot of back fireing and even blow back through numbers 2 and 4 carbs. at one point i slid open the slides and the mixture seemed to combust even though the engine was dead.

people were saying the prob was the carbs. well i removed the carbs and stripped them, they were clean but i cleaned all jets etc anyway. put back together and still wont start. the starter spins fine but the engine is only trying to catch every so often. i did check the spark on a plug by earthing it to the frame. though i have never done this befor i believe the spark to be very week, maybe so week as not to fire the engine. would this fit in with what i said in the first post. what could be the cause and how do i go about out.

Sorry rocks I dont have one and dont know anyone who has.

Fat lot of use I am!!

Had a bad moment the other day, overtaking a car doing 60 that decided to move out on me, ended up coliding my left side with his right, only just touched me but enough to **** me up alot and put me on a collision course with an oncoming car, had no choice but to keep the throttle on and that got me past him and back in to my lane. No damage to me or the bike surprisingly. I swear if his window had been down I could have stuck my head in his car.

Very close!!

Sounds like a poor spark. May need coil replacing. Or the HT leads but these are often integral with the coil.
You say you have earthed the plug and got a weak spark, well try earthing a plug from one of the "good" cylinders. Is it stronger?
If yes then swap the coils round and see if the problem is now in the other two cylinders. If yes, you need replacement coil from breakers.
Elimination is the only way to be sure.

andy , have been told that even a week spark would ignite the fuel, is this true or not.
how can i test the coils, they all give the same spark, week. i have no data or info/ manual for this bike. rather rare.

You say 2 & 4 cylinders are not firing properly, are they fed by the same coil? Follow the HT leads back from plug heads to coils. If they go into same coil it is too much of a coincidence to be anything else.

As I said before, swap the coils over and see if problem persists but this time on cylinders 1 & 3.

If 2 & 4 are fed by different coils it could be the HT leads.

Simplest solution is call out an auto electrician. If you have not sorted the problem after all this time it must be worth a few quid to get it fixed.

have a little voice in my head that says it may be a valve prob. looking back the last thing i did with the bike , well i think so anyway, was playing around in the back yard with it and seeing if i could do a burn out. you all know the stupid things we do sometimes.
well its not run since. i posted this on another forum and they say that doing this type silly thing puts extra strain on the engine etc. if the engine was not 100% anyway this would speed thing up faster than normal riding. ie maybe a valve was not sitting right but normal riding was not enough to cause agro. doing a burn out was and so the dead engine and ****** off me. if this is the answer to my prob then i will be calling myself a ****** for doing it........

we live and learn............................................. well sometimes

Hi Dave,

Should be about next week, been out a fair bit, getting up to speed now!

Yeah moved to the city centre, my appartment isn't finished (builders.... need I say more!), so they've put me in a temporary one until its finished - got a decent balconey with this one.

Cols, not sure if they do MOTs aswell, but national tyres in barnsley are very reasonable.

Try Cusworths, they can arrange the MOT at the same time as your new sticky's are done - not sure how much they come in at, but they seem to be a tadge pricey for everything, Ive got a 10% discount card your welcome to borrow from me.

You could try Hillsborough Motorcycles, it's close enough to Cusworth if distance is of consideration. Not sure about MOTs but they do tyres, at least fixed my rear flat a while back.

What is it with nails on the road etc in this country? I've had two flats in this year already.

To introduce myself, I bought a '97 BMW F650 last year to get my mind off my divorce and been riding around alone since. At the moment I'm thinking of selling since I got speedtrapped on the A629 twice in one week ... I don't have a UK license, so can't get points, so they might well drag me to the magistrates and I'm not too keen on that more than once.

I find the english speed enforcement system pretty ridiculous. The cameras are absolutely everywhere and unless you're familiar with the locality (so it seems to me), it's hard to tell if that road is a 40 or a 30 now. I got caught now twice at 38/39 respectively ... *shakes head*

That'd be £120 + 6 points if I could get points. Probably gonna be more than that eventually, which is another beef I have that the system discriminates against non-UK citizens (if they're gonna prosecute me).

Anyway, to come to a bottomline ... I'd like to attach myself to some people to ride out. Would certainly help to have some local intelligence to lead the way. If there's noone willing to take a mad austrian under their wings, I'll likely sell the bike before the summer's over :P

If by Gatso you mean those yellow boxes, then the latter. That's pretty much my point ... if I know the area, then it's not really a problem. But new areas ... I just don't seem to get the rationale behind some speed zones. For instance, why is Penistone road a 30? No residential areas, schools or whatnot closeby, two to three lanes. Whatever ...

