I love buying things that are poorly described because they go so cheaply. I got my skein winder on ebay for £8 including postage because it was sold as a skien winder. Anyone searching for one would have missed it.

Very slightly off topic, but I must have a bit of a rant about Ebay. Well, not really a rant, but a slightly vexed question.

I buy a lot of books from Ebay, especially out of print ones, though I buy some new ones too. I always check on Amazon and elsewhere before deciding to bid. If the price for second-hand gets too close to the price for new, taking into account the postage, I don't bother bidding.

The other week, I was interesting in a series of booklets. These are easily available, and would have cost about £52 in total for the new copies, including the postage. The Ebay auction for these booklets ended at a few pounds over this price.

What's that all about then? Do these people not check out the prices before bidding? Do they get carried away in a mad bidding frenzy? It's bizarre behaviour, and it irritates me immensely.

I feel better for that  .

Don't let it irritate you, amuse you yes :)

Ebay over the years has built up a reputation as being the cheapest place to buy anything - so alot of people don't bother searching, they just go to ebay.

It did used to be cheaper, when it was full of sellers selling their unwanted junk, err, I mean treasure. But now it's full of Arthur Daley wannabee's.

Some people also 'think' ebay is safer than websites they might never had heard of as well, because they can pay by paypal and have heard of ' buyers protection' - which is great, if you like waiting 8 months for part of your money back

I'm painting a bit of a bleak picture, but it's not all bad, you've just got to use your noggin' and look around first.

You're right, of course. It's more daft than anything else, especially with books. Everyone and their dog has heard of Amazon, surely?

The booklets in question were a bit specialised, and I don't think they are on Amazon. However, anyone prepared to pay that much for them, must know the authors, be familiar with their stuff and know where to look for it new  .

Just realised, that sounds a bit mysterious. They aren't a series of booklets on the finer points of BDSM or something, honestly; they're part of a creative embroidery series by Beaney and Littlejohn  .

There can be alot of factors involved really.

I take it for granted that I can pop to meadowhall and buy a mickey mouse toaster, for example. But there are hundreds of square miles out there full of people who can't - and they've just found the Tinternet!

P&P can be another reason, some website want silly P&P costs, where as some ebayers don't.

I have to hold my hands up to buying on ebay and then going and looking on other websites and finding I didn't get that good a deal in the end, but you live and learn.

Another factor to consider is the Shill Bidder, where the seller has a second ID and uses it to push the price up, very naughty and does get people banned - then they go and set up a few more accounts

ebay has got so many flaws it's untrue.

But we all still use it.
