View Full Version : Welcome to the crafts group!!
kittenta 06-10-2006, 09:25 Thank you to Geoff for setting this group up for us
Hi and welcome to the forums craft group!
Please join in and tells us all about yourself, the crafts you do or crafts you would like to do. Have you found a good technique or a great craft shop that you could share with us? Do you need some advice on a particular craft or just want to show off your creations? Please post them all here!
Any art or craft can be discussed here!! The only thing I will ask out of respect for the other group is that if you are interested in knitting, there is a knitting group on the forum already :) There is no reason why you can't discuss your knitting with that group and your other crafts right here!
So get posting!! I need some new ideas myself!
woolspinster 06-10-2006, 09:59 Nice to see the group up and running.

I'd like at least another 6 hrs in the day lol

Handspinning is spinning fibres ( wool, cotton etc.) on a spinning wheel or drop spindle. I can start a thread if you want and am always happy to help out people interested in learning to spin.

peakwool 17-02-2007, 18:11 Hello Everybody. I am keen to knit all day long. However work gets in the way. Am knitting teddy bears and heirloom blankets.:) Need to finish off two cardigans in Noro yarn - not my favourite job. A question for any one to let me know - are there any knitting groups around in South Sheffield?

lisa anne 01-03-2007, 21:48 hi there.ive been crafting about 11 months and love card making and jewellery making am currently looking into something else to add to my addiction.any suggestions??
Hello!
I'm a crafter, though at the moment I like doing a whole host of things. I love knitting (can't get past scarfs so far though), but I also have a sewing machine and I'm trying to teach myself dressmaking. So far, I've been making little zipped pouches that I decorate with embroidary and such.
Last christmas, I made nearly everyone presents (I'm NEVER doing that again!!!) and I made my aunt a knitting bag with a matching needle roll.
I should really get back into making things, as I've got a whole pile of fat quarters to use up!

Where do you buy your fabric from? I usually resort to buying from online shops and Ebay, as I don't have very many decent craft shops where I am, and certainly no specialist quilting/patchwork/fabric shops.

Considering I currently live in London, fabric shops round here are limited! I could go into Central London more, but the prices are steep (Liberties as some amazing fabric though, but matching prices!)
I do all my fabric buying on Ebay, especially as there are so often some good deals such as 50 squares for £5 or stuff like that.
Though, Ikea also sells some nice fabric. It's not that cheap, around £5 per/m but it has some nice patterns and it's quite good quality.
But, like my yarn, Ebay has supplied me with almost everything!
Ooh, I also keep an eye out in charity shops. Sometimes they have some nice sheets for sale, or even items of clothing that I could cut up for something else.
a_starfish 22-03-2007, 01:28 Hi everyone!
I like to sew! Whether I'm any good at it remains to be seen but I enjoy it none the less. :D I'm currently fighting my desire to sew NOW and make myself wait until june when uni has finished for the year. But spring is here and the sunshine makes me want to leap headlong into trying to make dresses, skirts, hats, attempts at pattern drafting again.
Maybe over easter I'll finally get the chance to finish a corset I started making in September before uni started! Only 7 billion and one loose threads left to tie off. :help:
Ms D Mina 24-03-2007, 15:05 Hello all you handycrafts wonders! Can you answer me a question please? What is a 'fat quarter'? Please excuse my ignorance but i'm trying to find some fabric for re-upholstering my dining chairs and most of the fabric i've seen on ebay comes in FQs! If this isn't gonna be enough, can anyone recommend a fabric shop in Sheffield? And does anyone know where i can buy some foam as the chair seats are getting a littleflat!
Many thanks!
Being an ex-Sheffielder, I can't answer your Sheffield-specific questions, but here's a link (http://www.quiltersreview.com/article.asp?article=/tip/expert/011112_a.asp) to info about fat quarters :) .
Ms D Mina 24-03-2007, 18:32 Thanks Hecate - now i know. Quick conversion to centimetres for my metrically minded brain and it looks as if one FQ will do one chair if i use the ebay route for fabric
Unless anyone else out there knows of a decent fabric supplier in Sheffield - have just come back from John Lewis and was pretty disappointed. Some nice stuff but all the patterns were too big for chair seats.
Thanks again!
puddingsue 29-03-2007, 16:41 Hi everyone, am new on this forum.