It was just out of Huddersfield both tdimes.
Got one of those w/ me still ... says A629 Wakefield Road Junction Grosvenor Road Huddersfield.
Anyway... Nothing can be done ...

yippeeeee...the beast is back up and running. after long days of pulling hair out, kicking and punching things the bitch is running again. went through all the tech stuff, cleaning carbs, checking for loose wires, checking spark, new plugs, new battery etc etc etc. someone from one of the other forums offered to have a look at her, he went through all the stuff i had to make sure i had checked things right etc. he is a whiz with fzrs as he races them and even he was stumped.check the plugs again he said, i did , as i was putting the lead back on he said hold on , they are on wrong. it turned out the ht leads were mixed up. what i cant understand is why it ran when i bought it, and i have not swopped anything since. it is as i bought it. then it just refused to run, put the leads as they should be and she fired up.

go figure that one....

jeez john.........500 miles!! what are they made off? leather??

I got 208's on my rr, real nice!! let me know a make and model and I will ask around on some other forums, can usually get a good price on them. Are you fitting new front at the same time?

18-06-2004, 14:40
I hope that was a typo and you meant 5000 miles......

Bike is in Wizards as we speak for tyres and MOT. Gone for the Dunlop 207's. Hope these last a bit longer than the 4000 miles from the Bridgestones BT57's.

Col

JohnC
18-06-2004, 15:55
Nope... 500!! They are stupidly soft compound though... the guy at National said I'd be lucky to get 750 miles out of them, I thought he was joking!

Dave, I was thinking of getting some 208's aswell either them or the pirelli super corsa's. Let me know if you can get a reasonable price on a pair.... (front is squaring off a bit, been on for a while!).

I've read plenty of reviews... I think the Dunlop 208rr's are probably the best compromise in terms of durability and grip.

Got the Dunlop 207's but not the super sticky ones. it would break my heart if I didn't get at least 4000 miles out of a tyre. They cost £200 + fitting. Probably cheaper at a tyre specialist but it was convenient and got the MOT done at the same time.

Came like that from the factory, only a handful of them in the uk. He's had a white surround but around the headlights and he's currently waiting for his sigle seat conversion to arrive. The reason theres no stickers on it is because he's taken the original 749 ones off and is waiting for some custom Ducati Performance ones to come.

Definatley with you on that one, baffles out and everyone hears you coming, makes a huge diff when filtering through but I still get the odd nerd who thinks nothing of sharing a lane with a bike.

I went for a titanium akraprovic slip on with removable baffles (removed of course). Got a great deal from a "man with a dog"

I also tidied up the rear with a carbontek tidy and put some diddy cators on there too then shrunk my number plate. I really am asking for a tug, especially with no number plate light anymore!

Changed the hoses too, goodridge braided, I cant really notice any diff, the brakes have always been sharp but it does look tidier.

Anyways pass on my regards to those great country roads next time your out on them, I'll carry on playing chicken on the M25

WHOA there Dave! Sounds like you've been giving the plastic a pre Christmas bashing already:thumbsup:, although it sounds pretty much like my winter project.

Titanium Venom can (fitted already [no baffles included:wink:].)

Rhencullen Topline undertray (£250+ worth for just over a ton on ebay:clap:. It's got rear tail light and indicators built in [both about the size of gnats nads] with a small perspex strip to light the plate].

Have you seen the LEDs you can get for reg plate illuminations?
Its a small block about an inch/inch n half long you simply attach and wire up!

Also recently obtained a rear subframe with o/e plastic undertray included (again ebay) which I can butcher instead of my original bits.

Problem I've had is finding a number plate (7x5.5 on its way:wink: ) hanger to attach to tray. However I think I may be able to overcome this with a Motrax rsend number. Its bike specific to the Duke 749/999 but I dont want to bodge the end result with a tacky bit of angle iron the likes of which I was offered at the NEC(Powerbronze double bubble blue matrix irridium screen, £20 off) recently.

Almost forgot mini flush winkers for the front end.

So I guess I've got a busy winter ahead (keeps ya mind off the greasy, slushy, snowy, grit laden roads:()

After all that, I guess I'll see you in the local nick or courts come next summer:D

This is true.

I'm in the AA with the Option 200 cover.
This allows me to be either taken home or to any destination of my choice (eg a local garage of my choosing, not some backwater grease monkeys shed in the middle of nowhere who's gonna rip my eyes out, or worse:shocked: ).

Costs about £90 per year.

