Go to the New India Garden. It's near Everest on a corner, it's a white building, well priced, and the best curry in Sheffield. I reccomend the Chicken Satay highly!

I cannot believe you're saying "Balti King" in Broomhill. I've been there twice (both for mates birthdays) and its been the worst curry I've ever tasted. Wall paper paste with 3 pieces of chicken. Terrible. Stick with the other suggestions.

There's also a really really good curry house on Spital Hill (can't remember what its called) thats a real spit and sawdust place but a better curry you will not find in Sheffield. Fantastic hot curries.

Precisely.

I sometimes wonder if by 'good' people refer to anything for under a fiver (maybe two for a tenner?).

Be prepared to spend more than twenty quid and you might be in for a big surprise.

Balti King? The 'king' bit is right, but a three-letter prefix is missing.

At the moment I'd suggest Cafe Guru. Been twice and it's been faultless. You can even taste the spices, something you'd never be able to do at BK!!

Balti King always used to be good, not been for a while now so maybe its changed. Plus I was pretty much always bladdered when I used to go and when you are in that state anything spicy with lumps of meat in tastes fantastic!

Balti King tastes disgusting unless it's 0230 and you're off your tits on lager. There's a new one called Jeera in Crookes that is improving fast, initially they were a bit rough but the lamb biryani I had the other night was utterly gorgeous.

Ranmoor Tandoori's also good, if a bit of a pain to get to.

Not in Meersbrook, but Mangala has been my favourite so far in year and a half in Sheff. One down the road - Kashmir? - has been reccomended by friends whose judgement I'd trust, and Butlers is ok too. Balti King I've also heard things about, but all from some time ago, so I think I will try it sometime and see as it's so local...

I like the food in Nirmal's, only I feel uncomfortable eating with Gupta sat beside me watching my response to every spoonful of pilau rice I insert into my mouth.

'Good, huh? You should try my naan bread. I get you some'. She doesn't mention that all her recommendations will be charged to your bill.

It's a relief to get out (and even then I'm looking behind me to see she isn't following me).

PS - The curry house down from Nap's is Ambar.

Duvell -

I once went to Nirmal's with some friends and a Canadian millionaire. You can imagine the interest Gupta paid us, a group of 5 with big appetites (including a well dressed Canadian with a large wallet).

When Mr Money enquired about what to eat she went on and on to the point that we eventually had a table full of plates with every conceivable curry you can think of. There wasn't even room for our elbows.

When Mr K. (that's the man with the brass) said 'Oh, in that case we'll try all six dishes' her eyes lit up to the point where I thought it was Diwali come early. Then all 6 of us, yes, that's right, us five plus one Gupta, sat and tried to work our way through the (admittedly good) food.

It's no wonder that whenever she sees me, the pound signs start flashing in her eyes and she's there bidding me 'come, you come and eat in my rest'raaant.'

I do wonder if Mr K is still a millionaire - it must have cost him an absolute packet that evening (and yes, the meal was on him).

This was back in 1989.

Butlers Balti every time. Once you have been there, you will compare every other Indian meal you have with Butlers, you just cant help it. There are some decent curries to be had in a few of the restaurants mentioned, but they are on a different scale to Butlers. Everything is freshly prepared, fantastic attention to the perfect ingredients and flavours, fantastic and consistent quality. Been going there for 10 years. I lived abroad for 5 years and would always go there on my visits back to here to see family. If you havent been, GO NOW!

In case your interested, ive had currys from scotland to Birbingham, so far the tastiest was a place in Matlock, cany remember the name of the place.

Normally a vindaloo or madrass is a soupy runny goo with chicken bits in- not in matlock its a thick sauce full of veg bits, tasty and spicy much more hard work and effort gone into the preperation. Try it it changed my perception of a real quality curry.

As a youngster I lived next to an Indian household. The smells that wafted from their house were absolutely lovely and you're right, the food was nothing like what we today would call a 'good curry'.

As brothers we would often watch Illa cooking in the kitchen and I think we'd all agree it's one of those defining moments of our childhood. She'd cook proper popadums and real Indian 'sweets'. So I don't doubt for one minute what you say.

In fact, a Hindi class I used to attend had a night off to engage in the delights of Indian cuisine. It was brilliant.

But as we know, the present market caters for us Brits most of whom are off their trolleys when they pile into a curry house for some much need sustenance!

