Perhaps you should both try: www.gaydar.co.uk

if there was a decent enough scene around, we'd all be happy. it is possible to be non-scene on the scene you know.. unless you don't drink!

Hello I am new to the area and have no idea where the best place to go is. I can recomend a site www.outintheuk.co.uk I met my partner on there and we have been together for 2 years now. I also met alot of people who were very nice to talk to. Good luck with your quest for experience. Please be careful as there are alot of **** heads out there.

I would also recommend Out in the UK as its quite a decent site. Gaydar is full of Slags. No offence ment to anybody who goes on their, its just my experience of that Website which leads me to saying that.

Bite your tongue and go to Climax on the 14th. Thats probably the best place around in Sheffield. I would mention Dempsys but that might put you off for life lol. My friend Elizabeth loves going there lol.

SpiderPete

There is nothing wrong with Dempseys at all, it wont put anyone off.

There is also Xes and Av-It Bar on Carlisle Street, which isnt in town, so if your afraid of being seen they are the place to be.

Also Takapuna on West Street for a Thursday night.

Also gaydar isnt full of idiots.

Crikey some of your comments would put anyone off, for once try and be positive and help them out

I like Dempsys, but my first impressions of it were scary.

I will have to try all the above mentioned when I get round to moving to sheffield. I do have to agree with the comments about gaydar. I think I have spoke alot of the people on there and found them to be time wasters. Mind you if your looking for experience that might be just the place. Just make sure you dont travel too far as they do tend not to turn up. Good luck with your quest any way.

I could have helped him explore, I hardly ever go on the scene and actually prefer straight pubs, but I'm too old.

jayb

I was tempted to put that in my message but I like yourself am too old.

richynomates
05-01-2005, 15:30
what is tooo old these days? i need to know so that i don't appear to be in the worng kinda place, if you know what i mean. i remember being a late-teenager, looking at those 20somethings upwards thinking "what are you doing here?" maybe i am now that person.....

nick2
05-01-2005, 15:43
For some reason the older I have got the less interested in the gay scene I have become, I don't know why.

richynomates
05-01-2005, 15:50
well... if there was a scene it might be different. I don't like what there is of the sheff one - the punters are way tooo cliquey and anything ever organised only really exists to fleece us all of our money. I think Cossack was the last proper sorta place that was clique-free and didn't charge stupid money - just to go in for a drink...
ooops - have we turned this thread into the "where's the gay scene thread"??

nick2
05-01-2005, 16:12
Do you remember The Albert ? That was a good pub, apart from the dodgy strippers who were illegal imigrants, the pub across the road was ok too, but I can't remember what it was called.

I do miss the Cossack, the last people who owned it managed to kill it completely though.

alan, just a word of warning to you and mike, and any other non-scene guys and gals who might be reading this thread.

I want to remind you that not everyone is really your friend, out there.

You really need to be careful, and watch out for the predatory ones. (it's difficult, I know, because they don't turn up with the word "predator" on their jackets. also, it's not confined to the gay scene, it's common to find the predatory in the straight scene, too!)

There are other ways and means of finding companionship and partners than the "scene".

you don't have to be "scene" to be gay.

All you need to be is you.

And remember, please... above all, if you are going to get involved with someone, practise safe sex.

BE SAFE!

PT

This is true, it's a common missconception that all gay people are like characters from Will & Grace, they are not, they are normal people and you get all types, including all the bad types.

What I would suggest is perhaps going to the LGB meeting at the University, if they still do them, as an alternative to going out drinking.

It's also true that more gay people don't go on the "scene" than those that do.

06-01-2005, 10:33
I agree with the above statement. I know more gay people who just do as they please. Alot of my straight friends and familey go to the village in manchester as its a good night out, and I have to agree.
As for plain talker I know where your coming from and have had many bad experiences in the gay world/scene. as you say people will be people.