My car and van I can lock up and leave but I wouldnt fancy the bikes chances out of sight for more than 0.5 secs:evil:

As Bikertec states it's yourself that's covered, not the vehicle so this extends to other motors even if your the passenger:thumbsup:

Well worth it for the piece of mind.
Had em out on three occasions (never for bike) and they were prompt plus got me sorted at the roadside.

Don't want to sound negative, but I think you need to invest in a good toolk it and a few books on how to use it.

A well maintained bike, even an old one, rarely breaks down. And if it does, 90% of the time you ought to be able to be able to 'bodge' your way home and then fix the problem properly at your leisure.

Hi everyone, read the (very long) thread... all good stuff! I've got a GSX-R600... Used to have a ZX-6R and a TL1000 (what a motor, what bad suspension! Ha ha..) Thought I' go ack to a nippy in-line 4. I've missed revs!

Anyways... been searching for bikers for rides. Got a website up and running now - doing ride outs from/in/around sheffield in the fine up coming months. If anyone's interested it's www.globalsuperbikes.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

feedback anyone?
Hope to see ya'll soon

Sounds good Pete, shame it wasnt last year when I lived in Sheffield otherwise I would have been there. All I do now is dodge death each morning and night on the M25, no fun in that! Mind you, its easier to take wing mirrors off down here! Not that they would miss them since they never look in them! he he!

I'm sure the other fella's will be up for it!!

Passed my motorbike test a year ago, enjoy going out on my bike, when the weather is nice, and now just wondering other than the biker mecca - Matlock, where else makes a good day out on the bike?

SHarper
13-03-2005, 16:24
Hiya Billie, if its a short evening blast, out through Castleton, up Winnits, Buxton, down A6, left upto Monsall Head for a shandy, onto A625 to Baslow, up to Oller bar roundabout, back to Sheff.

The Cat and fiddle is a road you ought to be aware of, from Buxton over to Macclesfield,(be careful).

A few pubs in the area have "bike nights".
Monday is "The Grey Goose", at Gedling (near Nottingham)
Tuesday is Scarcliff on the other side of Clowne
Wednesday is Sherburn-in-helmet, towards York
Thursday is Carbrook Hall(I think)

Will try and think up some more........

As SHarper says the Cat & Fiddle Pub is usually thronged with bikers in the summer. Be very very careful on this road as many bikers are killed on it every year. I used to drive along it regularly and it is absolutely stunning when the weather is nice.

Bikertec
13-03-2005, 17:09
I would recommend you keep away from the cat and fiddle now not because of the road because the police love to make extensive revenue from this road. Love to pull you over for anything not just speeding, but loud cans, Tyres, numberplates too small or wrong font ect.

SHarper
13-03-2005, 17:20
That is very true, the rozzers are all over the place, but they can't be every-where at once.
The A616 from Clowne to Newark can be fun (as you come into Newark go over the bridge and call for a drink on the Barge that's moored there) and if you're going there, you might as well bob over to Gainsborough on to Market Raisen and pick up the A18 (wahoo) to Skeg-vegas.
Thats it! New front tyre in as soon as its ****ed it down for a couple of days to wash the salt away.....

The rideout will last a few hours (inc a stop for a warm drink somewhere along the way!)

N.B OUR RIDEOUTS AND EVENTS ARE FREE!

All welcome. Check out our website.
Ride out will take place unless wet weather forces us to cancel. (Nobody wants to ruin their pride and joy / their own body on wet slippery roads).

Hi again all,
yes the weather looks decent this moring, so be at the Norton Pub for 11am sharp for an 11.05am 'set off'.
For those that don't know, the Norton Pub is very easy to get to - it's the one beside the big roundabout at Norton (surprisingly); from town centre follow Chesterfield road (as if your going towards the Dronfield bypass) all the way up and it's on your left hand side (there's a petrol station on the opposite side (handy, eh)). Hard to miss it.
Follow the link here if you're unsure: (it's on the roundabout where the blue pointer marks Norton and Greenhill Beauchief):

Once in glossop take the main round about town centre right turn this will cut out the rest off Glossup and take you back onto the woodhead back to Sheffield. If you feeling adventurest turn right just before Stocksbridge and go over the Strines (but becarefull lots off very slow corners) this will bring you back on the Snake just before Riverlin.

The Strines road is also rather "undulating", which some of my friends aren't that keen on...

...no problem on a Ten' though Billie.

Another option at the Glossop traffic lights is to turn left instead (there's nice cafe there) up over the moors (on the A624) to Chapel-on-le-Frith, from there you can either cut back to Castleton and home, or carry on to Buxton, and ultimately the Cat & Fiddle.