Spanna2005 15-04-2007, 21:51 Hi everyone :)
I've been on and off Sheffield Forum for the past 18 months or so. My SO is an addict to this place!
I've been making my own cards for the past 4 years and have been asked to make my friend's wedding stationary for next year.
I also learned how to knit and crochet at the end of last year, and my current crafty direction is in dressmaking! My motivation is that I can never find anything that fits properly in the shops
Does anyone else go through phases of crafting?
So get posting!! I need some new ideas myself! :loopy:
shazzywags 05-05-2007, 18:20 Hello- I have some large wool blankets and cotton items I need to dye in the tudor way, i.e. naturally. I need to get my hands on some alum mordant and can find nothing locally. Any suggestions? Will Cream of Tartar be a suitable substitute???
shazzywags 05-05-2007, 18:28 Can you advise on where to get alum mordant please?

Hi welcome to the group :) I go through lots of phases, crafting and not crafting (normally due to lack of time though) and doing different crafts. Learning to crochet is on top of my list of want to's!
kittenta 06-05-2007, 00:42 So get posting!! I need some new ideas myself! :loopy:
What exactly was the :loopy: for? Do you not have ideas to post?

You could try here (http://www.pmwoolcraft.co.uk/html/browse.php?CatID=24)
Or are you looking for a shop to go to? Maybe you could start a thread about it?
Squeejie 02-06-2007, 22:21 Hi I'm new to the forum, but have heard lotz 'bout it from friends (u know who u r).
I enjoy jewelery-making, mostly earrings as I don't have pierced ears, knitting (poorly), crochet (again poorly), sewing, but my mum "borrowed" my sewing machine to do something for my neice & nephew Xmas 2005 and I still haven't got it back yet (!!!!!!), a little art, abstract designs mostly as I can't draw ppl etc to save my life, handy for my newest craze, cross-stitch where I like free kits and designing my own twiddles.
Finally I lurve cooking, which is prob why my other 1/2 is 23 st+. So you could say I'm a bit of a crafting dilletante really.
If anyone wants to share any X-stitch patterns, feel free to let me know, especially as I'm trying to get ideas for a friend for a wedding-themed sampler she wants to do as a wedding present.
Cheers crafters all.
Hi, I have been making corsets for a few years now, the fully boned waist cinching kind! I love making new patterns and designs, and generally I like sewing, but there never seems to be enough hours in the day. I'm currently working on making an Abba outfit for a an exceptionally tall 'little girl' for her dance show.
kittenta 08-06-2007, 13:51 Welcome squeejie and zefeena :) Let us know what you current projects are and you can post pictures of your work too.
Hi everyone - I should have posted here first to say hello, but started a new thread about my project Open Source Embroidery. I live in Newcastle, but am in Sheffield for the whole of July working on embroidery, patchwork and knitting projects that explore ideas of shared production. Several people in Sheffield told me that patchwork is a big thing... so we've started a plan to make a collaborative patchwork between Sheffield and Newcastle based on the 216html colours. There's a thread on the knitting group if you'd like to get involved. Bye for now, Ele
lizzzbur 07-07-2007, 21:43 Hi, I started making jewellery last year when i couldn't find any i liked for my bridesmaids. Welcome Nerdynana! You sound like superwoman - I am really impressed with your range of craft skills - would love to try lacemaking and hardanger, but need to use up some of my other craft stuff before I venture into new fields. I go to a couple of small, informal craft sessions as a Townswomen Guild Member (even though I am the youngest by about 30 years) and it is lovely to get out even for a coupe of hours in the afternoon every now and again. Give it a go, they don't bite and any new members are always welcome! Which area of Sheffield are you based in?