SpiderPete

There isnt such a thing as "too old", I just hate those words, I know that the young men are extremely shallow and vain but one day they will be our age .... and they will know what it will be like.

I used to go to the Albert alot, now Gary and Simon have moved to Xes. I am trying to think of the pub across the road but cannot think what it was called.

Gaydar is full of timewasters, so be careful when u meet someone, make sure you see a picture of them first, dont take excuses from them, because those without a photo tend to be the ones who dont turn up. But thats only my opinion.

Also as I get older I tend now to stick to str8 pubs than gay onces.

anyway thats enough for now.

if you want to explore abit
try climax at the university, its mixed and therefore not threatening at all
as a gay bloke of 40, its perhaps the most normal venue ( having said that I havent been for years)

climax is non sceney and there not totally populated with overtly gay clientele

SpiderPete
12-01-2005, 22:19
I have yet to go to Climax, but will one month.

Would anyone recommend it ?
What are the dirnks priced at ?
Is the music good ?

vampy
16-01-2005, 16:29
not been down to climax for ages, i'd recommend it. i'm not gay but i had a good time every night i went, it's friendly and you can meet loads of people by accident really.

the drinks are cheap, shooters are only £1 and bottles/pints aren't expensive either.
it really depends what music you are into..it's quite clichéd but they started playing better music last time i went.

so i say go down and try it, and then let me know what you reckon

:) enjoy..

You have said the magic word .... cheap drinks ... I like the dance stuff ....... somert u can dance to suits me.

Is tha age range a bit mixed ?... last thing I wanna do is walk into a place full of screaming queens ..... any over 30 plus go in ?

saying that crowefan has answered most of the questions ... its finding someone to drag along. Nowt worse than someone alone in a big place.

Crikey Ive just read the topic "any none scene guys under 30" oops maybe I should shut up now.

Hi Alan!

I have joined the forum recently and felt relieved to read the replies u've got. U shud not think that u have to be a scene freak to live ur sexuality fully. I am a 30 yo French bloke and as far as i can remember i have never been single for more than a couple of weeks, yet i go out on the scene maybe 4-5 times a year. There are so many ways to find ur half: work, uni, common mates..
U might want to check on the new gay venue in Sheff called Fuel, seems good and fun, i will pop there in September.
Good luck and remember u can be gay and not bleach ur hair or get into a transe each time Kylie appears on Telly!

wow...graffy it feels reassuring that normal people too do exist in the gay world...don't get me wrong but i have been badly dissappointed in the people i have met thus far who profess to be gay..... one doesnt have to belong to a group and its that what i resent....there is a need amongst all gay men i have met thus far for me to profess the fact that i am gay...something that i have steadfastedly refused....i do not wish to any group of people.....i am a free spirit and a free spirit i shall remain...to some skeptics maybe its just another excuse to be a closet case...i do not offer any explanations on that.....but i do believe in what i say and i shall keep to that....i do not seek approval or assent in my beliefs from anyone....thats what i mean when i say non-scene....

alan87
17-08-2005, 11:53
i must admit that the non-scene thing has been misrepresented and i had a few people who have sent me some rather bizarre messages....atleast it made me smile....i played along a little to see how far it got....and omg did it make me chuckle....so to all those married men into stockings and high heels....i am really sorry but i am not looking for ****buddies.....i didnt mean to mislead u lads apologies if i did....i am not going to be a judge of anything either....
i am just looking for people who are normal and just want to explore their horizons....

If you want to meet other gay people without having to go out on the gay scene or whore yourself online, I suggest you come along to one of the Sheffield Uni or Hallam LGB meetings. It isn't just open to students (but mainly caters for students), and you can meet similarly minded people in a friendly environment. We have fun discussions, top speakers, cool films and sometimes just wacky parties. Check out the link in my sig for details.

I have been in Ruskins and its nice.

[edit] It isn`t the pre-fuel bar now, as Fuel is shut on Mondays and thats when Ruskins offered the discounted drinks.
