View Full Version : The Great Lullaby Thread
lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 21:57 YAY! Been meaning to do this for a while and finally got around to it. Please post all your favourite ones here, including ones you have made up.
Lullabies are great and serve several purposes:
*They help the child into dreamyland.
*They soothe frazzled parents when we sing them.
*They help to create lovely childhood memories for our children when they are older.
*They are a great way of showing children our love.
*They are a living thing, not a CD or a tape. A song is alive.
The first one is Hushabye Mountain, from the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and it's just beautiful. When Felix first asked for me to sing it, I cried. And I cried the first few times I sand it to them. (oh alright, I still cry right at the end....). They both love it.
lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 21:58 Hushabye Mountain
A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain
Softly blows o'er Lullaby Bay.
It fills the sails of boats that are waiting--
Waiting to sail your worries away.
It isn't far to Hushabye Mountain
And your boat waits down by the key.
The winds of night so softly are sighing--
Soon they will fly your troubles to sea.
So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain.
Wave good-bye to cares of the day.
And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain
Sail far away from Lullaby Bay.
Jabberwocky 07-10-2006, 22:00 "Go to sleeeeeep
Go to sleeeeeeep
Or I`ll pummel your skull in
Go to sleeep
Go to sleeeep
Or I`ll poke out your eyes."
Ahhhh Good times...
lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 22:01 Train Whistle Blowing
Train whistle blowing, makes a sleepy noise
Underneath the blankets, go all the girls and boys
Rockin' rollin' ridin'
Out along the Bay
All bound for Morning
Ttown
Many miles away
Driver's at the engine
Fireman rings the bell
Sandman swings the lantern
To show that all is well
Rockin' rollin' ridin'
Out along the Bay
All bound for Morning Town
Many miles away
Somewhere there is sunshine
Somewhere there is rain
Somewhere there is Morning Town
Many miles away
Rockin' rollin' ridin'
Out along the bay
All bound for Morning Town
Many miles away
All bound for Morning Town
Many miles away

lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 22:09 The Night Night Song
I made this one up. It one starts at middle C and goes up and down the scale. In Sound of Music-speak it would go:
Doh Reh Mi Far So Far Mi Reh Doh
Doh Reh Mi Far So Far Mi Reh Doh
Then it starts at upper Doh and comes back down
Doh Doh Ti Ti La La So
La La So So Far Far Mi
then back down to
Doh Reh Mi Far So Far Mi Reh Doh
It's time to go to bed my sleepy head
Time to go to bed your Mummy (Daddy) said
Time for climbing up the stairs
Time to say your night night prayers
It's time to climb into your cosy bed.
The child add a top C 'bing' at the end as it makes us all laugh. But that's optional.
lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 22:10 Nice ones Tish. Our babysitter sings I'll Never Let You Go by Donny Osmond 'cos her mummy sang it to her. The children love it.
The kids were laughing at me the other night because I was trying to remember and sing an african lullaby I learnt and couldn't get past the first line. They thought it was hilarious so that didn't help them get to sleep.
lizzmobile 07-10-2006, 23:21 Heh! if you remember it ever, I'd love to learn it! I have a few French ones I could teach you.
Deal, I have the sheet music for it I think.
cosywolf 10-10-2006, 11:18 We have a family lullaby that goes back and back, and when I sing it, I am taken right back to being curled up in my Mum's lap while she rocked in the rocking chair and sang to me. And just knowing that she sang it to me, my grandmother sang it to my father, etc, makes it even more special to me...
That tiny turned up nose
two cheeks just like a rose
so sweet from head to toes
that little boy (girl) of mine
He climbs up on my knee
he means the world to me
to me he'll always be
that little boy (girl) of mine
No-one will ever know
just what his coming has meant
he must have been heaven sent
because I love him so
that little boy of mine
As for Farmman, he sings 'It's the end of the world as we know it' to the boy, and always has since the first night we brought him home from hospital and he realised nothing was ever going to be the same again, lol.
another one I sing is
Who's got a button nose
ten little tiny toes
and a sticky out ear
who's got the sweetest smile in the world
and a face that's oh so dear
(kind of to the tune of waltzing matilda. Ish)
My son used to love " i dont care what the weather man said "
My daughter loves, You are my sunshine :)
My lullaby and rocking song with niecelet isn't really a lullaby- it's 'Prayer to St Valentine' which is a love song instead (as recorded by Sweetmouth).
Most things that are familiar and comforting work as lullabies- I don't think the words matter much (although I had to stop singing 'Don't get married' because there's a verse about strippers- just to be on the safe side!).
My son has always been comforted by 'Rock-a-bye baby' which is strange given the lyrics.
The best song for cheering up a grumpy baby has been the theme from Rainbow:
Up above the streets and houses,
rainbow climbing high,
Everyone can see it smiling
over the sky.
Paint the whole world with a
rainbow.
All along the streams and rivers,
shining in the lakes,
See the colours of the rainbow
as the morning breaks.
Paint the whole world with a
rainbow.
doo doo doo do-doo doo doo doo do-doo etc
always guarantees a smiley baby in our house.
