Has anyone here heard of the brand denon? I've only recently heard of it and it seems pretty expensive but I've seen a denon hi fi that I may purchase... Just need to know more about the quality of the brand. Is it in the same league as Sony?
Cheers you all!!

You'll not be disappointed with a Denon!
Sony is considered rubbish these days. I can't vouch for hi-fi gear but Sony stopped making CD equipment (for PCs) a couple of years ago, and they use cheap brand manufacturers like Opteron for their equipment.
Sony regularly get slated for their fancy looks but poor build quality. People have been ripped off buying expensive Sony DVD writers when they are just cheap £50 Opteron models with a Sony badge on the front!
Is Sony really considered rubbish?? Wow!! I thought they were like number 1 worldwide!!

We use Sony digital video cameras, or rather we did. We have noticed a distinct drop in reliability over the past couple of years.

I have a denon hi-fi and it's brilliant. Couldn't recommend it more. Had it for about five years.
Buy one and enjoy.

Denon, very good, good quality, build quality.
I have a Technics (Panasonic's sister company), very good, good, solid build. You won't go wrong with: Pionner-excellent, Technics-very very good, Yamaha make very good audio equipment, Kenwood I have heard make very good audio equipment, Mission, KEF, B&W speakers - you won't go wrong with any of those. For slightly cheaper stuff - JVC, Panasonic - won't go wrong with those very good for the price. Sony, were good, but the previous two makes are better. I had a JVC that was my Aunts for a few years - very good, it got humped around rooms too still worked - good and solid - meanwhile after 3 house moves my other Aunts - the one that lived up (t)here the speaker connections have gone and have needed to be sorted. However, I am next in the running for her Sony, I might hook it up to some Mission speakers and I am on a winner, and keep her amp/tape decks and put a new CD player in - it doesen't like my CDRs so I would have to get a new CD player seperate. And sell the Technics on. The JVC had better quality components in it, but duff, dreadful speakers on it (which are next to me here), on the other hand the Sony has poorer quality components, the buttons are getting a bit loose, but damn site better speakers than the JVC.

Denon is a very good make but ther are other options out ther try Harman-Kardon who are big in cars, fitted in mercs and BMW
but also do a fantastic home hi-fi and home cinema systems, and sonically beat Denon hands down, but it is all personal prefrences, sony are not the best in hi-fi but serve a purpose at a price point.
Kind Regards Scotdoggie.
I wanted a DENON but they were too pricey when i bought mine so i ended up with a Technics system.
The DENON's are better quality though!

Sales volume is no guarantee of quality. Sony built their name on innovation, not quality. It's the Japanese 'fit for purpose' ethic.
They want their products binned in 2-5 years, so they can sell you the latest gizmo :D Did anybody else notice they keep inventing new formats too (just to make sure you have to replace your entire collection of media each time) :suspect:

Most f the Sony stuff I have bought has been first rate.
Whats the H fi is it a mini system like the DM 31 or are we talking seperates?
denon lead the way in some areas of home cinema. there flagship amps are amazing and for years i lusted after there top model but had to opt for something a bit lower down the price range...ohhh and its a sony...
sony are the most reliable brand ive ever known...my rule is...if you want to buy something electrical and you cant decide what brand...go with sony. And ive never had anything by them breakdown.
if your wanting a hi-fi and are spending a few hundred then get to moorgate acoustics and look around...you may find yourself upping the amount you want to pay when you have a demo of some of their stuff. seperates all the way!!
Denon have been around many years and were always associated with good quality gear. I can't vouch for them in this day and age compared to others though.

I've had a DENON system before, I would say they are medium in quality. Buy a copy of What Hi-Fi and see what they say as most their reviews are very good. Buying new audio systems isn't always the best option as quite often companies just re-case their products. I'm using a NAD AMP with my PC at the moment which is over 10 years old and it beats anything else I've used with it. Second hand is always cheaper and buying second hand means you can go for a much higher level of quality compared to buying brand new where you'd have to pay through the roof.