:) Yep until you get used to the Strines it is a bit hairy inplaces used to start Outibridge through Bradfield over the strines through Stocksbridge then back to Outibridge and home to Foxhill. Nice little afternoon ride Strines pub is a nice place for a drink too (but would't recomend the food). By the way there is a big ride out Sun 26th June upto know over 30 diversions from all over the UK but everyones welcome Starting at Claycross I believe.

Cool guys, ta for the info. Lemme know any events coming up, if anyone knows of any sale events too that would be great - heard about one in Pontefract but I missed it, friend of a friend went on the last day and bought Shoei leathes for £50 and a 'last season' Arai helmet for £50 too!!! As a tall bird I'm having trouble getting leathers to fit, might have to have some made - mens are too bulky and big on the waist and womens are too short in the leg/arms, been to CMC, Carnells, Crusader - think of any more places? Think theres a new shop opened in what used to be Marples?? Might have a neb there in my lunch hour. Laters :)

No way, Dukes, R1's, Gixers are not the only bikes that are cool!

I chose not to buy an R1 as tempting as it was for this season.

I decided to go supermoto, and wow, what fun!

With a little more practive, I might be stopping at traffic lights on the front wheel, and leaving them on the back wheel

26-04-2005, 15:05
Yeah Venger it's unusual to see girls on a bike, unless they're on the back rather than being left at home every nice day. In fact, I don't remember seeing any girlies on their own bikes apart from one friend of mine - she's a nutter, she's got an R1 but she lives in Winchester. I decided to take my test when I split with the ex cos it's something wicked you can do on your own.
Think I need to go on a motorcycle maintainance course so I know a clutch basket from a top box!! Don't even know where to put the oil in mine!! Thats another thing - I need to get it serviced, was gonna take it to that place opposite CCC off Bramall Lane, they did the MOT and seemed ok.
While we're here, wotcha reckon would be a nice tall sports-tourer? Think I'll do this summer on my single cylinder Tenere then maybe get something a bit more grown up, so I need to have a good idea what I want so I can keep a beedy eye out.

Check out Visordown.com (http://www.visordown.com/forums/index.php?) for some varied feedback.

I am usually found in the supermoto section only, but there is allsorts on there and can prove quite useful.

My advice would be check out some road tests.

Have a couple of test rides.

Speak to people on that or similar forums :)

While we're here, wotcha reckon would be a nice tall sports-tourer?

Well I've got a ZZR600 now after my last bike, a CBR400RR "MiniBlade". I loved the 400 to bits (almost literally ;-), but I ended up doing a lot of long distance miles on it and the riding position did my back in, so I went straight for the most comfortable 600 I knew about. A bit of a change, and a bit heavy, but I wouldn't change it for the world right now. I suppose it depends on the mix of sports and touring you're likely to do, I'm definitely more touring than sports if you see what I mean.

As for good rides, I don't really know as I'm new to the area, though I agree Snake Pass was fun, but I still do mostly motorway miles, as my \_/ shaped tire shows. A628 (Woodhead?) might have been a bit of fun, but I've only done it when it was pi**ing down and I couldn't see jack with rain on my specs and visor.

I've only just passed my CBT (I can hear you chuckling) and i'm just starting my 'proper' lessons to go on to take my test, i've just got my first bike, a Kawasaki Eliminator (I was built for comfort, not for speed).

I'm another 'just a girl' lol, but i'm still really into my bikes, I was brought up with them, indeed I was nearly born in a side-car :D

Billie, you were saying about going to a motorbike mechanics course, well Castle college do them, i've been looking into going myself.

I realise I'd have no chance of keeping up with any of you 'big kids' just yet...but once i've got me a real ride i'll definately be up for some meets!

As a newbie, i'd appreciate any advice/tips etc too :)

ooh, I was talking to a friend today, and apparently a keen biker has just taken over the Horse & Jockey pub up near Wadsley Church, and he's turning the back into camping pitches etc for bikers riding thru to stay over etc...

I haven't been in for a good few years to tell the truth, but it did used to be one of my haunts (fondly known as the 'Strap')

Ooh..I got my first 'Nod' Today off a biker going in the other direction...he obviously didn't spot the L plates till too late!! :D

The weather seems reasonably acceptable this evening anybody venturing out?

It's bike night at the Anchor, near Ripley.

Through Clay Cross into a village called Shirland, turn right on first bend after pub ( heading for Belper ), follow road for about 5 miles, Anchor on right, can't miss it about 200 bikes outside...

