This is one of my favourites.

Holland isn't a country, people in the UK mistake the regions of Holland for a country.

Another favourite.

When Charlemane died his land was divide between his three sons, as was the practice at the time. Because he controlled much of Western Europe the land was divide in what is now France, Germany and the Benelux countries.

Carrying a severed rabbit's foot around isn't lucky ......

"Rabbit's Foot" is the old folk name for a lucky plant called Field Clover. Over the years, people have confused the folk name with the poor animal's limbs, and now carry around a manky old foot instead of the actual plant.

He he he!!!

Yep.

What is the capital of Holland? Amsterdam.

What is the capital of The Netherlands? Den Haag.

What are all 7?
Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, Overijssel, Friesland and Groningen

Half of these are below sea level

Cannabis is not legal in The Netherlands

All living organisms contain n,n dimethyltryptamine - an extremely potent, if not the quintessential, psychedelic.

Mushrooms are only the fruiting bodies (reproductive organs) of a much larger organism beneath the surface.

Slime molds are the largest unicellular organisms.

about 60% of shark species will die from asphyxiation if rendered immobile

The worlds oldest nuclear reactor is in Gabon, West Africa. It predates 'Fermi's Baby' by, oh, about 2000 million years.

I've only just got back to this thread. Thank you all so far, especially phan who we can always rely on. I was especially interested in the dimethyltryptamine fact. Incidentally, could someone just clarify the holland/netherlands situation? Which bit is a country and what’s the rest of it. I got confused at that point. I've been getting generally confused all day. I think all started when I fell up the stairs this morning and then ran into a locked door.

Fact: It's 39 minutes after home time, and i'm still in work. I have no idea why i am still here as everyone else has gone home.

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.(Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.) (I'm still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home...... maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. ("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!")

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. For a human, that would be equivalent to jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes...lucky pig... can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm........won't go there.)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing....)

A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out.)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??)

The Bombardier Beetle (Brachinus) is a beetle that has the ability to eject boiling chemicals at up to 100 degrees centigrade from two "guns" in its body at up to 1000 pulses per second. Each time it shoots out these chemicals, the beetle itself gets drenched, yet it manages to survive. At the slightest touch to its body, the guns start operating, except during mating. The Bombardier Beetle has chambers within its centimeter long body to store substitute hydroquinones, tolyhydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals mix peacefully unless high temperatures are applied. The chambers feed into a mixing reservoir which lets into a combustion chamber that sports two gun turrets. When danger approaches, the chemicals are squirted into a chamber where incredibly complex enzyme molecules encourage the chemicals to bond explosively out of the barrels.

The interesting part is how evolution explains this extremely complex creature.

Don't know if it's true or not, but this site disproves a lot of 'facts' that are on t'internet.

'Of the five unanswered claims, I would say some evidence supports peanuts being an ingredient of dynamite. Also it appears true that in an average American lifetime you will spend six months sitting at red lights, not to mention eight months opening junk mail and seven years in the bathroom.'

Hm. The 'evidence' though is just 2 sites which just claim the fact.
I like the last one of this list though:

Beetles taste like apples, wasps like pine nuts, and white worms like fried pork rinds.

The citrus soda 7-UP was created in 1929; “7” was selected because the original containers were 7 ounces. “UP” indicated the direction of the bubbles.

The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as substitute for blood plasma.

Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.

The 57 on the Heinz ketchup bottle represents the number of varieties of pickles the company once had.

The sound of E.T. walking was made by someone squashing her hands in jelly.

Pearls melt in vinegar.

A fresh onion, when cut, releases a gas called propanethiol-S into the air. When this gas reaches your eyes, it mixes with the water in the eye to form a weak acid. This acid irritates the eye and causes the tear-producing glands to flood the eye with water in an attempt to wash away the irritant. These tears are what makes you look like you’re crying.

Two-thirds of the world’s eggplant is grown in New Jersey .

The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley’s gum.

Betsy Ross is the only real person to ever have been the head on a Pez dispenser.

Almonds are a member of the peach family.