I second this! Food & staff both good.

I used to think Ranmoor Tandoori was reasonable but went recently and everybodys curry though different all tasted the same, and the mushrooms in my Lamb & Mushroom were definitely TINNED! I wonder if the owner has become greedy and started to cut costs to make even more money- its always busy. If a curry house doesnt even use fresh mushrooms there is some dodgy cooking going on- what else do they skimp on..

Been to Cafe Guru twice. First with the wife (think we spent about £80) and then with the wife and four other friends (we got the bill, it was about £215).

Fantastic both times. Nice staff - esp. the one who looks and sounds like one of the girls out of Baccara (Yes, Sir I Can Boogie) - and a slightly different approach to what you'd call 'a curry'.

I love this place.

Ponds Forge tram stop in town - head towards the market area, and stick to the main road. Gulshan is about 200 yards up on the right hand side of the Wicker. Go through the Wicker Arches and bear left, and you are on Spital Hill.

The area isn't as bad as has been made out, but for an outsider, I would recommend a taxi to the Mangla - for some it can seem a little intimidating.

People of yorkshire i hate to tell you this but having lived in sheffield for the past 6 years i havent come across and Indian resteraunt yet. Imagine a (no discrimination) an indian (which i am) trying to cook a traditional sunday roast.. let me tell that we have our own version full of different flavours and spices..

What you experience in yorkshire is Pakistani, gujrati, versions of traditional indian food. If any of you ever make a visit to leiceser, coventry, birmingham drop me pm as i could guide to a true curry.

I have. And it was very bland indeed! All rice, no sauce! The restaraunts here cater for the traditional english tastes as well. The English have always liked lots of gravy to mop up with their bread, and that is why Indian restaraunts make curries this way. It's a brand new style of cooking that combines Indian with english preferences.

Nice to see someone finally mention the shapla. Best one I've had in sheffield. An what do you mean, it dont look nice, it's really nice inside.

As an experienced curry connoisseur I can confirm that the best curryhouse in Sheffield is undoubtedly the Bhunabeu itself - Seven Spices at West Bar. I know of nowhere else where your onion bahjis are cooked at the table on a sizzling platter.

Found this website on t'internet.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/Uncle_Phal/

Seems a bunch of Sheffield folk were trying to do a Sheffield curry guide similar to one run in Bradford but gave up some years ago.

See the explanation page - seems they got fed up with lack of any decent places apart from mangla & kashmir. All the others they deemed were actually operating like fast food outlets selling premade rubbish.

If the people involved in this are reading SF - is the situation still the same?

Unfortunately, it was only the onions that were being cooked - the bahjis had obviously seen the inside of a microwave first.

The Mangla on Spital Hill- always been superb food and now it's been done up your feet dont stick to the carpet when you walk to your table... Excellent value (3 of us ate there on sat for £23), bring your own wine/booze, no charge for corkage and simply the best garlic and coriander Naan in the world!

Are there some good and not expensive curry houses near the West Street? What are their best meals to order?

I remember one provides buy one get one free on Monday, but it seems not to open on Monday.

I tried that one near the university's roundabout. It is really good but a little expensive for me.

My budget is not over 10 pounds. Please suggest one for my next curry meal.

Thanks a lot!:)

Hello again, i dont have any words of wisdom but knowledge of indian food i do have..

Wrong, its mostly Kashmiri in Yorkshire, not Pakistani per se. One could then argue its a combination of Pakistani / Indian under another name.

Thanks a lot!:)

That would be "Khan's" who give the "one free" deal on Mondays. I have tried it, and it is okay. If you order meat, it tends to be a bit tough.

The one that I really liked was "Saahib" on West Street which is a few yards from Khan's toward City Centre on the opposite side of the road. I am surprised nobody else has mentioned it here. It is a bit expensive though, but I found it worth the price.

Mangla's is cheap and fairly good for the price that they charge.

I have to say we have just been to the new Crookes Tandori (which used to be Marias) and it was very nice. The food was good and they had fish dishes which you don't normally get in a curry house. The bhajis (which is my usual judge) were good and the staff were lovely.

damn, the amount of people that think that they know a good curry.... seriosuly have you ever eaten a traditional curry made by a Indian... You cant even call thE RESTERAUNTS indian as most of the chefs are from pakIstan OR OWNED BY THEM.. Yes the foods quite different.. I am indian and do know a thing or two. the huge amount of oil used to preserve the curries makes them taste awful.