Meroveus 09-07-2007, 13:30 Not sure if it applies as a craft.....
I like to practice medicinal herbalism, I make oils, tinctures, ointments, infusions and decoctions for various ailments, as well as creating loose incence for fragrancing the home.
kittenta 15-07-2007, 09:42 I bet your house smells wonderful!
Hi, I really aught to have said hello and introduce myself here first, before going to the threads and nattering.
I've just gone down the posts and you lot are doing some wonderful crafts... might even have a go at one or two of them at some time.
As for myself, I've always wanted to make 'something'. When I was little my mother always had ideas for us to make presents and stuff... I guess I'm just carrying on where she left off.
I have been making hand-stitched patchwork quilts for a few years. My first one was supposed to be a cushion, but not having any experience with what to buy/do, I bought way too much fabric and finished up going back for some more and making a small 'lap quilt' using the Rail Fence block pattern.
My current project is an applique quilt for my son. It has appliqued emblems representing both him and his Battalion on it. I'm trying desperately to get as much of it done before he comes home on leave so he can see how far I've got with it. Just two more blocks to do and then I can start sewing it all together ready to quilt. I began this in January, so it's been a very long project, but one I've absolutely loved doing. My heart and Soul has gone into this... liturally.
Over the years I've also taken up Tudor Blackwork and went on to design my own pictures, made cards and I also still do Scrapbooking.... inbetween going to work and everything else:D
Well enough of me waffling. lovely to meet you all. Chat soon

karmasolutio 06-11-2007, 22:12 Hi, I am currently studying Aromatherapy and have been making my own face/skin care creams and oils for nearly 2 years now. I just wondered if anyone else had an interest in this topic. Also I am looking for local suppliers of products such as Shea Buter, Cocoa Butter, Glycerine, Essential ils etc......
If anyone can help, I would be grateful.
Lany
susiepoosie 06-11-2007, 22:43 Hia, I've been on the forum a while now and am really pleased this group has been formed. I do quite a lot of crafts but tend to pick them up and put them down and so it takes me ages to finish things. I've done quite a lot of cross stitch which I'm quite good at and I just did a years course in patchwork and quilting which I'm not so good at. I also "try" to knit from time to time so will keep an eye out for the next meet at the wool barn as have never progressed from scarves. I also enjoy making bags (though not done this for a while). This thread will motivate me to get off my bum and get back to doing my crafty things as I really enjoy them.
Susie
kittenta 28-11-2007, 12:37 So Susie, have you got off your bum and started something? :hihi:
floralfoote 28-11-2007, 13:10 Im a bit like you Susie, I start things but never seem to get them finished, and if I do, they are out of fashion by the time they get finished.
It would be a good group to help each other finsh stuff.
kittenta 28-11-2007, 13:40 Would some sort of weekly challenge help? The challenge has to be completed on an unfinished project! I never finish anything either :hihi:

Hi there, what project are you starting off with?
Beadsage 29-04-2008, 18:44 Hello all, I am that rarest of animals - the male seedbeader. Although I live in Wakefield, I teach workshops and sell kits through Jencel beads on Eccleshall road, so I'm hoping I qualify as a native beader! I'll go and have a look around now.
peter :)
Well..................I had a look, and figured out you have to be a cross stitcher to live 'ere. Never mind.

sandorasbox 29-05-2008, 21:36 I have not been on this section much, I do doll house crafts which is quite varied. So I thought you might be interested in my latest project.I have made a cafe come bistro with a roof garden. The inside is decorated with real lights, which looks good furnished as a bistro. The roof garden is tastefully fenced with spindled staircase so the customers can access the area,They can then enjoy the fine wine or beer in nice surroundings with perhaps a snack too.Sorry for going on ,but i get really involved in my miniature creations, some of my miniature people wear hand knitted clothes, which are done on needles like pins size 20 I think.I must admit I cant knit that small, but I do make their clothes sometimes. Is anyone else interested in miniature work?
kittenta 29-05-2008, 23:41 Sounds lovely! Have you got any pictures you can show us?

