Personally I use DMC, not sure why, suppose it's what I started with! Does anyone use the cheaper brands?

DMC or Anchor where ever six-stranded cottons are used. They might be more expensive, but the cheaper brands are definitely not as good; they're not as lustrous and have a greater tendency to tangle and go fuzzy. Some of the stronger colours might even be prone to running in water (or when using a steam iron), and they might not have the same fade-resistant properties as DMC or Anchor six-stranded cotton. DMC and Anchor also have a greater range of shades.

Finding a good price for them is difficult though! They are 65p down hillsborough for one :o

I'd sooner pay a bit more and not risk the cottons running/fading/getting fuzzy. Plus they look a lot better on the finished item.

Both DMC and Anchor six-stranded cotton are 45p at Sew Discounted (http://www.sewdiscounted.co.uk/content.aspx?page=HOME).

I hadn't heard of them before, so the recommendation is much appreciated. Shame they don't do the perle and other threads though.

Hi everyone,

I use DMC and Anchor - just the one which is needed for the pattern I want to do. I just don't like converting.

I've never tried any other threads except for Dimensions in one of their kits.

I've only just arrived in the UK, how much do cross stitch threads cost over here?

In Germany it's about 1,20 € per 8 m in shops but they are often cheaper in internet shops.

Bye,
Rosi

Mostly from internet stores if I'm kitting up a project, but other than that, I usually get the odd skein from HobbyCraft.
There is also a place just off Middlewood Road called Craftastic that sell DMC threads.

I mainly use DMC threads, but I found that their metallics range drives me potty. I would seriously rather spin my pet hair and use that than DMCs metallics....erm...that's a private joke so ignore it :P

For specialist threads I tend to experiment. RG sell a beautiful range of metallics so I'm using them instead. I do hope to experiment more. My next thread experiment will be with silk threads.

have you tried using Thread Heaven? it makes the metallics a little more user-friendly.

...yes, but DMC metalics are still a nightmare. I'd never go back to them. RGs threads are already pretty soft, and I can use them without thread heaven, add thread heaven onto those and they really are heavenly to work with.

Their petite treasure range to be more specific, although they do a lot of different metallic ranges. I've only ever seen them available online though. But I do most of my shopping online anyway. I find sew and so a particularly useful treasure trove if you wanting to try more than just the most common brands. I had it recommended to me by several people and I gladly recommend it to anyone else. I love trying new threads and seeing how a different brand can change the feel of the threads, so with specialty threads I tend to experiment until I find the perfect one. Only get one thread at a time, the one I'm most likely to use, if it doesn't work out...well I gave my sister three of my DMC metallics. It's not a big loss to try one thread. But I stick with DMC for most of my work as they're good quality and easily available.

Oh yes, I have heard of them after all. I agree, sew&so are fab. very fast and reliable. I've only used a green RG on a cushion last xmas so far, and yes they are better than the DMC ones :hihi:

I have purple, gold and silver at the moment, but I really want some more...or course I don't have any pattarns to use them on at the moment even if I did get more :P