Has anyone here actually had an indian cooked by an indian who doesnt work in a resteraunt...

sorry but this thread is a waste of time, you all should pop down your local asda as ive been told they do a better curry for people that cant cook INDIAN...

Thanks for preaching to us and I know your correct. Could you help us out a little more though by offering us a recipe? It would be very much appreciated

Lol, find this quite funny actually. Firstly if Gujrati food is not Indian the what the hell is??? I seem to recall this Gujrat is a pretty big state in western India....

And as for the Pakistani food, granted it is another country now, based upon a line drawn on the map in North Western India, but not so long ago it was still India, so the heritage of the food is all the same. With such a huge country there is no such thing really as an 'Indian' curry. Its all regional.

And as for the best curries in Sheffield...... the ones I bring back with me after visitng my parents! :hihi:

It's hard to recommend when the quality changes so quickly, when Ali ran the Balti Ghar take away in Totley is was very good, now he's gone it's very poor IMO. The Mohul in Totley is expensive and once again not that good IMO.

My wife went on a girls night out to the Everest and somewhere along the way they ordered one meal too many, she had it bagged up for me and it was great IMO, do they deliver at all? If not is there a good one in Woodseats that delivers as far as Totley?

Sometimes I think I may as well sell the house and move into Mangla or Kashmir, I spend so much time in there. Been going to Kashmir a lot more recently since they brought the thalis back, and especially for the new Desi Khana menu, which is proper homestyle cooking, and it changes every day, it seems.

I'm interested to know, has anyone ever gone into a bog-standard curry house and asked for their meal to be cooked "homestyle". I'm told that Asian people do this, and will get a much better meal as a result.

The place in Woodseats sounds good - haven't had pathia for ages. BUT - anyone know where I can get a dosa? Have resorted to making my own since moving to Sheffield, but it's an arse to make.

I have an ex-Sheff mate back in town this week; we're planning on going for a curry in town tomorrow evening and are meeting just off West Street.
However, it's so long since he's been for a curry in Sheffield that I understand his suggestion - the Himalaya - is no more. As we don't want to stray too far off West Street, is Butlers our best bet?

This thread has brought back some memories, I live in Matlock these days and regularly goto the Momtaz there, I've not tried the one in Sheffield yet.

I always thought the best curry in Sheffield was easily the Bilash Takeaway off Hunters Bar. 7 Spices was always v. good with some good dishes using Trout or Monkfish which you just don't get at your average Curry House.

All of my mates used to love the Kashmir, good traditional Indian food but not the most comfortable of restaurants. It's like a truckers cafe and to be honest I prefer a little more comfort.

And as for the Balti King, like the one in Leeds its usually frequented by students (nothing wrong with that) who have had a skinfull of cheap beer and just want a cheap feed and sometimes a free t-shirt. Nothing to do with quality and everything is far too oily. Mind you if you suffer from constipation the Balti King I'm sure will help you out! :hihi:

I had a really bad takeaway from Butler's tonight. Prices a lot higher than their website, really cold and nasty rice, lukewarm curry, soggy poppadoms (and I live fairly close so it's not like they were travelling miles and miles). The naan was OK.

Not going to bother again.

I'm like that with the Mangla, went again last week and I have never seen Q'ing like I do when I got there, this was on a Thurs as well. The food was awesome and the prices were little as £10 each for mixed kebab (bes tI have ever tasted), main with a carpet naan bread and some rice.

Butlers is very nice also, one the best I have ever tasted as well!

MANGLA FOR EVER, oh and if you are a real Curry man/woman try Gulshans on Wicker, don't be put off by the area it is very nice.

1. Mangla
2. Gulshan
3. Butlers!

BEST by far is the indian restaurant at Flouch, although it is a bit of a drive out way out past stocksbridge. The only other one that comes anywhere close is Zeenat in Attercliffe. These are generally where the indian people eat too. They're clean, welcoming and always busy too which is a good sign. Been to loads to try them out and would highly recommend these 2. Even all my mates have been converted to these.

