Is there a more well used park in sheff? It does strike me though that apart from the new swings the play equipment is old and crappy as well as congested. For such a well used park in an area where council tax bills are particularly high dont you think the council should invest in new equipment? I dont think the answer is to let some chav run a rip off mini fair for the summer. (I think the cafe is brilliant)

The council spending money on a park that isn't in a Labour voting ward and is based in the South West of the city? There's more chance of seeing pigs fly.

Endcliffe Park is one of my favourite parks. In the last few years, the playground seems to have had quite a few more things added to it so obviously the council do still take an interest in it. Has anybody else noticed that you never see a roundabout in a playground anymore? Is it because children shouldn't be subjected to such natural things as grazed knees anymore or is there some other reason for the roundabout's extinction?

It was so nice at peace in the park when that little clearing had loads of really nice tents showing films and the tree's were decorated. It's a shame it didn't all stay. But isn't that whole area going to be turned into students flats now?

You can't turn a park into student flats. Investors might buy the large houses on Rustlings Road to let to students though, but they can only buy them once they come up for sale, not just suddenly click their fingers and magic the whole area into student flats.

I was a kid at Nether Edge Grammar in 1943 when a USAAF Flying Fortress crashed in Endcliffe Park killing all 10 men on board. It was clearly in trouble coming back from a bombing mission when it attempted a wheels up forced landing. Seeing a bunch of kids playing football ahead of them, the pilot banked away to avoid them, perhaps to try another pass but struck the trees and exploded in flames. It took a brave act to forfeit their lives to save those chilldren, and I believe there is a small monument to the crew looked after by the Royal Airforce Association.

Yep, Gentlemen only though. The site of 3 large Almond/Cherry trees on a level raised area marks the spot.
It's a popular park as evidenced by all the rubbish scattered all over it!

Encliffe Park is a fine park. I lived on Rustlings Road for three years and spent many a happy hour in that park.

The reason it and the surrounding area doesn't get the investment that it should get is that the Labour council targets tax payers money at the 'right areas', the right areas being Labour voting areas. Hallamshire according to The New Labour Council is clearly a wrong area.

You should read the Cabinet Report 'Closing the Gap'. This document sets out why tax payers money should not be spent evenly across the city or even distributed to the areas the money was collected from but spent in areas where people vote Labour.

If you want to see the council tax money that you sweat all year earning you have to put you big tick next to the Labout Councillors name.

the irony of a party that claimed that Thatcher was unfair.

You dont have to vote Labour to get money in your area.

Not all Labour areas recieve funding under "closing the gap" its just seven. i.e. manor/castle, darnall, southey, firth park, burngreave, shiregreen and woodhouse.

So if you want a fair distribution of investment vote to kick them out!

Unfortunetly people didnt grasp this in the local elections otherwise we would have a new Council (although it was close).

Endcliffe park is a quality park, mainly because the of the people who use it. Students and locals both respect the park (mostly).

I think I remember fund raising events for the aforementioned swings/play equipment years ago. I'm almost certain.
Which means of course that the existing stuff was privately bought and NOT paid for out of council tax in the first place! As was (I think) the play equipment at Forge Dam. Shocking, really.
Can any one back me up on this?

That's right. the playground equipment was paid for by local parents fundraising. The whole of the Porter Valley needs money investing, some of the dams are in danger of collapse, and yet represent an important part of the history of Sheffield, but the council don't seem to care, as there aren't enough votes in it, but it belongs to the whole city, not just the local area.
