My emergency leaflet has saved me .... twice.

two night is a row a massive spider has been in my living room and i've found it perfect for sliding under the glass with which i'd traped the spider. Well done New Labour, you have my vote for your effective role in the war against terror (from spiders)

Does anyone know what they are then? Heard them last night in Southey Green few times about 11 and then again this morning about 8? I'm still under the kitchen table just in case!!

They were all through last night and again this morning at about half hour intervals.
I thought they were something to do with the Bernard Rd Incinerator to be honest, but if they've been reported all around the city it sounds a bit fishy.

I think its something to do with terrorism prevention. I heard the UK is on high alert or something. Or maybe thats America?

Think its the same as the Air Raid Sirens thread. No one seems to know what they are but they can be heard all over the city.

Heard one this morning about 7am coming from somewhere in the city, I was at the hotel Bristol. Maybe it is to signal the opening of a car boot sale, just after the siren went off loads of people came to the car park behind the hotel for the car boot.

on sunday morning the siren could be heard in Longley from 7am. It seemed to go off every 10 minutes or so till about 8.

I thought the Taliban had moved into Firth Park - esp. for Ahmed :)

Im pretty sure they were going off last night (sunday night) at about 12. Im up in crookes/crookesmoor and they were pretty faint. where are they really loud?. their position may give a clue to their purpose.

Heard WW2 siren reaching Wadsley Bridge two nights ago at midnight. I think they should do it more often for people like me to imagine what it was like.

"Mother dear I'm writing you from somewhere in France hoping this finds you well, Sergant says I'm doing fine a soldier and half, heres a song we sing - it'll make you laugh. We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried line have you any dirty washing mother dear, We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried line 'cos the washing day is here. Whether the weather will be wet or fine we'll just rub along without a care. We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried line if the Siegfried lines still there".

As my owd mucker Fez wrote I too am sorry to hear about sirens back home.Expect Jerry is having a go at the steelworks again.Or maybe them new fangled Millenium buildings.Anyway just sorry that The Marples copped it -I used to enjoy a pint in there.
Let's hope when all this is over that Sheffield will bloom again with fountains and gardens.Don't want to see another hole in the road ever again. And let's hope the Owls win the First Division Championship.
Don't forget I promised to take you on the tram to Millhouses pool .

Dear Mum and Uncle Ned,

Couldn't write for the last two weeks mum because some bally Kraut sniper had us all pinned down in the NAAFI for the first week. Sgt 'Nobby' Clarke sent out a patrol eventually though when the beer ran out. Soon caught the blighter.

The second week Capt Bent-Bughar went missing in Anjou. All the chaps thought he must have been captured and the search lasted seven days, but we eventually found him being held for ransom in Madame Squateur's brothel. She reckoned he owed her 6000 francs. We gave her Cpl 'Donkey' Willis instead. She seemed quite satisfied with the swap. By the way, Capt Bent- Bughar is recovering nicely and should be able to wee soon.

By the way, the war's still on over here.

Your loving son

Ernest

have been told its blasting in Tinsley and Brinsworth to demolish large area of substantial industrial building and railway sidings or something.

They have to use a siren before each blast and it takes hours/days to set up each blast - so they go off at weird times of day and night, depending on each blast. It IS vital to ensure people stay clear of a blasting site, and its a legal requirement to do so. Its highly debatable whether or not anyone needs or wants to alert us to a possible terrorist attack.

I would think if it was testing to alert public about a terrorist attack we would have been warned to avoid people panicking. Also thought it was policy not to let people know they're about to be annihilated as it doesn't help, just causes panick and chaos.

AND... we all have our windows open day and night so we hear it now, but in winter when they do this sort of thing, no-one hears it.

got everyone going tho' hasn't it? I grew up near an MOD arms testing depot and was 11 before I realised the German army was not just over the hill trying to invade us all the time. Can't be asked to worry over sirens now.
