We're using one for our mortgage and have bee impressed so far. He earns commision from the lenders and any insurance. His name is John Shaw - anyone heard of him or used his services? Or has anyone used an IFA before and had any problems/recommendations?

i'm a-using one at the moment, it's taken a lot of the stress away. nothing has gone wrong yet, so i'm all for it. he's earning a 0.03% commission for his trouble. it isn't the guy you're using though.

I had a problem with one who was declaring to be an independent financial adviser, he had numbers stated on letterheading and looked the real thing. He got a mortgage sorted for me. It was only later on when I wanted to pay some accounts off he wanted me to pay him personally as he said that he would become liable for the debts as he was handling stuff for me (to take the pressure of me he said and at the time I was grateful for that offer). When he asked me to make a cheque payable to him so he could pay off everything I got suspicious, when I checked it out things certainly werent as they seemed and he wasnt registered. Im just so glad I didnt give him anything and came into my senses!

i have used one for years, Colin at the mortgage network in hackenthorpe, he changes my mortgage every 2 years so i always get the best rate. he is really great and always sorts things out, he even sorted out all my insurances when i bought my first house and i trust him 100%.I always know that as soon as i've called him he gets onto the problem immediately and i never have to chase him. as with the others, i don't pay him, he gets his commission from the lenders. There are so many companies out there with so many complicated policies and loopholes etc, its good to know that someone who understands it all is working in my best interest and not just trying to sell me something to meet their weekly target.

I've used a financial adviser and my partner and friends have also, if they are recommended by anyone it's definitely worth it! Whether it's mortgages, pensions, or investments, using a good adviser can be of great help and does take a lot of stress out, particularly with the complexities of buying a property.

We've just recently seen a financial advisor, he's saved us over 1% on our mortgage, and by combining all our insurances into one policy we have more cover now, for roughly half what we were paying. He did charge us for his help but it's worth every penny.
