thank you so much for this info.

I mean it - I'm not an avid TV watcher, in fact I haven't touched the TV set in over a week. So I wouldn't have known about this.

/me goes to wipe the dust off the TV screen

Sorry but I thought that it was dire. I like PK but was completely unmoved and only watched til 11 though my hubby watched it to the end but it didn't apparently get an better.

You have no sense of humour woman, "watch me trigger finger", "I dont care whos it is or what it is its floating" "pitty there were not that bolshy in 1939" "give em an inch"

CLASSIC LINES

Got to agree with Mo for once! I too thought it was probably the unfunniest thing Peter Kay has done to date. I only carried on watching in the hope it may get funny but to no avail.:(
abit pants if you ask me.

I think The Services is great, one of the funniest thing's he's done, but it has to be watched in context. C4 neglected to mention that it was 7 years old, written and performed when the lad was about 23, and the first thing he'd done on telly. It was made as part of the Comedy Lab series, with a budget of just under sod all.

People watching the services now would just judge it against Phoenix Nights but the 2 are totally different in format and humour. Like Toby says you have to watch it in the right context.
Funniest thing for me was Patrick Mcguiness' hair...what was going on???
I remember watching The Services when it came out and wetting myself laughing because at the time it was fresh and different. That style has been copied several times over now and would seem a bit dated.

Does anyone know what happened to The Services? It was advertised as a pilot and I assume it never got made/dropped?
It was alright, PK was young and I can see that it seems dated now. It was probably a fresh idea at the time. I noticed a couple of jokes in it which he's since used e.g. the rain comment. The bit at the end showing the next show looked funny, but I don't know if it was ever made?

As for last nights live show, having got the DVD from that tour, last night was funny, but it was cut badly, so people who've never seen his live stand up wouldn't have got the right impression. You need to see the whole show to get some of the subtle things he puts in the wedding sketch which he's mentioned earlier in the show and they'd cut it out!

It was never a pilot, it was part of Comedy Lab, C4's way of getting new talent on screen. They get six people to make half an hour each, with a budget of something daft like 25K. The Services was part of that, and following it's success C4 made That Peter Kay Thing, which was a series of 6 "mockumentaries". The first one was called "In The Club", which became Phoenix Nights.

The live show that was on the other night was the end of his "Mum Wants A Bungalow" tour, so it should be no surprise that some of the material was the same as has appeared on the DVD, and I would have thought that any editing probs would have been trying to mix it up a bit.

7 million people watched it. That is amazing.

What were the other ' That Peter Kay Thing' programmes. I seem to recall one about Park Avenue and that's all I can remember.

Cant remember the exact titles but i will give u a description of the six:

The Club - already mentioned

light entertainment industry - About being a steward at the Manchester evening arena - how topical!

Ice Cream men cometh - About local ice cream man vs Senior whippy (local ice cream man rival) - best of the six in my opinion.

Marc Parc - Singer and one half of parc avenue with Cheryl avenue. about the ups and downs of marc parc in the record industry

Leonard De Tomkinson - Worlds oldest paper boy - 2nd favourite

Cant think of the sixth just yet, i will be back later after i have remembered!

Did you know that "softy's hard stuff" is an actual sex shop in Bolton, same name and everything!

Edit, added:

"That Peter Kay Thing" is coming out on DVD in October.

Re the bingo hall, didn't a real life fire officer called keith lard sue channel four, seem to remember an apology being broadcast,
or was that just part of the show?

uncleheed

There was an apology at the end of the phoenix nights episode when keith lard appeared in that. There is a fire officer with the same name who i think took exeption to a character having his name and shagging dogs.
The producers made a donation to some charity or another.
