I noticed that traffic last night was backed up considerably and a journey home that normally takes me about 20-30 minutes took over an hour.

I admit I had to call in at Decathlon to buy some items, so I had to head towards town instead of my usual back route home, but it was definatly worse than I've known it in the past.

There may also be issues this morning and I noticed a car later on last night had managed to take out a traffic light on the roundabout by Farm Road, I suspect it will have all been cleared up now but not sure if it had any affect on the system there.

The city centre traffic is always bad, especially around Broad Lane, Tenter Street and West Bar. Hopefully the Inner Relief Road will sort it out, but we'll have to see. I was walking home last night down Tenter Street at about 5:30pm and a bloke in a car asked me for directions to the Hallamshire Hospital. After I'd told him, he asked me if the traffic was always this bad and I said yes.

I saw at least 4 accidents while driving round Sheff yesterday 2 just on the way home from brightside! Think all the congestion was caused by dopey hazards driving to far up other peoples backsides n then not stopping causing accidents or running red lights. I'm starting to feel left out when I stop for a red light whats goin on?

The traffic is just getting sillier all the time! It takes me 20 minutes longer to get home from work than last year. Has anyone else noticed this?

Its partly because students are back as are schools its suprising what a difference this makes in the summer when they are off.

There are a lot more road works appearing and the council are on a closing road spree where roads that were once useful are now either one way or dead ends.:loopy:

Queue some SMUG individuals coming onto this thread saying;

Well I walk everywhere on my hands, and I live 25 miles away from work, and I don't have any problems with traffic jams, and it keeps me fit. If everyone else walked to work on their hands then the world would be a better place!! shame on you all for owning a car! shame!

you get them on every thread!

e.g.

Thread might say something like: I got a parking ticket today and i was only 30 seconds late back to my car, and i was only late because i helped an old lady cross the road

Typical reply from smug individual: Well the rules are there for a reason, you should obide by the rules - I for one have never done anything wrong in my life. You should plan your time better.

rant over!

I think this is part of the problem of obese kids, it's amazing how many fat kids there are when you pass a school, maybe if they walked to school it would reduce this?

I used to walk to school every day when it was local to my parents, in any weather pretty much. Then when I went to the secondary school I walked and got the bus as it was further away. In nice weather I'd walk there and back too quite happily.

Surely if the council is keen to tackle congestion it should attack one of the major causes, the school run? As stated by someone else above, school holidays are excellent for all of us, the traffic reduces dramatically. If we had a yellow bus scheme similar to the US then maybe that would help for those living further away from the school, the rest could walk.

36 miles actually, and walking on hands would have been a luxury, we had to drag ourselves there with our lips.:(

That's nothing - when we were kids we have to walk to school using out tongues - and we didn't have tarmac on the pavements, we had broken glass - and the streets were lined with adults throwing poison darts at us! :(

This is degrading into the infamous three Yorkshireman sketch :D

I didnt have pavements when i went to school. I had to swim through hot tar for 100 miles and then wash it off in Sulphuric acid before changing into my school uniform :(

I'd have loved a uniform - we had to go naked.

By the way I must be the smug git - I have a two minute walk to work. This is because I chose to live near to where I work. My quality of life is much better for not having to spend 1.5 hours of my day in the company of first mainline...

Traffic has been really bad these past couple of days going up Prince of Wales Road, took almost 20 minutes on the bus this morning to get up to Manor Top :(

Have you noticed that when it rains the traffic seems to be heavier? Is it me imaging it or is it true?

Too me about 40 minutes last night to drive from Sheffield uni to the top of City Road. And the main reason it's so bad is all the traffic lights, there must be a better solution to traffic lights every 5m down the road.

Obviously you have to adjust your driving to match the conditions, but there are many people that hesitate in bad weather and add to congestion. This sort of bad driving slows everyone down and often causes frustration and some people to act stupid in an attempt to get around them (neither are excusable).

It's funny, if you look how Sheffield drivers act with a bit of rain or light covering of snow and then look to how other countries cope with much worse conditions. I know it's what you get used to, but it does show that certain weather conditions are easy to get around.

The City centre traffic is so bad nowadays on an *ordinary* day, that it only takes one accident or breakdown in a key spot to gridlock it completely. It may just have been someone getting an engine failure at the West Bar roundabout.

And, yes, we do need to get cars off the roads. Not because we hate cars, but - well, just look around. Can't you see how insane it is that working people spend 2-3 hours a day sat in a car being totally unproductive?

Solutions? Well, it's a damn sight easier identifying a problem than it is solving one. We need to get buses re-regulated, so we can have a service that suits workers - starting at 4 or 4.30am like it used to, and have buses running everywhere, often, with zero fares.

We need to get kids back to school on foot, whether alone, in groups, with adults paid to ferry them about, but it's got to be done somehow.

And for those few individuals who STILL don't live on a bus route, or have a job that requires them to drive from place to place, well if 90% of the other cars are off the roads your life will be easier too.

And, yes, we do need to get cars off the roads. Not because we hate cars, but - well, just look around. Can't you see how insane it is that working people spend 2-3 hours a day sat in a car being totally unproductive?

I've heard they've even done away with a return ticket, forcing you to buy a day saver. Am I the only person that remembers it being 2p, then 5p then 15p to travel on the busses as a kid? I was shocked the other day when my mate explained that it's over £1.50 for him to get to town from Ecclesall and how often the busses don't turn up or are late.

I don't use busses myself for several reasons, but one of them is because they seem to be aimed more at making a profit than acting as a public service. I know that First is a company and should therefore make a profit, but shouldn't public transport be a public service? Obviously operating any service at a loss isn't good, but if this was a true public service then there'd be no real need for profits or to satisfy shareholders etc. it would be more aimed at providing what we need and that's a decent public transport system where the public transportation camme first, not profits.

We need to get kids back to school on foot, whether alone, in groups, with adults paid to ferry them about, but it's got to be done somehow. This is definately worth doing, reduce obesity in the chubby youngsters too. It's scarey how many fat kids there are about, our nation's health is in trouble if this lot grow up in to yet more fat people, could the NHS cope with that many problems? I appreciate some people have other issues causing obesity, but let's rule out the one caused by lazy parents and kids.

And for those few individuals who STILL don't live on a bus route, or have a job that requires them to drive from place to place, well if 90% of the other cars are off the roads your life will be easier too.

And for anyone still sat at work or planning on travelling in Sheffield shortly, my girlfriend just phoned to say that's traffic's almost as bad as last night and appears to be building up again. I noticed earlier today that there are several traffic light systems out in some places in Sheffield, not sure if these are the cause of the problems though. Have fun :D

No, I think we should torture the city council until they give up their hopeless anti car agenda and actually take some action to improve the situation instead of doing the opposite.
