View Full Version : Which castle to visit on a day out?
funkyukgal 05-10-2006, 02:34 Ive got transport and would like the travel time to be 1.5hrs or less, which castles are worth visiting? Not up for ruined castles, whats the point?
Or recommend me somewhere to go on a day out, with abit of history, same travel time, (not skeggy or blackpool or the other seaside place)
Ive thought about York, they've got the viking museum...
 :help:
brodsworth hall, near monk bretton.
fantastic house & gardens, with a cafe.
shall i get my English Heritage book out for you??
Don_Kiddick 05-10-2006, 08:32 Conisbrough Castle (http://www.conisbroughcastle.org.uk/) the finest castle I've ever been to, and there's a train station within walking distance if you don't fancy driving
Ginger_Kitty 05-10-2006, 08:37 brodsworth hall, near monk bretton.
:suspect: Its nowhere near Monk Bretton, one is in Barnsley, the other in Doncaster... or is there a secret passage that i don't know about...???
Anyway, Brodsworth is off Jn 37 of the A1(M), just north of Doncaster, about 40 min drive from Sheffield
Conisbrough is seconded by me (Jn 36 (A1(M)), its a castle with a roof and floors, so only a bit of a ruin! there aren't many 'complete' castles left any more :(
Bolsover (just down the M1 to jn 29) isn't too bad either :) Its about half ruined, the other half, at least two of the most substantial buildings are still pretty much intact, the Keep is quite spectacular (with walls and roof and everything!) with amazing views right to the Peak District
got me directions confused, thank you for your timely correction.i was looking at the priory place at Monk Bretton and got my destinations juxtaposed.
i didnt mention the other castles 'cos the op didnt want to look at ruins, but i third them all.
craigmason 05-10-2006, 08:42 warwick castle

warwick castle

I would warn against Warwick castle. It is really an expensive theme park which charges £16 for an adult and £45 for a family ticket.
The best castle in my view is Richmond Castle which is £3.60 for an adult. It is probably nearer 2 hours than 1.5.
Agent Orange 05-10-2006, 09:04 Was gonna suggest Conisbrough, but Don beat me to it. If you want to visit stately homes etc then there is a good one at Wentworth. Unfortunately, you are unable to look around inside the home, but the walk in the grounds is very good as there are some stunning views, lots of deer and a few monuments dotted around. Also, they have just opened an old part of the garden which you can access through the garden centre. Truly beautiful! If that fails to impress then there is always the ancient church and wentworth village!!

When you get bored of the castle there is also the Cathedral (which rather overshadows the castle!), and Medieval Bishop's Palace to see, along with a rather picturesque historical part of the city. This is about 50 minutes drive from Sheffield.
EDIT: Forgot there is also Tamworth which isn't ruined, and this is about bang on your 1 1/2 hours travelling time.
alchresearch 05-10-2006, 18:32 Knaresborough is nice for a day out.
Godzilla 05-10-2006, 18:50 Not a castle, but Chatsworth House has a sculpture exhibition on in the grounds which looks quite interesting.
funkyukgal 05-10-2006, 18:55 thanks for all the suggestions :)
IVe been to Conisbrough castle, its a ruin and Nottingham castle its a row of stones! lol
Id like somewhere where we can actually look inside of the castle. I have been looking at Warwick castle, sounds like the best one. If i book on the website it will give me a discount :) Im getting different time travel from 1.5-2.5hrs, how long do you think it takes to get there?
Has anyone been to Lincoln Castle? Just wondering if theres a inside or its an open area castle.
Whats OP? Is it original poster?

There is an inside at Lincoln Castle. There's Cobb Hall which you can climb and used to have the gallows on top until the 1859.
You can walk around the top of the castle walls for some great views.
The Prison section is open to the public, as is the prison chapel which is the only one of it's design left in the world. There is also an original Magna Carta.
As I said, there is also the cathedral if you need to do more than just the castle during the day, and in my opinion is a far more astounding building.
The welsh castles are pretty impressive but further than a day trip :(

im from lincoln originally, and althogh its a boring city to live in, it is great for history! the castle and cathedral are very impressive, and after that you can visit westgate and newport to see the roman arch and remains. steep hill has some lovely tudor buildings also
funkyukgal 06-10-2006, 03:49 ok so its a toss between lincoln castle or warwick castle......
kittencapes 06-10-2006, 08:54 Well I am from Warwick originally and the Castle there is stunning, there is loads to do and see, like they have actors who put on a little play inside the dungeons, its kinda like being in a theatre production and suprisingly scary! It takes me about an hour and a half max to get from shef to warwick going at a steady pace, an hour if your a quick driver! If you look around there are always ticket offers on as well like buy one get one free offers! Well worth a vist!
Don_Kiddick 06-10-2006, 09:02 thanks for all the suggestions :)
IVe been to Conisbrough castle, its a ruin
When?
It's only the curtain wall that's in ruin, the central keep now has floors, & a roof.

I think the OP was referring to Conisborough and not the castle, Don :)
Seriously, the castle is great now that those floors have been installed on the central keep. Worth a visit.
Tattershall Castle

A few miles south of Lincoln, great views from the top.
Lovely church next door that has a permanent jumble/book sale and cafe.
:)
There's Bolton Castle in North Yorks:
http://www.boltoncastle.co.uk/
It's near Aysgarth Falls and is also walkable from the terminus of the Wensleydale preserved railway (which runs to Leeming just off the A1).
Have you tried Bolsover Castle? Junction 30 off the M1, then follow the signs for Bolsover, ya cant miss it! And its supposed to be good:thumbsup:
funkyukgal 19-10-2006, 15:19 Finally had the day out!!!! Went to Warwick Castle and it was really good, amzing view from the towers. I booked with 365tickets.com Good site to go on for discounts on days out. It took an hour to get there.