:confused:Can we have that in English please? I have no idea what you are on about? For all I know, what you are selling could be something rude!
Don't know if any of you crafters out there are aware of this, but the Sheffield 'Star' Newspaper are running a trip to the Birmingham Nec to a Crafts for Christmas Fayre.
It's in November (sorry I can't remember exact dates, but know it's a weekend) involves an overnight stop Bed, Breakfast, Evening Meal and costs about approx £89 (includes enterance fee to NEC. Coach Travel etc).
Perhaps some of you already know, but I just thought I pass the message along.
PS No, I don't work for them, before anybody asks!
They could do with running one to the shows in Harrogate
:) Perhaps if enough of us wrote to 'The Star' they may organise one.
craft-candy 25-10-2008, 18:49 Hey everyone,
I just wanted to say a quick hello and let you all know about a Sheffield based craft group that has recently been set up.
Sheffield Craft Candy was created by a group of like minded crafters and it's a place to get together with other makers to support, encourage, promote each others work, participate in and organise workshops and craft fairs or simply share skills.
We'll be holding craft fairs, workshops, informative talks and general meetings as well as keeping everyone up to date about the Sheffield crafts scene.
Check out our website or contact us if you want any info!
Hi I enoy making cards is there a group that meets in sheffield I would like more ideas,I have got so much craft stuff but lacking inspiration at the moment,
lda04mcr 11-12-2008, 19:35 Hey everyone!
Does anyone know any good bead shops in Sheffield? I make jewellery, but keep running out of materials... and I prefer buying locally rather than ordering the stuff online from Hong Kong!
lda04mcr 11-12-2008, 19:39 Hi I enoy making cards is there a group that meets in sheffield I would like more ideas,I have got so much craft stuff but lacking inspiration at the moment,
Hey!
Me and my boyfriend are going to make our own christmas cards this year. Maybe we'll cut out stamps from potatoes, by cutting them in half and then carving a star shape or moon shape into the flat side. Then you can use gold paint, and stamp stars all over some dark red, dark green or dark blue card. When I was little, I'd do the same on the kind of brown paper you can get from the post office - to make matching wrapping paper!
SaraStamper 01-01-2009, 12:14 Hi peeps
I've introduced myself on the main forum but thought I'd say hello here too as I only really joined the forum for the crafting group.
My main interest is papercrafting but I also enjoy knitting and cross-stitch when I have time.

Hi boyesy
I run papercrafting classes and workshops.
First option - I'll be having a class towards the end of January 2009, haven't finalised it yet (will post on the forum when I do) but we'll be making a few different cards and a gift box/bag as well. Admission fee of £10 to cover materials costs and tea/coffee/biccies. No additional commitment to buy anything but you're welcome to if you choose.
Second option - I can give a workshop for you and your friends at your own home (party plan style). I demonstrate a few cards and crafting techniques to you and then you all have a go at a simple make and take project. It's not as hands-on as a class but just a fun crafting time for you and your friends. There is no charge for a workshop and you get free rubber stamp sets and other Stampin' Up! products if your friends spend a minimum amount on goodies. The more they spend the more freebies you get.
If you (or anyone else in the forum) would like to come to a class or have a workshop then just mail me for more details (I haven't got enough posts to provide the link yet but I'm at sarastamper123 @ googlemail.com). There's also more information and some examples of what we might make on my blog (just click on it in the signature below).

Psychceramic 27-01-2010, 12:41 Hello i want to set up a crafts group possibly in walkley; anyone else interested? I have tried joining all the craft groups but they are all full and have massive waiting lists! x
what kind of crafts are you looking at?
Psychceramic 28-01-2010, 10:59 a mixed group would be ideal, I dont want to specify as I think the mix of skills would be really rewarding! I personally specialise in ceramics but dip into all sorts of other things, photography, illustration, short stories, jewellery making etc. Would be nice to join forces with all types of creative types; i would like to learn textiles, felt making, jewellery making in better detail, glass etc; the list is endless.
Are you interested in doing something? What sort of things do you make?