+1 for Bangla Cottage, Excellent service, polite, informed and helpful staff. Amazing food, a lot of curry houses seem to think that curry=hot whereas bangla's have real depth of flavour to them with just the right amount of heat and in the pickle tray they do this red chilli dip stuff which looks like it's going to blow your head off but is infact really tangy and spicy without the burn (does anyone know what it is, i think it'd go great in a chicken sandwich)

and now they do delivery i won't be eating curries from anywhere else

Safron club on west Street is by far the best curry EVER! The staff are really nice too. Amazing! As for Balti King it's THE WORST place ever. Scoresonthedoors.co.uk they got really bad hygiene score and it shows in the quality of their food. Stay well clear.

Been there 3 times now and it is very good, the last time I went it was better than normal

Depends what your looking for really.

Shads in crookes does a very nice, and very cheap, takeaway.
Indian Chef in Crookes does excellent food, and is a very informal bring your own drink type place.
Mohul in Totley is really nice too, but the currys are extremely mild. Even the Vindaloo at Mohul is nowhere near as spicy as a standard Jalfrezi or Madras elsewhere.
Bilash on Sharrowvale road does a nice takeaway, but all the currys taste very similar no matter what you order.
Akbars near Meadowhall is slightly more up-market, and the food is top-notch.

The overall best I've been to in Sheffield? Pound-for-pound it's got to be Indian Chef in Crookes.

The Rajput on Commonside is the best takeaway in Sheffield. Been living in Oughtibridge for 6 years now, but still go back there for our takeaways (they don't deliver). The restaurant next door is also excellent.

Butlers is fantastic for both food & service. Particularly good with small kids.

Also, can't fault The Mangla on Spital Hill.

Zara's Restaurant recently opened in Crookes (216a Crookes, S10 1TH).

We designed it so hopefully you like the interior (photo on our homepage) :hihi:

We ate there just after opening night and thought the food was fantastic (have been back a few times since).
It would be great to hear what all our fellow Sheffield curry fans think of both the restaurant and the food! :)

I will totally agree with this! Been several times now, never disappointed and tried many things from the menu... Let's start from the top shall we...

Poppadoms - always fresh and warm. An awesome choice of 8 pickles with them, too! 4 of the usual ones and 4 different ones.
Starters - great. Can't fault the ones I've tried so far. Everything you could expect from anywhere else and others to try, too.
Mains - The hot and spicy section is good, with a variety of more unusual dishes to try. Vegetarian dishes - those I've tried have been good. Can be served as a side instead. Others - there are then a load of specials, things a bit different which you wouldn't find everywhere, and of course all the ones you would expect too.
Breads/Rice - All that I've tried have been great, again! The chilli and onion naan is good and hot! Naans aren't rediculously oversized either - and always cut in two for easy sharing.
Drinks - no beers on draught but many would argue this is a good thing - guarenteed freshness. Small or large bottles of Cobra. Soft drinks, wines, etc all available too.
Desserts - fairly standard ice cream menu for curry houses all over.

Have also requested things which are not on the menu - all have been made without a problem and to a high standard.

The decor in the restaurant is such a change from when it was previously opened as 'Crookes Tandoori' a couple of years ago - so warm and welcoming nowadays. See pics on their website. Very comfortable and relaxing surroundings.

The service is great too - don't go if you are in a hurry though! It's quite a relaxed approach, and will usually be asked if you want a break between courses (10 mins or so) or if you want the food sooner. Seems to somehow make room for more, lol!

Price - it's not cheap but certainly not expensive either, considering the standard of the decor, atmosphere and service.

Overall, it's pretty awesome really!

Well done guys and see you soon :)

I went there last week with some family and friends, as I don't live in the area any more, and was pleasantly surprised.

I had Kakra Chop for starters, which was Minced Crab meat with onions and spices, served inside a light dome made of a light crisp pastry. It looked like something from outer space. Delicious.

Main was Zara's House Special Chicken, which was hot for me, but very tasty. The Pershwari Naan bread was to die for, it melted in the mouth.

The pickle tray that came with the popadums was also fantastic. As well as the usual 4 pickles you get in any indian, mango chutney, lime pickle, etc, they do their own 4 pickles using a selction of spices, all served in contemporary pots on a long thin plate.

The interior and decor is comfy and welcoming and the staff attentive and knowledgable.

It aint the cheapest Indian in Sheffield - but as with most thing in life you get what you pay for, would def recommend. 9/10
