View Full Version : Walk round High Green and Wortley 21st October
Well here goes! Encouraged by Taxman I`m proposing A 6/7 mile circular walk, starting from High Green and going thro Westwood Country Park and Wortley Park through to Wortley, and then on towards Wharncliffe Crags and back to High Green via a village called Howbrook.
I`ve done the walk myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. There are great views from the top of Woodhead Road across Barnsley towards Ferrybridge power station, and also across towards Stocksbridge and down to Tinsley.
There is a pub in the middle of Wortley, but unfortunately its shut for refurb at the moment.:-( There is however a tea-room there which is open Sat and Sun.Pubs will be open in High Green I`m sure. All welcome back to my place for a cuppa at the end, I`m at the start and the end of the route!
Bus no 77 from the Interchange or 75 which starts at Bradway comes to High Green via Arundel Gate run hourly Sundays, more regularly Saturdays.I`ve got the times.
The walk is varied. Lots of fields, not much proper pathway, only 2 hills Feargal, and steady ones at that! Might get muddy tho if its been raining.Hope ppl are interested, it`d be worth coming to see Wortley Hall, the home of the Earl of Wharncliffe.
2 questions:
What day?
Are dogs welcome?
depends what day ppl want.
dogs very welcome
Saturdays would suit us best
great about the dog!
Well, sorta promised Taxman that if his beloved Barnsley (0) are at home, that we might make it Sunday! But lets see what ppl want first. Barnsley FC might have to cancel!
Cheers Scubz
If you are thinking of the weekend 21st / 22nd then I'm free both days
Right then folks. Following the Walkers meet tonight (Thursday) it has been decided that this walk will take place next Saturday, the 21st at 11.00, meeting place High Green Health Centre, Thompson Hill, High Green. For anyone arriving by bus, its the stop immediately after the bus tuns left at High Green crossroads. There is also parking on the road for anyone arriving in their own car.
Approximate duration of the walk is 3 hours, please wear suitable footwear for walking on muddy fields.

thanks for your support all who have said you`re coming, come on, come on, all those who`re still thinking!
there`s parking on the main road Tess, just find High Green Health Centre and park opposite, I`ll be there early and watch ouy for your car. Anyone arriving by bus, the 88 is the best one cos they leave Arundel Gate every 10 mins. Ask for the crossroads at High Green and look for me when you get off (Old man with stick!)
Sounds like a rather cool walk. See you there !
Thanks Scubz for mentioning parking, my mum lives in High Green so we're quite familiar with the area but thanks :)
So whose going? So far

Sorry Scubz, I didn't make that clear, I was wondering about dogs being allowed in Wortley Hall

Right, sorry tess, didn`t get it lol. Don`t think anybody`s allowed in the hall, you just look at it from the outside!

Are you and everyone else arriving by bus ok with the times and routes?
purdyamos 18-10-2006, 22:55 Are you and everyone else arriving by bus ok with the times and routes?
Scubz, are you sure it's the 75? I looked up the timetable and the 75 stops at Lane Top. The 76 goes to High Green. Is that right, or have the Transport exec printed them wrong way round? That route's cool for me, by the way. It goes direct from Sharrow.
Don't know who all the other bus candidates are. But I'll be there. :)
And lets just be sure, we have all been invited back to Scubz's afterwards for tea and cake, yes?
Will your dog be okay with ours Scubz? If you want we can put ours back in our car

Taxman really! Wouldn`t have thought you were a tea and cake man. The offer of a cuppa was aimed at the normal(ish) folk coming! There`s beer already in the fridge for you mate! But if you`re on your day of abstainence, tea, or coffee will be available! However, as a single man, cakes don`t exist in my life, so it`ll be biccys instead I`m afraid!

Don`t worry about my dog Tess, 6/7 miles is too far for her although if my daughters knocking about I might get her to bring her in the car to the 1/2 way point, to come back with us. If she does that, there`ll be no problem, I`ll be keeping her on the lead anyway. Incidentally, there are long stretches where you can let yours off the lead, there`s just a small part where there`s sheep and believe it or not a partridge farm!

Mine will be pleased! I did wonder if she would have do be on the lead due to sheep and the like.
purdyamos 19-10-2006, 21:25 Scubz, could you please check and confirm you've got the right bus number for High Green?