 Helooooo. I'm a member of the Three Shires Branch of the HOC (Honda Owners Club) and we meet at the Travellers Pub just off junction 35 (M1, Chapeltown) on Monday nights. We have regular rideouts (tomorrow is Devils Bridge) and anyone who has owned a Honda (or is thinking of owning one) is welcome to join us regardless of what you ride now with no obligation to join (but we would love you to).

We're not fast (but we aint slow either) and cater for all levels of competency so if you fancy having a look, come to the pub or better yet join us on a rideout (tomorrow, Sunday 3rd, is meeting at the snackbar in the layby at Junc 35a M1 at 8am for a 8:30am start).

If you need any more info, let me know and ps, we are currently looking for members to go on the stand at the NEC (you get in for FREE) for a few hours.
Spitty.

Good morning peeps.

Today I is mostly off to find a waterfall to stand under Timotay style. It involves a ride up and onto the Woodhead, then a gentle amble up a valley, anyone up for it?

Any brave souls up for the Rock and Blues festival this week-end?

Its not too far away, Pentrich, on the way to Belper from Clay Cross, (turn right after the first pub coming into Shirland). Some great bands on (and some not so great), lots going off.

Anyway if anyones there, and wants to meet up, we are camped at the bottom of row L and can be caught doing our favourite rally past-time of sitting, drinking, smoking and talking $h1te........

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Just been rearended whilst sat at a roundabout waiting to join it, managed to keep it upright but only just, looked back and theres this girl holding her head mouthing "Sorry" at me!!

She reversed out from between my rear tyre and exhaust so I could walk the bike to the kerbside, exchanged details and she admitted liability.

Bike needs new exhuast, lights, tail tidy, numberplate and possibly new swingarm if bent??

There goes my fun for the summer!! :-(

Get on to your insurers and tell them that she's admitted liability. Also point out that you NEED your bike for transport, it's not just a fun toy (even if it is) and that you want it back on the road asap.

If you have fully comp. insurance you may find that your company will stand the damages for you while they chase her insurance company for a payout.

I had a similar experience a couple of months back when another bike went in to the back of me at a junction.

I didn't sit around waiting for others, I got the parts myself, got my mate to fix it and chased the guy for the damages.

Good luck with it and the best way to look at today is that at least no one was hurt. If you walk away from a motorcycle crash then it's better than leaving one in an ambulance (I know, I've tried it and it hurts!)

Cheers Lalaland, alls good, the driver admitted liability to the insurance company and I have had the quote approved by her insurers, all being well I should be back on the bike at the end of the week! alot quicker than I thought, BTW she was with Norwich Union and they couldnt have sorted it any quicker.

So I'm getting a new swingarm, tailtidy, mini indicators, showplate and exhaust plus £15 a day to cover my alternative travel expenses until the bike is back with me.

Happy days and means I wont need to cancel my trackday at Brands next week!!

OH how I miss the warm, sticky roads of summertime:cry:

Roll on next year:clap:

Fair weather rules:thumbsup:

So we wait all year for the good weather and what do we get? Corners gritted in July due to the tarmac bubbling merrily away:evil:

Roll on Autumn: Damp, soggy, slippy leaf strewn roads:mad:
Roll on winter: Icey, wet grit strewn roads(somewhat akin to the Summer):x
Roll on Spring: Incessant rain:rolleyes:

Makes you wonder why we bother!...................................BECAUSE WE LOVE IT:thumbsup::clap::D

Not on the roads that's for sure:nono:

Locally there are a few places in Doncaster, although you'll need some form of trailer/van etc to get the bike there.
Good luck anyway, have fun:thumbsup:

The New Norfork pub on manchester road, riverlin is now under new managment, bikers will be given a real welcome as the landlady is herself a biker. pub grub teas and coffees and all the other snacks and drinks available, with offers for bikers on most of the food and tea and coffee, bike meets and events are in the pipeline and anyone wanting to hold an event at the pub will be made most welcome. the pub has been left to its own devices for far too long and now its time to make it a bikers haven, rock music it by the order of the day, although we can cater to most tastes as long as its rock, rock or errrrmmm rock. tel 01142309253

yep, shaz who now runs the new norfork, is tryin to cater for most peoples tastes. includin a veggie menu. her home made meat and potato pie is amazin, and ya get loads too. so ya dont feel ya need to order another meal just to fill ya up. and call it greed on my part but i hate it when ya order food and a plate the size of a saucer arrives with a burger the size of a smartie on it. hope to see ya there some time:thumbsup:
