My computer stops responding all the time, using Ulead Express, Microsoft Word, Imaging, Internet Explorer, Paint, and many more, I have to restart it over and over.

I have taken it back to my supplier many times and asked him to put it right, he always says he has done but it is never any different, why? what can I do to cure this problem? and can it be cured?

Do you have a virus scanner running?

I recently had a problem with my machine hanging and by process of elimination I tracked the culprit down to being McAfee virus scanner. It's run great since I uninstalled it.

Be useful to know what you're using on your PC in terms of:

How much RAM?
Processor speed/type?
What operating system? (windows 98/ME/2000/XP (home/pro))

etc...

Oh, and when was the last time it was given a clean installation (ie: started from scratch) ?

Overall don't just remove a virus scanner without having a plan to replace it though... you do not want a nekked machine

84 Meg Graphics

The dealer took it in 3 weeks ago and wiped it clean, then re-installed everything.

Ok... sadly a lot of the problem is going to be down to the fact that you have Win ME...

That operating system is an absolute ****ing travesty and just not a happy camper at all..

Anything before Win2000 doesn't handle crashes or exceptions at all well without hanging so all it takes is for one of the programs to suffer a problem and it dies... Win2000 and either of the XP versions will kill the process/programme but usually stay up and running ok...

My advice, would be to save yourself a lot of grief and buy a copy of WinXP Home (or Win2000) and install that fresh.. Your system seems to be spec'd to more than cope with it and you'll end up with a much more stable and usable system as a result... plus for all the teeth gnashing you'll avoid it's worth the expense..

Don't get XP home, get XP Pro instead.

Erm... the difference between the two is negligible in terms of performance for this sort of setup AFAIK...

If you want to do a lot of networking or do advanced OS tweaking then get Pro... but if it's just for a standalone PC and you're not planning on going high powered, ESPECIALLY if money is an object then stay with the Home edition...

It depends where you shop. The difference in price can be quite small, especially considering the extras that XP Pro has.
