Where about on the cross.... the flowers may look nice but.... there was a reason for the demolition.... The flowers make all the open space look nice like the open fields of yesterday b4 the houses were built.... then along came the chavs to spoil it all.

Acutally, the houses on Pason Cross would have been very different when they were first built. Council Housing was actually very expensive to rent. Many of the poorer people back in the 1930's would have been living in private rented accommodation.
In the 1930's, you have to have been on quite a good income to get one of these houses.
It was only during the 1970's and 1980's that Council housing became stigmatised. As local authorities struggled to rent out some of their houses, their lettings policies had to change so as to ensure that they could have some rents coming in!
Parson Cross looks so different now with many of the houses demolished. It will be interesting to see what the new houses will look like.
Jabberwocky 07-10-2006, 17:01 I heared that in summer there now, all over the Cross, poppies are growing.
The seeds were there since before the estate was built and now the ground has been disturbed the seeds are growing.
I did a check and found that poppy seeds can live for more than a century in the ground without germinating.

Id say Adlington & buchanan way mostly
Its not often I give the council credit, but it does look a lot better now than last time I saw it a few years back
What reason did the council give for all the demolition?
As for the chavs ruining it all thats virtually every council estate, I personally would love to have hardly any neighbours and be surrounded by wildflowers!

There is a few poppys & a lot of other different flowers but I'd say councils sowed a lot of them
I saw these when I was in the area a few weeks ago, I was really struck by how beautiful they were, whoever came up with this idea should feel really proud of themselves. One of the most beautiful sights I have seen in a long time, it would be good to do this wherever there is waste land. Does it happen elsewhere?

These wild flowers are sown after demolition as they don't need looking after (grass needs mowing) and they look beautiful! Has anyone seen the sunflowers on Wordsworth Avenue?
I'm suprised the chavs haven't been selling bunches of the flowers for a quid per bunch in the Cross:hihi:
On a serious note, yeah i have seen them too and they give the area lots of colour, they do look lovely i must admit.

Not seen it anywere else, but I heard that this started in Sheffield when the councils demolishion of most of its housing stock started, and they thought it would be a good idea to WildFlower the sites instead of just leaving it as wasteland.

bluesandtwos 09-10-2006, 18:57 All for it!, If you have an empty open space, why not sow wild flowers on it :). Looks nice!

Whats the future plans / ideas re:demolishion site???
I went on the tram through Arbourthorne last week and the same had happened there where they knocked down those big tower blocks. Absolutely beautiful to see!

Hope their not plastic ones?
Tigercub 11-10-2006, 21:58 I often drive through the area on my way to/from work and I think the flowers look really nice. They really cheer the place up but it's a shame the houses have gone when so many people wanted them.

It won't last long, - the council will be selling the sites to 'spec' developers for blocks of flats.

if so many people wanted the houses why did they pull em down?
Tigercub 11-10-2006, 22:08 Will be a reall mish mash of houses and people, just hope they will all gel together.
Tigercub 11-10-2006, 22:09 They pulled them down because it was cheaper than modernising them all. Plus they are trying to get rid of housing stocks. I believe government offering incentives for new builds.
King Rat 11-10-2006, 22:16 Up until recentley I remember going up there about 5 years back to have a house on Deerlands somethin? and thinking this place looks a bombs hit it boarded up houses everywere rubbish dumped everywere & No sign of demolishin
Friends of ours just recentley moved theirand think its great
I just wish i could live their now
SHANE-D-PAIN 11-10-2006, 23:00 They look really nice. I get the bus to college next to them and I think it's a great thing to ttake the place of the houses that were there before. I just hope they are around for a long time.
I know I am opening up an old thread but are the wildflowers still there and are they flowering?
Id like to go and see them........ are there any more apart from the ones on Buchanan and Adlington road.
i live on buchanan have one for 20 years we overlook the park and the patch of land with the flowers is beside us, really beautiful to look at, better than just leaving the land as a muddy patch. No doubt though it wont stay forever sheffield council will see to that.
spritulist 13-05-2009, 12:08 the day i drove pasted kids where picking them the had a nice assortment
spritulist 13-05-2009, 12:10 since driving past this week more different types of flowers are now growing..purple in colour
spritulist 13-05-2009, 12:11 may be poppys...but look nice
poppies - heroin -parson cross. makes sense. another council initiative
grow your own. very nice flowers through.
hi, some of the wild flowers were sown by pupils at southey green school with the help of a horse drawn cultivator. My daughter was involved but it was about 5 years ago now
I drove by but i didn't see the purple flowers. I only saw the yellow rape seed flowers.
